For this kind of work, there is a much easier solution, in Maya create a new poly plane with the same dimensions and set the resolution of the poly plane according to your needs. Now select the reference mesh and then the new poly plane go to Mesh - Transfer attributes. Check Vertex Position and you can leave the rest to off. Hit transfer and your done. 3ds Max should have a similar solution.
Very cool, and very helpful. Thank you. But couldn't you do this in Maya by making the original mess Go Live and then building polygons on top of that to retopologize it?
When I draw with the topology thing, no lines appear.
I realise I'm being rather vague, but I can't think what I've done differently. Any help would be MUCH appreciated, even if it's just rough ideas of the kinds of things I might have missed.
Turns out the object LOOKED like it had been picked, displaying the right name in the graphite tools section, however it just needed me to manually re-pick it as it were.
This tool looks fantastic, hopefully it'll solve a little problem I'm working on at the moment!
I use to make a plane convert into mesh object and the conform space warp it almost work by itself and pretty fine but anyway you can refine the mesh with Graphite
Hahah at 2:12 i almost thought you'd say "So we got this piece of jjjjjunk."
The graphite modelling tools (also popularely known as the polyboost plugin from earlier 3ds max versions) is the best edition to 3ds max EVER as far as modelling go. I'm gonna make a tutorial on how to use this method in to create organic figures very intuitively, very close to zbrush, or fantastic for a basemesh.

that's weird he can preview the topology line he drew, but when I use polyboost... it doesn't show to me until I right-click..
