  • THAT TRADEMARK HEAD-TILT @ 3:47-3:48 = THE REASON WHY CM WILL FOREVER BE MY FAV CHARACTER

  • Comment removed

  • Alastair Cooke mentioned that Alastair Cookie was the best tribute he ever had. I believe there's a photograph of both together out there.

  • Grover's getting great exercise with those stairs.

  • I use to think Cookie Monster said Monsterpiece Dinner. lol

  • 1 person got too dizzy watching this!

  • I remember this skit from back in the day. But "hey Grover nobody is forcing you run up and down the stairs! again and again lol!"

  • Ya know, I wonder if Alsiter Cook himself ever saw these when he was still alive..

What did he think of them?

  • Ah, these were the days when Jim Henson & Co. actually had a hand in Sesame Street. Proof of this is because Kermit and co. were often seen in SS at the time.

  • Grover is REALLY losing it here!

  • I liked the parts when Grover would run out of breath.

  • HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHA Grover moving upstairs/downstairs sounds like a porno xD

  • HA HA! This is really funny! Poor Grover! XD

  • I was doing quite a bit of this last week while helping a friend pack the moving truck.

  • I remember watching this when I was a kid. I knew PBS had a series called "Upstairs, Downstairs," but this was hilarious!! I'm glad I found it here on YouTube.

  • Better that Cookie Monster eats the pipe instead of smoking it. There is some fiber in that wooden pipe.

  • Three things distinguish this Monsterpiece Theater from later ones:

    1. The announcer at the beginning.

    2. The room that Cookie Monster (a.k.a. Allistair Cookie) was in.

    3. The fact that they zoomed back in toward the British flag logo "P" on the title card at the end.

  • @vanni9283 There are also three things that distinguish this segment from "Me Claudius":

    1. The segment starts with the standard title card while "Me Claudius" does not.

    2. Alistair Cookie's chair is different.

    3. While "Me Claudius" was much shorter and featured random monsters, this one is presented more like a typical later Monsterpiece Theater segment, featuring a main monster and running the usual 3-4 minute running time.

  • @wileyk209zback cookie monster cracks me up when he's so proper with his robe and pipe. pip pip to you too and tell hazel to put another shrimp on the barbie for me, will you? thanks, cherrios

  • @delvin41 You're mixing your accents, eh? What, were you taught proper speech by an Australian speech therapist??

  • Thats a great title card because u kno kids will ask wat that is a picture of, and they will learn that is the flag of England

  • Groover seems like he's having sex!

  • I knew he ate the pipe at the end of this!! I thought he would eat it at the end of "39 Stairs" but it was this one!! nice!

  • Definitely "Me, Claudius".

  • Anyone see the photo of Dr. Teeth?

  • Possibly banned due to tobacco reference.

  • More like PC police going wild!

  • i love this scene

  • I can't get over how cute Cookie looks in his little robe

  • Like I said, I am not sure if this was the first one, but it's definitely an old one, probably from at least 1980. While this one is presented more like a typical "Monsterpiece Theater" segment (unlike "Me Claudius"). it also has an announcer at the beginning, Alistair Cookie's room and chair are different, the story has its own title card and theme music, and it seems Alistair Cookie's voice doesn't sound as enthusiastic as in the other segments.

  • Materpiece Theatre did "Upstairs, Downstairs" during the 1970's.

  • They couldnt have just have cookie eating the pipe in every skit? It wouldnt technically be promoting smoking can it?

  • Grover must be in excellent shape, doing this every day.

  • aaaahahaha the beginning when he lowers his head

  • A pun on the British series.

  • Cookie Monster's a playa!

  • I'll bet in the other 792 episodes Grover's doing the same thing.

  • Well, we British like our repeats!

  • Love those BritComs(British Comedies).

  • Upstairs Downstairs was a drama

  • I love PBS. and those shows they air

  • 3:50 Smoking kills

  • Grover needs a life.

  • Cookie Monster looks so dignified with his pipe and smoking jacket.

  • looks distinguished

  • I love the 39 steps stairs better than the up and down stairs. because its more funnier

  • I always loved grover!

  • It's funny to watch this just after the "39 Stairs", where Grover barely had the stamina to climb those stairs. Here he goes up and down easily. I wonder what those other 792 episodes were like?

  • Oh no. He was getting winded pretty badly as he continued to go up and down. And like "The 39 stairs" he fell down the stairs at the end.

  • accoring to muppet wiki. Theres a picture of Dr. Teeth in this sketch (i'm not kidding)

  • You can make out his eyes, beard, and trademark toothy grin in the picture at the top of the stairs,we Muppet enthusiasts really have something here!

  • I like to pretend that Grover is chasing Dr. Teeth up the stairs many times. :)

  • This stuff was hilarious! My parents loved to watch Upstairs Downstairs on Masterpiece Theatre so I thought this was funny! Now I look and I see how he imitates Alastair Cooke's mannerisms and such. Just more proof that Sesame Street was written for adults! ROFL!

  • @flowertrue USED to be written for adults!

  • "alistair cookie" - genius!

  • It won't be deleted! This is very old school!

  • "You have GOT to be kidding me!" Ha ha ha !

  • "Aleister Cookie" that ROCKS.

And I love the parody of the Masterpiece Theatre theme, the Rondeau by Mouret. Complete with high baroque trumpets and everything!

  • Lol, I KNOW why there's that black circle at the bottom right corner of the picture! ;P

Maybe now it won't be deleted anymore!

  • why is the black circle there?

  • To cover up a certian copyrighted logo.

  • ahh i see thnx

  • Cookie Monster scared the hell outtae when I was 3!

  • I do not think the Upstairs head anywhere.

  • Oh my... poor Grover, he's really losing it.

  • "Me, Claudius" is the first.

  • That might be possible. I think that one is actually from 1979. This one is most likely from 1980.

  • Isn't Upstairs, Downstairs a television show from England?

  • Yes, this is what it's paroding

  • No, actually I think it's from the 70's.

  • It'd have to be either 1978 or 1979. But my best guess is 1979-1980

  • Exactly!

  • I think this one vvas the first...or at least the first one I remember seeing.

  • I believe this skit is most likely from 1980

  • Watch when Grover goes to the top of the stairs...there's a picture of Dr. Teeth behind him!
