One of my favorite Italian tenors! He had a even voice all the way and at times sounded somewhat like Di Stefano but not as open luckily for him. I never heard him in house sadly. RIP
He is very very good, indeed. Better than any other Tenor today. But why hasn't he been as famous as the others (Pavarotti, del Monaco, Bergonzi, Corelli...)? In my opinion, his voice isn't so special and he doesn't reperesent a specific "type" of singer.
Puccini successfully stops time with the beginning of this aria. It clearly demonstrates his awesome genius. As for this particular spectacle, it must be the best La Boheme I can imagine. Absolutely fantastic with Freni, Raimondi and Karajan.
I think it is stupid to compare one singers version of a song with others. Either you like one better or you don't, don't listen to the one you don't like. Most of us out there are not opera snobs who listen for mistakes and the notes rather we enjoy the music. When I want to hear a certain aria I line up maybe ten to twenty by the same and different artists and just sit back and enjoy and not ruin it for the next person.
RIP, maestro Gianni. You've always been my favorite lyric tenor along with your compatriot Ferruccio Tagliavini. You remain an absolute example to follow for the flawed and way less gifted current generation of tenors. Your art is immortal. Thank you for all this priceless testimony you left to us.
Non molto conosciuto da noi (Stati Uniti), but a very fine tenor indeed and of course Mirella Freni very right vocally and touching in this part. The final scene is also beautifully played. Grazie mille, Gruppo.
Bravo

Have compared Pavarotti, Domingo and Raimondi singing this aria.
Raimondi, in my opinion, outdoes the other two by far.
Lyrical, passionate and very moving

@gladbill001 almost any good tenor of the past can beat Domingo or Pavarotti, hehehe.

Tuo Giovi
