  • Carl Sagan. where science and beauty collide.

  • 27 didn't like??? they msut have NO chance to breed.... let's do a favor to the humankind!

  • If all recordings of all TV shows faced destruction and only one show could be preserved, Cosmos is the obvious choice.

  • This intro never gets old. I've watched this so many times.

  • Sagan says the age of the universe is unknown to ordinary human understanding. Not anymore Carl, 13.7 billion years. We will be doing things in twenty years said to be impossible, and learning the unknown.

  • @lordcodicus We will indeed, but I think you're misunderstanding Carl a little.

What he meant by "unknown to ordinary human understanding" was that merely stating that the big bang happened 13.7 bya means very little to people. You might as well say it's 32 Blaglock™.

Instead he would make wonderful use of analogy, like he did with the cosmic calendar in the same episode this clip is from, to put these things in an easier to understand perspective.

Do a search for it. It´s great.

  • @lordcodicus its 13.7 billion years to the observable edge of the universe. The figure you cited is not the actual age of our universe.

  • PATHETIC SONG

  • @tenijosh i love that song, it makes me cry

  • @tenijosh What?

  • Cosmos a personal voyage short summary: Carl Sagan, awesomeness of the cosmos and the perfect elegancy of a dandelion.

The remake of Cosmos better not miss out on the dandelion. Good luck!

  • Telemetrik's Cosmos comes to mind when I watch this. I cant look at this guy without hearing dnb

  • "Some men just want to watch the world learn."

  • @songersogner Who said that? :D

  • @Alphacaliber I don't remember. However, I don't want to take the credit. :)

  • I was lead to here by family guy

  • I remember the very first time I saw this. I was simply blown away. I still am. It is propably the best peice of video EVER put together!!

  • I used to watch this high all the time

  • He sounds like the Illusive Man from Mass Effect 2...

  • @BadgerStyler You mean Illusive man sounds like Carl.

  • @Nassault630 what? martin sheen sounds like carl sagan, thats new

  • going from Google images of Slinder Man to Cosmos on youtube, wtf and htf did i get here lol

  • love this! was pointed this way by eyeearbrain.webs.com

  • best documentaries of the 80s and are unmatched uptill this day, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage and Life on Earth by David Attenborough

  • I had a dream where me and Carl Sagan talked as we took a long lift up a spiral staircase and he disappeared at the end of it.

  • I miss you Carl Sagan

  • a still more glorious dawn awaits...

  • When I watch this I have light shiver, its a cosmic feeling making me aware of what I am and what everything is about - this feeling is universal. Yes, I can feel it! Thats what really matters! Just feel!

  • To those that haven't heard: There is a sequel to "Cosmos" currently in prodcution right now thats being scheduled for a 2013 release. Ann Druyan (Sagan's widow) and Seth McFarlene (creater of Family Guy) are producing and is being hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson.

  • @misinglink15 Wow, I can't wait.

    Thanks for sharing

  • What a legend, I hope one day I can contribute something of value to world and show my gratitude by adding somewhere 'Thanks Carl'.

  • he's depressingly smart

  • Epic Rap Battles of HISTORY~~!

  • In genes, and brains, and books... and now on DVD!

  • vangelis...............

  • Even though the presentation and even some of the science is a bit outdated, every time I watch an episode of this show, or even just this 5 minute clip of the intro, it always seems to soothe my mind whenever it's feeling distressed. The enthusiasm and even atmosphere Carl Sagan makes in this show is still inspiring and uplifting.

The we are made of star stuff bit always gets to me, too. Not just because of how beautiful of a line it is, but because it's actually true, not just a pretty line.

  • Happy Birthday Carl Sagan ❤

  • Happy birthday, Carl.

  • Happy Bday Carl Sagan! Bless you!!!!

  • hundreds and hundreds of years old

  • Mountain Dew is the best soda ever made!!!

  • It makes me sad and angry that the governments of our planet care more about shooting guns at each other then exploring the solar system, colonizing and terraforming planets etc, if only alot more people of power were more like carl sagan. :/

  • @ClaylandStudios yes i agree. it's a shame that business men and lawyers decide the fate of humanity...

it should be scientists and philosophers. hopefully that day will come before we destroy ourselves.

  • @MrBR420 Yes, all we are really doing is destroying ourselves, but if we are wiped out earth will harbor another sentient species very long from when that happens if it does, and i am almost completely sure there is another sentient species out there in the universe, hopefully much smarter then our own that can learn more about the universe.

  • The beauty in his mind is beyond comprehensible! What a wonderful human, he will be always be remembered as a true Cosmic child!

  • I'm Christian, but I freakin' love Cosmos and Carl Sagan! :D

  • @biggyfofilly - oh yeah - only "smart" people are pot heads, right? Brilliant.

  • this guys awsome, people need to focus more on common sense and see how big the universe is before we start judging one another with religion.......

  • 25 people are religious nuts

  • Who could have possibly 'disliked' this????

  • Sagan was an inspiration :' )

  • 25 people didn't watch the intro.

  • thanks carl for this hidden nod to chemists like myself...love the dz^2 orbital @ 0:00 - 0:13...we all miss you.

  • Just how old is our planet? Scientists believe it is four- hundred and hundreds of years old.

Scientists have determined that the earth was created by a-GAWWWWWD-ig bang.

If you look at the bones of a-JESUS-saurusrex, it's clear by the carbon dating that- MOUNTAIN DEW IS THE BEST SODA EVER MADE!

  • "We are a way for stars to know themselves"=blew my ducking mind!!!

  • @lugogustavo42 Actually, it´s "we are a way for the cosmos/universe to know itself", but I know what you mean. Blew my ducking mind too! :)

  • @threedotsdead Every word ever uttered by that great man-Sagan- blew my ducking mind

  • Imagine if he was a crack head..the shit that would come out of his mouth

  • 25 people believe that Carl Sagan is an anti Christ.

  • @Leofox94 and you believe you'll get thumbs up for putting such a witty comment. but you won't :D

  • @focista6 in the Carl's name what r you talking about! :D People have to support me. :P if they're truly sagan fans.

  • Cosmos & Carl - never missed an episode

  • @CptFrenchFry I am telling you exactly that. It is not the thing itself that requires observation in science (although evolution has been directly observed, so that's irrelevent to the argument). for example you cannot "see" gravity, but you can see it's effects.

In that same way you do not have to 'see' evolution' (although you can, if you live long enough) but you see it's effects every day. Us.

What empirical evicence? it keeps happening, it repeats, it occasionally reverses. See it.

  • @CptFrenchFry "macroevolution" as you call it, the transition from one species to another has been observed in both the fossil record and through DNA evidence. the inevitable and inescapable result of microevolution is macroevolution. What do you think the alternative could be?

Demanding first hand obeservations if a bit of a failiure to understand how science works, so don't you dare suggest other people violate the scientific method without understanding it yourself!

  • @CptFrenchFry Evolution itself is a fact, the theory relates to the continued study there of, it's not 'darwin's theory' now, it's well beyond that. Darwin is not the highest authority on evolution, he's just a famous name that appeared in its history.

  • We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces. - Carl Sagan

  • He sounds like Jim Nantz

  • Most calming music EVER...

  • @Ecocide112 In case you don't know, it is called Heaven and Hell by Vangelis, so that you can download it.

  • @TheScienceguy1998 Thanks a million man! :D

  • I had the most awesome, nerdy dream last night. I dreamt that Carl Sagan was still alive and he was secretly living in an apartment right next to mine! I came over to his place, and for some reason, he offered me some burritos. We then proceeded to talk about planets, stars, galaxies, and the universe in general! Ah, I was so mad when I woke from that dream =s.

  • @mazuera Interesting, me and my friend were stoned and we agreed that if we could bring back anybody's spirit in sceance we would bring back Carl Sagan. The first thing he'd say we figured (in response to coming back from the dead as a ghost) would be something like "This is a part of the Cosmos we do NOT understand."

  • @mazuera I had a weird dream like that too. He had invited me over for breakfast and asked me to write an inspirational story about....and then my girlfriend woke me up.

  • @mazuera I had a dream that I was joy riding with him and some friends on board Voyager 1.

Weirdest and greatest dream ever had :P

  • @mazuera That sounds like the most awesome dream ever haha

  • @mazuera burritos? how stoned did you guys get?

  • Trippy.

  • To EVERYONE trying to make sence of....whatever. I applaud all attempts!

  • a cosmos with in a cosmos with in a cosmos

  • @academicroach mind = blown

  • I'm so glad I rediscovered Cosmos, I remember as a kid in the very early 90's and seeing an episode or two play, but that was it. Fast forward about 4 years from the present and the magic of youtube reintroduced the show, and it's one of the few that i revisit from time to time and watch the series. Quality programming like this, no matter how old it may be, is never "dated".

  • Yer watching Google wanker.

  • we would have got along just fine me and Carl, what a total PHD hippy he was, is and always will be!!!

  • They should remake cosmos with Ken Ham or Kent Hovind. Bring real biblical science back into the mainstream.

  • @DebunkingEvolution There's absolutely no such thing as "biblical science".

  • @hardcoded i beg to differ, we can clearly discuss the chemical composition of said book.

  • @hardcoded Of course there's such a thing as "biblical science". You use the Bible as a historical reference and cross analyze it against archaeological finds. Duhh...

  • @URProductions Point taken. But any other ancient religious text can be a reference for history, archeology, anthropology and other real sciences.

  • @DebunkingEvolution can they fit a camera crew for hovind in a cell?

  • @DebunkingEvolution Like it was during the Dark Ages?

The stupidity is strong with this one.

  • hahaha his views are way off. Chuck Norris jizzed the universe into life, dipshits.

  • @thewhiteSRR cmon man, the only people who take you seriously are other 22 year olds.

  • I'm reading the book Cosmos at the moment, needless to say it's excellent.

  • this guy has spent to much time in the cosmos. his view on our species is way off

  • Comment removed

  • @mrsaganscosmos i never shared my view on the universe.

  • Darwin went to seminary school... he didn't disbelieve in a Supreme Being on the other hand he saw a lot of things on his sea journey that were not accounted for in his scriptural studies.... you cannot deny evolution there is too much evidence for it. How life started is still up for grabs...go to town.

  • @sunspotting32 I read Darwin's autobiography last week. When Darwin set off on the Beagle voyage he was still a believer that each species had been separately created. At Cambridge he read William Paley's Natural Theology which presented the famous watchmaker argument. A big influence on Darwin was Lyell's Principles of Geology which helped shape Darwin's thinking. Through his travels across South America he became more and more sure that species were not immutable but might instead change.

  • @DebunkingEvolution Prove that your God exists so?

  • @DebunkingEvolution Your name is retarded, and so is your brain. The bible was written by Human beings, saying that God spoke to them. Thats not proof, anyone can say that, and write what they believe. There is no God, and all religion is stupid only brings war and death; separation.

  • To me, Carl Sagan is one of the greatest human beings to ever live.

"We're made of star stuff. We are a way for the cosmos to know itself"

  • is he wearing make up?

  • @kiritik Yes. Just like everyone else on television.

  • The Cosmos is all there is, or ever was...or ever will be

  • the most beautiful, intro ever..ever...ever..... CARL SAGAN was the man who taught me to love the cosmos, the universe, the stars and planets. He was master.

  • I salute to one of our greatest. Narrator. Scientist. Thinker. Maker. We owe you a bright future.

  • I heard that we've learned more about the Cosmos in the last 20 years then in our entire history! If that is true, then it is truly a great time to be alive! We are SO lucky just to be here witnessing this strange thing called existence.

  • Carl Sagan is my Idol.

  • "Sagan was a user and advocate of marijuana..."

  • @GanjaBeard510 Well, anonymous advocate, but still.

  • @threedotsdead Finally one that knows the facts. I guess you read his books?

  • @Popyoks Well... a few. But that particular fact I learned from Wikipedia :p

  • @threedotsdead , really? why ? what about lsd?

  • @faridjabba What about LSD?

  • @GanjaBeard510 If your as smart as Sagan smoking marjuana only makes him 1000 times smarter then we could ever be.

  • @GanjaBeard510 marijuana causes psychosis and rape and murder everybody knows its way worse than alcohol and meth like fo real

    DOGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

  • Before the cosmos people did not understand the cosmos like the late Dr. Carl Sagan introduced it to us and explained it to us so that we can have a better understanding of the cosmos. 

  • Im POSITIVE Dr Sagan and Jesus were drinking buddies!!!

  • THEY'RE REMAKING COSMOS!!

Neil degrasse Tyson is gonna be the host.

  • @kidkong584 I was so excited when I heard that! And then I found out it's also being produced by Seth McFarlance and I about shat myself!

  • @thebutler89 lol I can't wait for it.

  • @kidkong584 Not remaking, but continuing. So I hear; gonna be wicked anyway! :D

  • @kidkong584 seriously?!

  • @starlogic99 yup =) It'll be on FOX in 2013.

  • @kidkong584 love me some chocolate sagan.

  • @kidkong584 when does it come out?

  • @kidkong584 YEAH!!! Neil deGrasse Tyson is awesome, but it won't be complete without Sagan. Too bad, unavailable for broadcast. :(

  • @kidkong584 I was extremely excited to hear that...

Until I saw that it was scheduled to air in 2013.

    On fox.

  • Okay Neil, your turn.

  • Carl Sagan = Agent Smith from The Matrix.

  • albert einstein - Carl Sagan - stephen hawking

  • Science = Big words that are not full of shit. Religion = Big words that are full of indoctrinate shit.

  • 22 poeple are not made of star stuff

  • When I watch this I feel saddened by the loss of such a man. When I watch this I feel inspired to do greater things. When I watch this I feel at peace. Thank-you Carl Sagan for touching my life and so many others, for educating, and making the world a better place. You will be sorely missed.

  • so many memmories... such a teacher/entertainer/inspirer.. sadly missed

  • Eyes tear up with those first few seconds... the best damn program series on american tv ever. He's in the cosmos now, floating between giants.

  • "...Come with me."

    *tears*

    R.I.P. <3

  • @PixelSlayer247 I know...I know. It hurts so badly doesnt it?

  • Why do we always assume that extraterrestrial life is more intelligent than us? I'm not trying to be arrogant or anything, but is there some big part of the picture I'm missing?

  • @deathlyfruitloops yes, the fact that we are a young specie, from a young solar system, and probably most civilizations are more advanced than us

  • Mathematics is universal, but our way of working with it is not. I've always thought a base-12 numerical system would be more efficient myself. replace the numbers "ten" and "eleven" with, say "nan" and "tee".

But prime numbers are always prime numbers no matter where or what you are. So are pi and e.

In a base 12 number system, we would call the first 7 primes two, three, five, seven, tee, eleven and fifteen.

  • @dmitriboukalov Mathematics is not universal. our equations seen to apply, but remember that our number system is anthropomorphic: 10 fingers and 10 toes = a number system based on 10. We may find that a civilization has solved even the most complex theorems by simply using a system that reflects the species's 14 digits. We're limited by the physical structure of our own being.

  • How can you people watch such a calming video and still argue?

  • The moment the music starts playing at 0:02 I get sad for some reason..

  • the world desperately needs more Carl Sagan(s)

I hope his life continues to reverberate through many peoples lives. Perhaps one day, humanity will be changed in positive ways thanks to his life.

    We miss you, Carl..

  • Wonderful. Serene, informative, lush.

  • 21 people were right, 2059 should have kept searching to find something educational.

  • i was watching seananners

  • The nature of the universe is to express every concept, question and belief that is possible. So don’t feel sad when someone expresses stupidity and ignorance and fear because that is all part of the complex tapestry that is the universe. The universe is everything. When every possibility has be realised the universe will once again breath in to nothingness.

  • 20 idiots watched this video.

  • we're all made out of one rock of pure crack

  • Sagan made PBS build The Ship Of The Imagination because he was jealous of Feynman's van.

  • Life exists throughtout the cosmos. It cannot be otherwise. A larger life awaits. Very soon, we shall discover shattering mysteries...

  • I love Cosmos

  • @dmitriboukalov Science ≠ boring language.
