Sagan says the age of the universe is unknown to ordinary human understanding. Not anymore Carl, 13.7 billion years. We will be doing things in twenty years said to be impossible, and learning the unknown.
@lordcodicus We will indeed, but I think you're misunderstanding Carl a little.
What he meant by "unknown to ordinary human understanding" was that merely stating that the big bang happened 13.7 bya means very little to people. You might as well say it's 32 Blaglock™.
Instead he would make wonderful use of analogy, like he did with the cosmic calendar in the same episode this clip is from, to put these things in an easier to understand perspective.
When I watch this I have light shiver, its a cosmic feeling making me aware of what I am and what everything is about - this feeling is universal. Yes, I can feel it! Thats what really matters! Just feel!
To those that haven't heard: There is a sequel to "Cosmos" currently in prodcution right now thats being scheduled for a 2013 release. Ann Druyan (Sagan's widow) and Seth McFarlene (creater of Family Guy) are producing and is being hosted by Neil Degrasse Tyson.
Even though the presentation and even some of the science is a bit outdated, every time I watch an episode of this show, or even just this 5 minute clip of the intro, it always seems to soothe my mind whenever it's feeling distressed. The enthusiasm and even atmosphere Carl Sagan makes in this show is still inspiring and uplifting.
The we are made of star stuff bit always gets to me, too. Not just because of how beautiful of a line it is, but because it's actually true, not just a pretty line.
It makes me sad and angry that the governments of our planet care more about shooting guns at each other then exploring the solar system, colonizing and terraforming planets etc, if only alot more people of power were more like carl sagan. :/
@MrBR420 Yes, all we are really doing is destroying ourselves, but if we are wiped out earth will harbor another sentient species very long from when that happens if it does, and i am almost completely sure there is another sentient species out there in the universe, hopefully much smarter then our own that can learn more about the universe.
CARL SAGAN: "Much more of our free time should be spent with things that are intellectually valuable - reading, solving problems, thinking critically. I'm not saying people should stop watching TV, but a lot less wouldn't hurt. Brain Building by Marilyn vos Savant and other books like it do a good job of laying out all the ways education and intelligence can help us and, more importantly, how to foster intellectual growth. There are so many wonders that knowledge and the intellect can bring us."
CARL SAGAN - "Almost no one attempts to educate themselves on the basics of science and technology, yet our society is based on these. TV takes up far too much of our time and is apparently much more attractive to most of us than the beauty and wonder of science. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces." - CARL SAGAN
@CptFrenchFry I am telling you exactly that. It is not the thing itself that requires observation in science (although evolution has been directly observed, so that's irrelevent to the argument). for example you cannot "see" gravity, but you can see it's effects.
In that same way you do not have to 'see' evolution' (although you can, if you live long enough) but you see it's effects every day. Us.
What empirical evicence? it keeps happening, it repeats, it occasionally reverses. See it.
@CptFrenchFry "macroevolution" as you call it, the transition from one species to another has been observed in both the fossil record and through DNA evidence. the inevitable and inescapable result of microevolution is macroevolution. What do you think the alternative could be?
Demanding first hand obeservations if a bit of a failiure to understand how science works, so don't you dare suggest other people violate the scientific method without understanding it yourself!
@CptFrenchFry Evolution itself is a fact, the theory relates to the continued study there of, it's not 'darwin's theory' now, it's well beyond that. Darwin is not the highest authority on evolution, he's just a famous name that appeared in its history.
We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces. - Carl Sagan
I had the most awesome, nerdy dream last night. I dreamt that Carl Sagan was still alive and he was secretly living in an apartment right next to mine! I came over to his place, and for some reason, he offered me some burritos. We then proceeded to talk about planets, stars, galaxies, and the universe in general! Ah, I was so mad when I woke from that dream =s.
@mazuera Interesting, me and my friend were stoned and we agreed that if we could bring back anybody's spirit in sceance we would bring back Carl Sagan. The first thing he'd say we figured (in response to coming back from the dead as a ghost) would be something like "This is a part of the Cosmos we do NOT understand."
@mazuera I had a weird dream like that too. He had invited me over for breakfast and asked me to write an inspirational story about....and then my girlfriend woke me up.
I'm so glad I rediscovered Cosmos, I remember as a kid in the very early 90's and seeing an episode or two play, but that was it. Fast forward about 4 years from the present and the magic of youtube reintroduced the show, and it's one of the few that i revisit from time to time and watch the series. Quality programming like this, no matter how old it may be, is never "dated".
@hardcoded Of course there's such a thing as "biblical science". You use the Bible as a historical reference and cross analyze it against archaeological finds. Duhh...
Darwin went to seminary school... he didn't disbelieve in a Supreme Being on the other hand he saw a lot of things on his sea journey that were not accounted for in his scriptural studies.... you cannot deny evolution there is too much evidence for it. How life started is still up for grabs...go to town.
@sunspotting32 I read Darwin's autobiography last week. When Darwin set off on the Beagle voyage he was still a believer that each species had been separately created. At Cambridge he read William Paley's Natural Theology which presented the famous watchmaker argument. A big influence on Darwin was Lyell's Principles of Geology which helped shape Darwin's thinking. Through his travels across South America he became more and more sure that species were not immutable but might instead change.
@DebunkingEvolution Your name is retarded, and so is your brain. The bible was written by Human beings, saying that God spoke to them. Thats not proof, anyone can say that, and write what they believe. There is no God, and all religion is stupid only brings war and death; separation.
the most beautiful, intro ever..ever...ever..... CARL SAGAN was the man who taught me to love the cosmos, the universe, the stars and planets. He was master.
I heard that we've learned more about the Cosmos in the last 20 years then in our entire history! If that is true, then it is truly a great time to be alive! We are SO lucky just to be here witnessing this strange thing called existence.
Before the cosmos people did not understand the cosmos like the late Dr. Carl Sagan introduced it to us and explained it to us so that we can have a better understanding of the cosmos.
When I watch this I feel saddened by the loss of such a man. When I watch this I feel inspired to do greater things. When I watch this I feel at peace. Thank-you Carl Sagan for touching my life and so many others, for educating, and making the world a better place. You will be sorely missed.
Why do we always assume that extraterrestrial life is more intelligent than us? I'm not trying to be arrogant or anything, but is there some big part of the picture I'm missing?
Mathematics is universal, but our way of working with it is not. I've always thought a base-12 numerical system would be more efficient myself. replace the numbers "ten" and "eleven" with, say "nan" and "tee".
But prime numbers are always prime numbers no matter where or what you are. So are pi and e.
In a base 12 number system, we would call the first 7 primes two, three, five, seven, tee, eleven and fifteen.
@dmitriboukalov Mathematics is not universal. our equations seen to apply, but remember that our number system is anthropomorphic: 10 fingers and 10 toes = a number system based on 10. We may find that a civilization has solved even the most complex theorems by simply using a system that reflects the species's 14 digits. We're limited by the physical structure of our own being.
Check out this "We Humans Are Capable of Greatness" video. The commentary by Carl Sagan is amazing and the background video is breathtaking. Definitely worth a watch.
People i have the full series uploaded on youtube from carl sagan , 13 series of each +-1 hour .... thumbs up to spread the word and subscribe please ... Carl sagan is the best teacher i ever had in life about who we are and how to think about it !!
The nature of the universe is to express every concept, question and belief that is possible. So don’t feel sad when someone expresses stupidity and ignorance and fear because that is all part of the complex tapestry that is the universe. The universe is everything. When every possibility has be realised the universe will once again breath in to nothingness.

Dammit to hell, I cant stand when try to make an educational video but its littered with so much poetry and nonsense. Most people dont know where one end and the other begins. "Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity?" Gimme a break, I expected more.

I'm not trying to be arrogant or anything, but is there some big part of the picture I'm missing?
deathlyfruitloops 6 months ago
@deathlyfruitloops yes, the fact that we are a young specie, from a young solar system, and probably most civilizations are more advanced than us
