  • The music in this game always reminds me of the music in the movie 5th Element which was a great movie by the way.

  • You can also find this game on Taito Legends 2 for PC XBOX and PS2.

  • I still find Super Nova to be my favorite in the series. Really cool soundtrack, much more different ships, cooler looking bosses, and some awkward stage layouts.

  • 5:23

xD "Oh shit well F that I'm not dodging that rain!"

  • I guess the prices for some Saturn games have gone up a lot in the past 3 years.. The cheapest one right now on ebay is $30 shipped. I got my copy for $23 shipped.

  • man i love playin this game but i need help gettin a key so i can play imports :(

  • @GARYIZRAW just buy the Action replay Plus 4M Auto, that is all you will need , it will play not only imports but also play imports that need the 1 or 4M Ram carts, there is a review of it on Classic Game room !

  • @paulspydar LOL yeah dude actually i got one coming in the mail today

  • Japanese disco a go go gajoob! XD

  • OMG I LOVE THIS GAME!!!! Played it when the sega saturn was the coolest system around

this and croc lol were the best

  • I just bought a Sega Saturn and the only game I got is this one.

  • So, rather then being peacefully eaten by humans, fish take to being pounded into nonexistence by a spaceship. While I find that a bit disparaging (what does that say about humans?), I can understand that. Anyway, this game looks awesome! The Darius game on the SNES didn't even come close to this! The game was ok, but the screen scrolled along at a snail's pace. Man, I wish this was on the SNES, and I'll never look at whiting fish sandwiches the same way again (but will still eat them).

  • Take that, you stupid shrimp!!!

  • This Guy Could Make Shit Look Good

  • love this game because, the sound is so awesome and memorable and so is the music

and I hate fish, blowing them up is fun :D

  • i got darius twin ^^ but its for nintendo :S

  • You can also buy Taito Legends 2 for ps2 it have this game and some other shmups, and alot of good arcade games.

  • a buck or 2? lucky! I can't find it for under $15.

  • The boss warning siren sounds like that one Shakira song.

  • Star Fox 64 got a lot of things from this game

  • I have this on Saturn.Top notch shooting action, but the music really crank me up!This game had one of the most atmospheric soundtracks ever heard in a shooter.Worthy for the music alone.

  • Have only played on MAME but about to fire up on my JAP Saturn! Can't wait because the slowdown on MAME was overly astounding! I always loved the soundtrack too!

  • Electric Fan is just WIN.

  • This game is so awesome that I bought a Sega Saturn just for this game hell yeah!

  • Just bought a saturn, picked up darius gaiden and galactic attack thanks to yalls vids. I got galactic attack a few days ago and this came in today. To me this game is hard as nails compared to galactic attack... But am looking forward to put many hours into DG!!

  • Love this game, but, hahahahaha....8:35: "Disco Fan".. Nice!! lol :)

  • Since the first Taito Legends sucked, Taito Legends 2 for the Xbox and PS2 slipped in under the radar and contains the arcade version of Darius Gaiden. The PS2 version exclusively also has the arcade versions of both G-Darius and Raystorm.

The Xbox and PC versions exclusively contain Rayforce which is also known as Galactic Attack on the Saturn. Just thought some people might want to know that. As soon as I found out I hunted Taito Legends 2 down!

  • Damn this game looks a lot better than "G Darius" that was on PS1.

  • Gotta love Electric Fan, and more his theme ''FAKE''

this game is so awesome, i just play it on the arcades, the extra version, but I love it anyways

  • Fucking Classic Game Room, always making me want to flick over to ebay and spend my cash...

  • I KNOW RIGHT?! It's worth it tho, and if you go to their web page they have a "search for this game on ebay" button on every game page.

  • @RHYSsoul

    No doubt.

  • @RHYSsoul get an emulator

  • Electric fan aka:(DISCO FAN)LOL...

  • Dude, 6:44 to 7:15 was strong. Nice play.

  • whats the level thin whts up wid dat

  • god your good at this game

  • I want an Electric Fan T shirt.

    (on the back: )

    WARNING

    A Huge Battleship

    ELECTRIC FAN

    Is Approaching Fast

  • 4:52

  • electric fan the disco boogaloo! lolz

  • I WANT DAVE!!!!

  • I hate the parts where you stop talking

  • Sega saturne outdid playstation 1 in "every" 2d arcade translation or 3d game period! At the time back in the day saturne demolished the competion in 2d and held its on in 3d.

  • This is one of my favorite shooters ever! I absolutely love the soundtrack.

  • there is its called xbox live arcade daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :)

  • Is it illegal for their to be a classic 2D horizontal shooter after the 16 bit era?

Why isn't their variety like this in games today?

  • Nope there are alot of them on XBLA some of them are free. I'm not sure about PSN though. This is one of the best looking 2D shooters evermade.

  • wicked music

  • For those of you interested in playing this game, but don't have a Saturn, the arcade version is on Taito Legends 2 on the Xbox, PS2, and PC. I'm not sure what differences there may be between the arcade, and Saturn versions if any.

  • I love this game! The music kicks ass! And the bosses are huge and so animated!

  • Electric fan , Electric Boogaloo ...LMFAO

  • This game works perfectly on MAME, and is in my opinion one of the very best of the Darius series, which is in itself the best shooter series.

  • Is this the prequel to G-Darius?

  • It was released a few years before G-Darius, but chronolically-speaking, I don't know if it's a prequel.

  • about what i know in the Darius saga

G-Darius is the first in the story, but this game was made years before G Darius

  • Does this game really live up to the claim that it's just as good as Einhander?

  • The music for this game is amazing, sans the opera singing not too sure about that lol.

  • Does this work well on mame? I know G-darius Has sound issues but looks great.

  • So Mark, are you a fan of Zuntata in general?

  • The effect when a boss blows up is nothing short of psychedelic ^_^

  • I think Mark's right: Darius Gaiden is basically how Star Trek IV should have been. By that I mean a vicious fish vs. man deathmatch spanning a thousand cosmoses. I'd watch *that* ^_^

  • I once beat this game to the last level, and the final boss was a giant crab. Also this game has a PC port.

  • 4:50

    Electric Fan the Disco Boogaloo!

Absolutely the most brilliant thing I've seen in a long time. I could never play this game because I suck at schmups, but I want to see that guy for myself.

  • They should have called this game "Fish Fighter". That'd be sweet.

  • check out Gradius V for ps2

  • Oh I need that song I could so put that in my poppin routine.

  • Darius Gaiden's crazy pop japanese space opera soundtrack was awesome but I never liked this game as much since it didn't always want a thing called tuna sashimi

  • then again, crossssss your eyeeeeeeeees is pretty awesome too

  • While the Saturn could do 3D pretty well it couldn't do 3D as well as PSX but the Saturn was better at Producing 2D graphics then the PSX and was made for games like Street fighter zero.

  • ssssssssssssssssssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeegggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • I don't really like 'fish based' shooters.. Give me aliens and F16's any day.

  • I just played this as I noticed it was on a Namco collection I bought for the PS2 - its actually an ok little shooter if odd.. The aquatic theme is a little strange but I like the drop ship that speeds past giving you much needed power ups, the sing-song 'boss alarm' is good as well.. It sort of has cheesy 'mermaid' rave music - I couldnt help but be a little disturbed by it all.

  • This was published by Taito ftr. Namco had nothing to do with it.

  • there is a Taito collection for Ps2, I think that's what he meant, I have it myself it's called Taito Legends 2, I paid like 9,99 at walmart it has not only darius gaiden but also G-darius

  • I HATE fish!! I'm more of a meat and potatoes kind of guy.

This game gives me all the more reason to blow 'em up!!

    Another winner CGRHD.

  • Agreed. Steak and potatoes rock! I could go for some pork chops and applesauce right now

  • i still have this game...memories...they just dont make games of this quality anymore

  • ROFL the premise of this game is so lame but funny...

  • Any one can tell me how or were can i get this games for pc!!

  • PC OWNS U ALL

  • Hardcorers play sega.

  • One of the best shooters.

  • This game is also on Taito Legends 2 for the PS2.

  • this game looks awesome im gonna have to get it

  • On the topic of shooters, how do you like Iridion II (GBA) and the Nanostray line of games (NDS)?

  • Obviously, the question is directed at the producer of Classic Gaame Room (great show, keep it up... can you review Secret Of Mana?), but I just thought I'd give my THREE CENTS on teh matter. I've only played Nanostray 2, and it's a solid shooter, but if you want to play a really good handheld shooter, then well... er... R-Type Deluxe for the GB, or Gradius Advence for the... GBA.

  • Well you talk about super badass shooters. My favorite is super R-type for SNES. And I don't even like shooters like this but that one was insane.

  • Must find this game for my Saturn...

  • Fantastic!

  • "Electric Fan the disco boogaloo"

  • The japanese woman singing really complements this game, it just goes with the bizzaro space fish theme really well. I wonder... will wind squid make a cameo in the next Darius game?

  • game looks like a suped up verson of super nova for the snes

  • Your reviews are extrodinary. Great stuff!

  • this is the best video game reviewer OF ALL TIME!

  • This game here is proof 2D sprites is in some ways better than 3D polygons.

  • Except the game uses polygons for backgrounds, bosses, and other scaling environments.

If anything, the game is proof that combining sprites and polygons works well.

  • what a psychedelic game... when do we get to see the "Mark Plays Shooters On Drugs"-series?

  • Makes me wish I still had a working Saturn. =(

  • WHAT ARE THOOSE VORTEX THINGY???

  • This game looks amazing.

  • Ive beat this game multible times. There is multible endings. Some are boring, some make you fell like you acomplised something(blowing up shit)

  • My route when finishing the game was A,B,D (it's safer to fight the boss than in E), H, L, Q (1up!), V. If you get red beam without options or anything DO NOT power-up, i say DO NOT power-up your shot because it will make game set it's difficulty to highest possible one and your run will be screwed, no jokes (I 1cc'd the game myself so i know that)

  • Feels so ironic. I went to my brother today and tried the Taito Legends 2 which I gave him some time ago. I briefly remembered seeing the name Darius Gaiden somewhere and played it. When I went home I saw where it came from - here. :)

  • Darius gaiden is Also available on "taito legends 2" (ps2) for those lacking a saturn but want to play.

The collection is pretty shooter intensive. Great budget game.

  • Great review, looks like an awesome game.

  • Very similar to Disco Fan in Wind Squid. srry

  • You should make a character very similar in wind squid! That would be cool. And since it would be your version of Disco Fan you could decide if you wanted him to be a good guy or a bad guy. And if you do decide to do something like you can say that it was all your idea just to sound cool. lol

  • Very cool! I like the selectable path you have to go through the game. Reminds me of Out Run from way back in the day, you could choose your path to the end just like in this game :)

  • Darius Gaiden sounds like Ninja Gaiden, but with a dude named Darius. He probably wears a black trench coat and listens to Truxton.

  • Looks like a game that Windsquid would fit into

  • Cool video once again, have you played darius twin on the SNES ? Fish are a good enemy so many ways to kill them, you could use lasers, you could use bullets, you could use nets, you could even eat them !

  • Awsome game!

  • This was one of the few Japanese games that Acc-lame localize in recent years that was actually pretty good. One thing that I really hated about this game, however, was the extreme repetativeness of the music. Throughout the tracks, the female vocalist keeps saying "Close your eyes, close your head". It's insanity.

Now, I normally love Zuntata's (Taito's sound team) music, but Darius Gaiden was not one of their best.

  • If you like this, you absolutely MUST play G-Darius for the PSX. It's the best in the series and is also one of the best SHMUPS of the 32-bit era. Gameplay is much improved, graphics are better (though Gaiden has a lot more quality 2D graphics) and the music is awesome.

  • COOL

  • Wind Squid

    season 2

Wind Squid vs the break danceing eletric fan

great video cant wait far part 2

  • This was a sick game when I got it! Excellent! It has been released on the PS2 in the second Taito compilation.

  • You know, Ive always wondered this: where is the main theme song for Classic Game Room from? the one that plays for every show..

  • this game is like a bad acid trip o.O

  • Right on man I look forward to part 2. As you know I have beat this game so it is awesome seeing you play it. You weren't too far from beating the stage M boss. I would say you were like about %45 or so.

  • did you kill wind squid.

    great vid

  • looks liek a fun shmup, but don't have a saturn anymore. Been enjoying Sega CD lately though, your review of Silpheed had me intrigued and so I got a rare Genesis/Sega CD combo called the JVC X'eye, its great. I bought another SHMUP called Soulstar too, I prefer it to Silpheed, but Silpheed is still really good. You should pick up Soulstar and review it, its pretty good, the soundtrack is GREAT for it.

  • MORE REVIEWS!!!! Keep em coming, I love these!!

  • Yeah, I burned the game(naughty naughty) and I have just composite cables right now, I've heard S-video has a nice improvement, hopefully as large as the Dreamcast's. The composite do look nice, but I have seen some color scrolling/bleeding, and text can be sort of blurry.

  • What is the music in the intro???

  • I think Mark just lies about all of his prices, and fakes his price stickers, he's really a multimillionaire =P

  • Darius Gaiden is a pretty fun game, and I'm not very hot at shooting games, but just like Mars Matrix, I find this game oddly rewarding whenever I die. Question for you Mark, did you purchase S-video cables for your Saturn already?

Excellent review, waiting for part 2.

  • I don't have s-video yet, actually it looks great on composite which is surprising. And I did pay about a buck! With $7 shipping, that's the part I left out. Check ebay. :) -CGRHD

  • over in the UK SCART RGB is the best lead to use for the saturn.. I never understood why s-video was the standard for america - maybe you can do a video covering the differences between all types of leads for these systems?

  • nice

  • "Take that, you stupid shrimp!"

  • sweet. i love this game
