  • so sad

  • folks back then moved alot faster and seemed to be uglier

  • thanks for uploading. im doing a presentation about this earthquake and it really helps to see wht happened rather than just reading about it

  • damn 1906 and ther non knowledge of HD :P

  • wow.. kool movie.. i bet all the ppl in the film are dead already... survived the earthquake but couldn't survive time.

  • another reminder folks to get prepared for the next BIG ONE. According to the USGS, there is a 94% chance of a 6.7 or greater magnitude quake hitting Northern California over the next 30 years. Hopefully, we'll be relocating out of the Bay Area before this cataclysmic event ever takes place. Thanks, but no thanks!!

  • Thank you so much! I'm currently writing a story and this is absolutely invaluable.

  • we shud ol be thnkful dt we no longer live in dt kind of generations. their generations r far more Worse than wat we live hre right now. lyf in this kind of generation are sickening. war..poverty.. etc.

  • i wouldn´t like living in 1905. no candy bars. no dr pepper. no ice cream. no internet. no good and competent but a ton of smelly people all over the city. i bet that the smell from sweat was all over the place.

  • @Nudelsalatbomber i agree with u.

  • @Nudelsalatbomber Not true. The kids actually did have candy back then. They had rock candy, chocolate, various sodas, ice cream etc; etc; As to the smells? Ya your probably right on that. The water lines were destroyed by the quake and the bathing facilities that were available (buckets of water) were not exactly high end. But I honestly don't think my great- grand parents worried too much about how they smelled, when they had just survived one of the greatest tragedies of the 20th Century.

  • @Nudelsalatbomber If you think the 20th century was a stinky time? I heard the middle ages REALLY SMELLED. can you imagine being a hooker during the civil war? peeeeeeeuuuuuuuuu

  • I love Earthquakes. I hope we get hit with on soon, so the demons can runaway. Thanks you mother nature. These rascals abuse you and think they will not be punished. I hope you show them no mercy. Hope they visit my channel and find out the solution. Jaya!

  • when was the last huge quake that hit san francisco?

  • @callofpaul October 17,1989. Bay Bridge that takes you to Oakland collapsed and 100 people were killed. It was redone on Labor Day weekend.

  • @mermaidamp so its been over 20years since a big one? wow sucks to be in san francisco then.

  • If you live near the bay, go check out the SF Earthquake anniversary celebration near Lotta's Fountain.

  • If you live near the bay, go check out the Earthquake anniversary celebration near Lotta's Fountain.

  • que casualidad que los terremotos que detruyeron ciudades Californioanas ocurrieron poco despues del fin de la guerra Mexicano-Americana y de la enexacion de ciudades y territorios mexicanos a los ee.uu!

  • wow lol ahahahah lol haaa lol hahaha lol foo like naaaaaa lol hahahhaa funnyy shit daw

  • How incredible that this footage survived for so long. We are looking at something that happened over 100 years ago!

  • yea and were just looking at dead people now

  • It's Bush's fault!

  • @rkoliver1 No his great grand dad,,,,they all are bastards

  • Damn dis video of the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake is creepy looking it has no sound it's a silent video.

R.I.P. to those people that have died of this horrible earthquake in 1906

  • I need to be prepared for the next big quake like the one in 1906 ,1989,1994 i heard that 30yrs from now the earthquake is going to be bigger then the 1906 quake

  • where the hell did you hear such ignorant shit? an earthquake of any high magnitude can hit at anytime, not in 30 years

  • @jan8919 earthquakes are still unpredictable..at least the epicenter and magnitude.

  • @jan8919 dude earthquakes cant be predicted lol they just happen any time anywhere ,how old are you 5?

  • @bbtoosangre Actually you are quite wrong here. There are changes that take place prior to major earthquakes, and the experts know and also have equipment that people like Us to do not have access to. Does this mean that one will happen within days? No, but it does show the changes occurring. Many predicted the quake in Japan, but did not think it would be a 9.0. Many thought the 7.2 prior to that was the "big" one.

  • what magnitde was this

  • Acually the magnitude from the 1906 sf earthquake was 7.9

  • actually it was 8.5 I am reserching it

  • Arnold Genthe is the famed photographer that capture most of the devastation on film or rather in images, there are numerous books available. I was fortunate to buy one at Stanford University campus bookstore years ago. You can also buy this DVD online as I did but if is silent & short for those true enthusiasts!

  • Some people said that some of the pictures are fake or enhanced to show more damage.

  • I want to thank the guy who capture this on film.

  • Ghosts. All of them, now...just ghosts, shadows remembered, but now gone forever...as will we all be one day...

  • how depressing ,,,but true

  • That's today.

  • Its amazing there is any footage at all

  • Sound recording with films wasn't possible then. That's only something from the twenties. Like in the early Laurel & Hardy movies.

  • it has no sound

  • it wouldn't surprise me if the moon did have a effect on tectonic activity but only in a small marginal way.

  • no sound?

  • Lot of corpses under all that ruble. All the people in this video are dead now. Must have been quite a site.

  • ok who ever said don't live in calforina, doesn't know what their talking about. i've live in SAN FRANSISCO all my life and nothing bad has ever happened to me. cali is a great place.

  • ya then one day you'll wake up and california will be falling into the ocean and you'll be all like crap!~

  • lolol sinicalgary is an expert geologist! the principle of uniformitarianism proves why this will never happen.

  • When or where did i claim to be a expert geologist? and obviously its not going to just "fall" in but give it another 200 years of eroding coastlines and another major earthquake or 2, a good chunk of Cali will be in the sea.

And thank you I learned the meaning of Uniformitarianism today as I am not a expert but love to learn ;)

  • I was being facetious. But still, no. Considering it took millions of years for the Andes to develop, I can't see any reason why California will be torn apart from an earthquake. Fires pose more danger to California than earthquakes.

  • Dude it took 6,000 years not Millions.

  • no. you're wrong.

  • dude it took at the least 40days and fourty nights dude just to make the grand canyon the same amount of time made the andes. Called the Flood coverd world water killed every thing made mountans made canyons 8 survived all died...

  • i don't believe in your religion.

  • i guess i'm going to hell then, right?

  • I don't know man I just know as a christian that has Jesus in me heart I have bin saed and will be on the new earth. So dude i don't know what will happen in your life you might turn and become a amazing christian and do a lot for lots of people I DON'T KNOW I am just saying what i have learned from my studys about history and geo. (btw the poler ice caps are geting larger so how is there global warming?)

  • I actually go to a religious college, so I understand religious conviction. This doesn't mean that being Christian is necessary to help people. I'm en environmental studies major and have felt a deep connection to the world around me my entire life. This is literally enough to fulfill me spiritually, because all I need to do is look outside to see my own higher power at work.

  • The USGS has concluded that Arctic sea ice is melting, and will continue to melt in the next 50 years. The permafrost is melting as a result, releasing the greenhouse gas methane. The Greenland Ice Sheet is melting as well (this covers 80% of Greenland). The West Antarctic Ice Sheet is also melting.

  • this earthquake is not the most significant earthquakes of all time wtf?? there are hundred off earthquakes that are worse than this eathquake in the world.?? maybee in the us ,!!!

  • Why would the President even allow people to live there when you know the area is known for earthquakes? It's like a deathtrap. What makes it even worse is that some buildings can't withstand major earthquakes like this one. My advice IS TO NOT LIVE IN CALIFORNIA!!!!!

  • Fortunatly, most San Franciscans don't take advice from dumb people. "Deathtrap"....sure.

  • yes, DO NOT live there, unless you're a 49rs season tickets holder.

  • Why not live in california, moviefan1014??? It's no like the earthquake is ganna be felt all the way at northern California you idiot.

  • woah this is an old video

  • well it was in 1906 lol

  • thats a dangerous earthquake

  • i think this is the oldest video in youtube!

  • wow! a classic video.

  • ...Well??? where's the fire, huh?

  • The fires were all but extinguished 3 days after the quake. This is most likely taken several days after, before reconstruction began on the town.

  • THe earthquake didnt cause the damage...was the fire in union square, actually one single building destroy most of downtown...thats all. Most houses and building not touch by that fire...still remain today.

  • my greatgrandma still lives in her house from the quake, still has holes in the baesment

  • liar

  • lol why would I lie

  • was your grandma alive when this 1906 earthquake happened?fool if she was alive. i mean its been close to a 102 years ever since this happened i mean is she 156 or 172lol.

  • im learning about natural hazards and im learning about what happend in san fransico

  • Lol San Andreas isn't a place, thats a video game, dreamgirl123.

It is a fault line though, earthquakes happen on it all the time.

  • san andreas is a city southeast of sacramento.

  • well the game was probably most likely to be named after the fault like noticing that los angeles and san francisco is in the game..i don't know how las vegas got into the game tho..haha

  • san andreas is not a city, its a fuckin earth what ever the fuck, thoes gay earth quake fault

  • thats so true u cangt predict earthqwuakes but i no how earthquakes are made though

  • cant predict?? Yea you can, read on, I'll predict...I predict that an earthquake is going to take place in California tomorrow. March 17, 2008

  • My prediction of the next big one hitting California will occur on the San Andreas fault line on Monday, April 12, 2010 at around 5:08:20 am local time at epicenter(13:08:21 UTC Greenwich time) in one of the big cities. More than 7,000 people will die in the earthquake and hundreds of thousands will be injured. The quake will register a magnitude 8.0 on the Richter Scale and the shaking will last for over 3 minutes.

  • Rather bold prediction, since earthquakes are impossible to predict.

  • I'm with ya

  • ...I predict ull get run over a Muni bus...thats sad.

  • ...I predict ull get run over a Muni bus...thats sad.

  • My 35th Birthday woohoo!Party on Wayne!!

  • you people need to know a little more about geology before making predictions. take some courses maybe.

  • I think u die

  • I was once in an earthquake on the island of Crete about 12 years ago and I fell over, I was devastated...it's no laughing matter amymint5 apart from the earthquake, these poor people had to live in black and white just like my grandpappie did.

  • My prediction of the next big earthquake hitting California will be on April 12, 2010 at around 5 in the morning and will be a magnitude 8.0 on the richter scale. It is that I'm just guessing if it might happen at that time or not.

  • who knows it mite but dont say that tho cos other ppl will be worried even if its not true

  • I think the next big earthquake will be in San Andreas

  • San Francisco is a better place for having known tragedy.

  • Not only did San Francisco have A Earthquake in 1906 they one in 1915 & Then Again in 1989

  • All rude comment, you should never laugh at other people - for what goes around will come around. Don't estimate God's power. This Earthquake happened after 100 years.

Since after year 2000 a lot of weather changes watch out it could be you next..Than it would be no laughing matter....

  • What the hell does the weather have to do about earthquakes? Also the number of large earthquakes that happen yearly has actually decreased.

  • this is so sad when u watch this video.. no cars. just horses.. ah what's a hundred year history done

  • If the San Andreas fault ruptures again in a 10.5,it would send 120ft.Rouge waves hurtling towards Japan.

  • valuemeal, Cali actually does have tornados.

  • goldy, you're an ass. They're designed for earthquakes.

  • Madgirl, are you talking about the 20 year old storm? That was hell.

  • From the ruins rose a great City

    of the American Century

A City of Every Kind of Innovation As Far as the Imagination

Could take it From UC Berkeley to UCSF

The 49ers ravished the Country but the City rose to great Heights and a gave way to the unprecendented century of wealth and prosperity from the San Francisco Century

  • see I'm probly gona die i live in BC vancouver and we ecpect a huge earthquake called "the big one" that will probly kill us all in Vancouver well if i doesnt then the 100 Ft. tsunamie will. lol all we can do is wait.

  • im quite shocked....im actually going to take the time to thank god i live in england, the worst we have had in the last 13-14 years(sinec i was alive) was last year, extreemly bad wind, we thought we was going to die in school. the roof was falling down, the tiles on the roof had fallen off, the school signat the gate had fell down, the lights flickering...we litrally shit our pants and it took us like 10 hrs to get our lunch, in which time we could sream our lives out!!!

  • Yeah we will stay on the fault, its beautiful here, you know you wish you were here. BTW don't let your head implode you ignorant jerk- for infojunkie-idiot

  • yep. keep living on a FAULT LINE. you people are dumb as shit, seriously. don't come crying when your city implodes.

  • when Holland is flooded, the USA will aid you.

  • Yeah and when the USA is flooded, will Holland aid us? Fat chance.

  • I'd rather have earthquakes than hurricanes, tornadoes, monsoons, or wildfires.

  • It was Bush's fault

  • LOL

  • because he hates black people and gays

  • Or because he wanted to clear the area to drill for oil. He used his magical powers to make the quake happen

  • and then he aced a pre-school test

  • tjlawson20: LOL Well said! :D

  • San Francisco is a better place for having known tragedy.

  • It must be at least 7-7,5 in Richter scale. Maybe 8.

  • Can you tell me someone the force of this earthquke in Rihter scale?

  • Amazing Vid. Seriously.

  • The big one's going to hit soon.

  • what do you mean??

  • I believe he means the greatest earthquake in 600,000 years. It is 60,000 years overdue to occur and by carbon dating they've found this to be so. Could happen today.

  • :| OMG!!welll i live in toronto so im not as sacred!!!even though i should be cas it can happen anytime and wiht all the highrise buildings their owuld ne countless amountz os deaths!!!Thank-you very much for answering ym question!!!!:)

  • A lot of destruction and desolation.

  • thank ja for retrofitting

  • lol

  • WOW you should restore this thing.

  • wow, what a cool video.

  • Actually, it depends on who "they" are. If "they" are your regular folk that don't care about anything intellectual then YES. It's obvious today as the majority of people could care less anout the facts and more about the simplistic. In 2107 we can only hope "they" do. He that has not learned from history is bound to repeat it

  • im preety sure its the highest quality of its time

  • Yes, it was. These cameras had to be hand cranked to record. But this film is still a wonderful thing! Just think of how far we've advanced in just 100 years. Pictures are so clear and vibrant now.

  • That said, converting the images to digital and to low resolution digital has made this hard to see here. I've seen footage from the 1906 quake on TV and it was much clearer than this. The films were not bad picture quality, it is just that it did not work out well for this video on YouTube.

  • sucks that its bad quality

    but it still interesting

  • lol, you cant blame them for not having digital cams, thats 1906!

  • let's wait the next

  • This is so worth restoring... even if you just adjust the contrast and add some appropriate background music. Amazing. Send it to the discovery channel or National Geographic.

  • And run it at the proper 18fps instead of 24. :)

  • theres gonna be an BIG earthquake in NYC soooon that may cause life trouble

  • Interesting

  • surreal

  • oldest Youtube EVAR.

  • cool
