Ah, these were the days when Jim Henson & Co. actually had a hand in Sesame Street. Proof of this is because Kermit and co. were often seen in SS at the time.
I remember watching this when I was a kid. I knew PBS had a series called "Upstairs, Downstairs," but this was hilarious!! I'm glad I found it here on YouTube.
@vanni9283 There are also three things that distinguish this segment from "Me Claudius":
1. The segment starts with the standard title card while "Me Claudius" does not.
2. Alistair Cookie's chair is different.
3. While "Me Claudius" was much shorter and featured random monsters, this one is presented more like a typical later Monsterpiece Theater segment, featuring a main monster and running the usual 3-4 minute running time.
@wileyk209zback cookie monster cracks me up when he's so proper with his robe and pipe. pip pip to you too and tell hazel to put another shrimp on the barbie for me, will you? thanks, cherrios
Like I said, I am not sure if this was the first one, but it's definitely an old one, probably from at least 1980. While this one is presented more like a typical "Monsterpiece Theater" segment (unlike "Me Claudius"). it also has an announcer at the beginning, Alistair Cookie's room and chair are different, the story has its own title card and theme music, and it seems Alistair Cookie's voice doesn't sound as enthusiastic as in the other segments.
It's funny to watch this just after the "39 Stairs", where Grover barely had the stamina to climb those stairs. Here he goes up and down easily. I wonder what those other 792 episodes were like?
This stuff was hilarious! My parents loved to watch Upstairs Downstairs on Masterpiece Theatre so I thought this was funny! Now I look and I see how he imitates Alastair Cooke's mannerisms and such. Just more proof that Sesame Street was written for adults! ROFL!

Alastair Cooke mentioned that Alastair Cookie was the best tribute he ever had. I believe there's a photograph of both together out there.

Better that Cookie Monster eats the pipe instead of smoking it. There is some fiber in that wooden pipe.

Three things distinguish this Monsterpiece Theater from later ones:
1. The announcer at the beginning.
2. The room that Cookie Monster (a.k.a. Allistair Cookie) was in.
3. The fact that they zoomed back in toward the British flag logo "P" on the title card at the end.

Materpiece Theatre did "Upstairs, Downstairs" during the 1970's.

They couldnt have just have cookie eating the pipe in every skit? It wouldnt technically be promoting smoking can it?

Oh no. He was getting winded pretty badly as he continued to go up and down. And like "The 39 stairs" he fell down the stairs at the end.

"Aleister Cookie" that ROCKS.
And I love the parody of the Masterpiece Theatre theme, the Rondeau by Mouret. Complete with high baroque trumpets and everything!

That might be possible. I think that one is actually from 1979. This one is most likely from 1980.
