I play this on the piano all the time in New Orleans. Come to Tommy's Wine Bar at 752 Tchoupitoulas !!! I also play it in 22 Nursing Homes. Nice nostalgic tune and wonderful words. !!!
You ladies are downright amazing! The absence of the "big band" highlights your vocals! For example, when a rock band has to step down out of the studio's overdubbing, auto tuning and pitch variations-and play "raw", they often come up short. Your piano on the other hand, acts as both the foundation, and the structure. You are truly talented. Thanks for a great performance.
Just to bring up more confusion ....the pronunciation is also spot on for Viennese description off beautiful /dashing ;-) so there; many languages one messages. Peace and good vibes and beauty everywhere ;-)
No, it doesn't really rhyme at all - your Yiddish is not different than the German. Let's just say it's... and accepted artistic license, for the sake of singing the song in English. :-)
Terry5135, as a teacher of Yiddish for many years...trust me...it rhymes...depending on the dialect of Yiddish spoken it could be sheyn, like explain, or shayn, like shine, or shoen...like shone...or....etc.... Sheyn, like explain is very standard and common
Ok, fair enough. I do trust you and I stand corrected. But this doesn't really answer Bluehawk's second question. My answer would be 'no', but I'll defer to your knowledge on the question if I'm mistaken.
@Bluehawk2008 In many German dialects "schön" is pronounced as "scheen". Like in these dialects, the Yiddish (which is based on middle and upper German dialects) word for "schön" is "scheen" or "schejn", and therefore it rhymes with "explain". In Standard German, "schön" is pronounced with an sound that I cannot explain... but this sound exists in many tongues, like many other Germanic languages, French, Hungarian, Turkish and so on.
I live in Germany - and there are areas where it is pronounced 'shane'. And as YossiUK points out, this is also the Yiddish pronunciation. But I agree that it is indeed 'simply gorgeous' :)

I love how the piano ads a somber and melancholy feel to the song. The black dresses make it even more of an enigma. LOVE IT!

Should "schön" really rhyme with "explain"? Is the Yiddish phonetics different from the German?

The german word "schön" doesn't fit, but the yiddish one does :)
MsMagicCarpet 1 year ago
Well actually it does not in High German. It does in Yiddish, but the vowel in "schön" rather should sound like in french "jeune".

Simply gorgeous!! However they should concentrate on the pronunciaiton... it is "Schoen", no "shain"..
kurutze 4 years ago
In actual fact, it is pronounced "shain" as the actual lyrics are in Yiddish and not German.
