beautiful song but terrible outfit - And as usual in Leander movies - these men in the background who all seem to be very much in the closet .Is .she supposed to be some gypsy woman who happened to walk into this bar? They seem to be quite shaken by her.
The guy playing the xylophone may possibly be Kurt Engel, who played and recorded with James Kok before Kok fled to England, and then may have played with Erhardt Bauschke. There are a couple of photos of the Kok orchestra on YT with Ingel in the back row on the vibes.

Die gute Nina ist seit einigen Jahren aber komplett durchgeknallt....na ja das liegt bestimmt daran das sie schon einmal von Außerirdischen entführt wurde.. :-) :-)
This clip showed up this afternoon on the classic arts video cable network, complete with the marimba player, and it had the scene before this one, with ZL as a lady bored with her drab marriage in Puerto Rico. She wanted to sing and there was some dialogue about her singing in Swedish or German. A couple of long shots showed her being a little heavier than one thinks of Zarah being.
As I feast on huge amounts of Zarah Leander's great work on You Tube, I always find this selection absolutely foreign to the rest of her work. Here she seems so listless and depressed. Was this just her fulfilment of an assigned role or is there more to it than that?
Besides the Leader playing the marimba and wearing braids, the old lady at the beginning seems to be limping--a clubfoot? Don't tell me its Goebbels in a dress.
comments about the nazis are unavoidable, when films like this are put into the context of the time. To the nazis, only german and latin american music was acceptable - and certainly not swing or jazz. To the anglo-saxon mind this sort of thing is utterly CAMP.
What on earth is 'the Anglo-Saxon mind'? Is it a racist concept like 'the Aryan man'? Even if jazz and swing were politically frowned upon (as enemy music during the war), there were certainly dance orchestras of the Paul Whiteman kind also in Nazi Germany, and there has been bands (Edmundo Ros, Xavier Cugat etc.) playing Latin American music in Britain and the States long after WWII.
I suggest you view Marika Rokk's 'Musik, Musik, Musik' clip on Youtube if you think the Nazis banned swing and jazz altogether - true, they didn't like it, but they tolerated a certain amount of it as escapist entertainment for the masses.
Or listen to Leander's 'Kann die Liebe Sunde Sein?' for that matter - it too is a nice swing tune
As much as machored135's joke was pretty stupid, it's actually not entirely irrelevant. "La Habanera" was an UFA production, and anyone who knows their German film history knows that after 1933, UFA was a Nazi propaganda machine. "La Habanera," though not as blatant as some of the worst examples, was no exception. If you really think about it, there's some pretty nasty ideology that drives the film's core.

Zarah leander ne se laissait pas influencer par la politique du régime, et s'en moquait. Elle fît carrière tout simplement. Elle fût "la leander" comme elle le disait si bien. Sa voix est unique ainsi que sa beauté de femme fatale.
This woman was one of the major pop stars of the Nazi era. She cannot be without some responsibility, especially when you think how easy it would have been to go back to Sweden!
But that's exactly what makes her music interesting. Pop in high totalitarianism... And all of things, I find it tuneful.

I'm a swede and I hate Zarah for licking the nazi-elite while they were murdering 100-thousands people. Which she knew. I can't find any excuse for that, no matter her voice.

Hi,
zarah's grandparents were not Jewish, nor was she a Nazi sympathizer. I have been in contact with Paul Zeiler who knew her personally and has written some books on her. I've been a fan of hers for over 30 years myself. Zarah made films in Germany because she was what the studios were looking for and she was near her native Sweden.
