  • Splendid.

  • I love her, unique

  • I love Miss Billie Holiday.

  • It's a shame that her life was so hard. Her voice was one of a kind. I had some old records with her music and they were beyond belief.

  • When I was one year of age i must have heard this one...

  • Wow, Billie Holiday listened to Tom Chick's podcast?

  • My Favorite version of this tune period.

  • WOW! Simply beautiful!

  • didnt Marilyn Monroe sang this song? or Jane Rusell?

  • @Yobidefy maybe Jane Russell (in a movie with Marilyn?) maybe not ..Jane also sang Diamonds Are a Girls Best Friend.....in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

  • beautiful.

  • I am way to young to have ever heard her live but man do i wish i coulda. I believe in her own words she expressed in an interview that every time she sang ... the mood, the tempo, the tembre of her voice was different.

What it must have been to be in the room when she performed with all those unique musicians, and to know that no one would ever hear that song quite that way again unless it was recorded at that time.

  • hope she sings me into eternity

  • The melody of my life :)

  • alas..tea music

  • 240p for the best effect.

  • perfect

  • soooooo goooood

  • she is sweet singer;-)

  • This is for Boone.

  • It's the first time a song makes me cry when I'm not sad.

  • All in this song is great, simply beautiful. The most beautiful.

  • one day i'm gonna be rich, chilling in my penthouse getting head with my eyes closed and with this playing in the background lol

  • @mrmillion94 just shoot yourself now,do not pass go-do not collect 200 bucks-and never, ever have kids. Go now.

  • @aknowneemus lol what could've possibly made you so mad?

  • Few are as amazing as Billie, but Bette Midler... I'll take it.In the Now Time she and Cyndi Lauper are the Queens.

  • there was a version of this done by cab calloway and it probably the best one i ever heard, he was accompanied by a piano. if anyone has it please upload here thanks.

  • Billie: nothing (human voice or instrumental) compares to you... and I have always thought that the Sinatra version of 1965, with Basie, was unbeatable...

  • EU ADORO BILLIE! GRATA, ELIZABETH

  • dhphotog-Right On! She was the best in this interpretation and a few others.

  • I wish my speakers were louder

  • All the great Negresses have all met the same fate. They have gotten destroyed in their prime always by bad black motherfuckers working for the system.I truly hate Black men who hate Black women. If you gonna hate somebody, hate that bitch who used to slap you around as a child.;The one you are still scared of.....Beyonce did the right thing by getting married to a strong Black man who takes no shit.

  • you just can't manufacture soul..........priceless

  • @ prettyboyroy This was recorded in mid fifties. Much better production values than her early stuff. Album is "Songs for Distingue` Lovers"

  • This is song is a masterpiece. If you see the version Bette Midler sang to Johnny Carson, it will make you tear up. She was so sincere in her words to Johnny, even he shed a tear or two. It was on his last night on the Tonight Show.

  • From the finest session Billie ever did.

The solos on this album were astonishing..such emotion.

  • When I am feeling low and need to reenergize my mind, body and soul this is the angel I listen to. Sorry Mrs Holiday but it's you're fault because, the first note I heard from you I fell in love with you. An amazing woman with an amazing talent!

  • KEEP IT COMING!

  • there are just too many reasons why i am in love with this song

  • it's a trumpet and i agree that the clarity is remarkable.

  • One for the road mylady!!!

    R.I.P

  • the thing that made billie so praised because she had a voice that cant be copied it sounded like a little girl singing to herself and you were listening in on her talking to herself she had emotions that actully went side by side with her songs which and she had an amazing virbrato and real good at bending notes.Ella and BIllie paved everybodys way they were so damn good

  • @HERBLANDZ Its true. Sinatra studied Billie. He modeled his phrasing on her style. When it comes to Billie, Ella, and Sarah Vaughan, there is no hype. They are Jazz music personified in voice. Can't forget the innovator of Jazz singing, Louis Armstrong. Perhaps the most influential vocalist of the 20th century, or certainly one of them.

  • she's brilliant.:)

  • Hey..thanks alot.

I love the music this slow. :D

  • The style like this rhythm hooks me up.

    Who else makes this?

  • Simply the best,

  • Luv this track. She was indeed special among jazz singers. One of the very best...she and Ella were both amazing...

  • This work here, the words the music the song and this particular performance coupled with Sinatra's is one of the finest art pieces ever composed in the modern civilization. I am not exaggerating a bit :)

  • Describes any situation your ending in your life.

  • The Lady Day will live forever in the hearts of those who like their music real and uncompromising; even grittay!

  • Could listen to this endlessly :)

  • This is the song that the crazy grandmother got up and sang during Thomas J's funeral in My Girl.

  • grief wats good w. the lyrics smh correct those plsz

  • I was suprised by the clarity of 1.) The clarity of that sax... And 2.) The clarity of her voice on this video when it first comes on. Nice and clear...

  • @prettyboytroy555 it might be a digitally remastered version. If not, I'm VERY surprised at the clarity of this recording as compared to the rest.

  • @prettyboytroy555 I don't know if anyone else has said but it's actually a trumpet (with a Harmon mute) rather than a sax

  • @jazzscherzo Two words: Dinah. Washington.

  • DAYUM, who is that on sax?? Some tasty, breathy shit right there!

  • @TheWhisperingCactus the IMMORTAL Ben Webster!

  • thank you

  • No one will ever replace Lady day.

  • J ADORE

  • <3 Billie <3

  • A True Great.

  • great performance, althou in my opinion frank sinatra still holds the best rendition of this song.

may they both rest in peace.

  • i wish to have her voice always in my mind

  • ♥ .

  • she taught frank about phrasing the lyric many a late night in nyc clubs in the fourties---frank learned his lessons well

  • i just love her!!!!

  • This is my shit.

  • both are good tone to very different way. billies version sounds like she singing real good to a closing bar.ellas version is like she sitting at the bar ordering drinks.it depends how you feel ellas voice always had sexiness mixed with sadness.billie was sexy but she always sounded just sad. Both are untouchable.

  • billie holiday la mejor cantande de jazz de todos los tiempos

  • Johnny Mercer is one of the most underrated songwriters in music history.

  • Thank all of you that post these amazing artists. I am only now discovering these wonderful genres and they are timeless and priceless. Thank you.

  • @TheWick53 My guitar teacher (45 yra ols) is also discovering these beautiful songs and great artists. I am 72 so of course I grew up these gifted musicians. I feel so blessed to be able to introduce him to this music that he so loves now also.

  • Nobody better than Lady Day! NOBODY! God blessed this great woman with such a gift! Such a GIFT! Heaven is so LUCKY! So FORTUNATE to have her singing with the Angels right now!

  • She is and always will be the Queen of jazz, Thanks for the great posting!

  • At the end of the day I always come back for you..

  • I heard this live last night, around 3am est on my local jazz station. It was just AMAZING. I wish I had access to that version.

  • I love this version. I recently discovered it and can't hear it enough. A fan of Sinatra's version but this one is the best.

  • Who are the people that DON'T like this? WTF!!!! Dreay song, amazing voice!

  • She always sounds "grandma-ish" in a good way :)

  • Billie Holiday sang from the soul.no two songs ever sounded the same

depending on her mood..a CLASS ACT so glad she shared her talent.

    Thank you Lady Day!!!

  • love you princess xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • @ Kaztwl~gives new meaning to black-irish(haha that was supposed to be a lil funny) i absolutely love billie holiday! so wonderful to relax to

  • @ Kaztwl~gives new meaning to black-irish(haha that was supposed to be a lil funny) i absolutely love billie holiday!

  • Although I think she is one of our best interpretive singers, and she does this song such justice, it just seems because of the genre its best sung by a man, not being insensitive or being a man pig, just seems its better from a man. I love Billie!

  • good job Billie

  • Thank you for gracing this earth with you presence xxxxxx

  • You know people say she is "black" and she is defined as being a black singer, but from what I see her looks pretty much white to me. I am glad the black or white thing does not define singers so much today.

  • @baiba6 she looks like my cousin and we're Puerto Rican...now..she was of Irish father and African American moms...there you got it...a black and white make a Puerto Rican..

  • @MrLouieLove GEEZE IF ONLU MORONS COULD PROVE THINGS I CAN POST ANY PERSON AND SOMEONE ALWAYS SAYS THEY ARE RELATED

  • Her placement of words in phrases in sentences in the whole thing is impeccable and makes the song unique. Her musical phrasing is equally exceptional. She has to be the greatest singer of the 20th century in the genre of jazz and standars..

  • Check out my cover of One For My Baby at my channel! :)

  • Poor Boone.

  • @xXLtStrikeXx

    I love Boone. He's such a hardass. :D

  • Her voice and technique were hers' alone. The perfect mix of Blues and Jazz.

  • so haunting, beautifull x rip billie x

  • thank you GOD...for this music angel...

  • *-*

  • she's just so amazing

  • Inmortal music, it would live forever...

  • whoever posted this, thanks.

  • Madam Billie, thanx for the voice. God bless your soul. :)

  • I LOVEE YOUUUUU BILLIE MAY BAYBI.

  • I LOVEE YOUUUUU BILLIE MAY BAYBI

  • <3 <3 <3

  • "Songs For Distingue Lovers" was , in my opinion, the finest Billie Holiday record ever.(sorry if i offend others opinions) I bought it originally as a budget price LP on 'Music For Pleasure' in 1970 (UK). The UK LP was called "One For My Baby" . Recently got the whole session on double CD. Fantastic backing from Ben Webster, Harry Edison & Barney Kessel on guitar, amongst others.

  • At 1:15 here eyes are soo sad......

  • Those earrings at 1:55 are so cool! And her make-up at 3:55 is gorgeous. And okay, why does she favor Neicy Nash at 5:30 (and a little at 1:15, also)?

Hey, I notice stuff like that. She is obviously an inspiration to singers like Chrisette Michele and maybe Jazmine Sullivan, but NOBODY can touch Lady Day's sound.

  • Smile! haha I know what you mean. thank you for the kind words and strait facts! Please do stay in touch! god bless you. You brought a smile to my heart. Thanks

  • Wow I would love to search my roots and find that this beautiful lady was in my family!!!! There are not many if any women of her caliber alive anymore. Ms. Horne gone, Ethel Waters, Bessie Smith....etc the singers today could only wish they could REALLY sing!!!! ( I hate talking aobut their personal lives, I am talking about their class, style, legacy to the black race) thanks for this post!

  • @arlenerogerswilhite So true. Far too many Generation X'ers like to talk about being "classy" when they obviously have no CLUE what it means to have class. It seems that our LOST young generation of undereducated babies having babies, assume that having "CLASS" means perfect/fake nails, hair & other parts; swinging an empty $500+ purse, tip-toe-ing in stillettos & wearing a designer logo on their clothes while partying mindlessly like Paris Hilton & living like a Maury guest. Not all of them. ;D

  • @MamaTrina How old are you? You sound younger than a "Generation Xer", no offense intended...

  • @clarkbailey1973 LOL None taken. I'll be 46 in a few weeks, actually. I just observe my own niecesas well as young people who grew up with my daughters... I see some who were fortunate enough to be exposed to culture and class and then those who weren't so fortunate and fell for the lies of society. God bless the child... ;D

  • @MamaTrina You look younger than 46. And that is a compliment...

  • @arlenerogerswilhite T he finest yrs in music are long gone .today we only can have the imitators. Here in Canada we have Molly Johnson & Diana Krall but as good as they maybe who can compare with Billie or Ella or even Abbey Lincoln. The originators lived during a golden era...never to be replaced. Personally i would much rather listen to Sinatra than Michael Buble. Best wishes..

  • she got so much soul in her voice.

    wonderful & the lyrics

    she`s just a Legend

    <3

  • 18 people didn't like it. It's stupid, but I really would like to know WHY?

  • @turpinaime I agree with you 1000%! How could anyone NOT love this ICON?!

  • the tp one for my baby was Harry Edison . The rest of the band were Ben Webster Ts,Jimmy Rowles p, Barney Kassel g, Red Mitchell b Alvin stoller dr. Sorry for my poor english . im italian. by

  • @bascolo50 Thank you for the backing group info. I was trying to recall who the wonderful pianist was..of course it was Jimmy Rowles. I actually got if for guitarist Barney Kessel, who gives us some of his greatest solos on this album, but i was greatly impressed with the warmth of Billies voice on this record. All those artists back then LIVED the life that they sang about. Billie Holiday was for real. Thank you again.

  • Her voice simply grabs hold of listeners and it is so smoothly carried out.... The song is just plain awesome. Of course there will never be another Lady Day! R.I.P.

  • truly my favorite song by Billie ~ rick

  • awesome

  • What an immaculate artistic vision. This is pure divinity. Rest in peace, Lady.

  • love this song!!!

  • @Ladislavmat all its painful and beautiful moments of her life, she brought out the singing emozional so powerful, like no other singer of her time

all its painful and beautiful moments of her life, she brought out the singing emozional so powerful, like no other singer of her time

For me she was the greatest Lady

  • Epic.

  • BEAUTIFUL ARTIST!

  • She breaks my heart. No one like her.

  • she 10 brasil e a elis dos usa fantastica

  • Accompanied by the Count Basie Orchestra with trumpet by Harry "Sweets" Edison. Impeccable.

  • ..I was wondering who was on trumpet..thanks so much for that info...

  • Great song.

  • Heartbreaking Perfection. Whoa...just makes me want to cry.

  • lovely

  • love her

  • the Bette Midler cover on Johnny Carson , is LEGEND. too bad its disappeared from YOu boob

    glad I bought the DVD

  • @TarantinoFan Thanks for the posting. I, too, am a great fan of Frank Sinatra's music, and he certainly did right with this song. He had often credited Miss Billie for the influence she had on his song phrasing, and that influence is evident in much of his work. I think that is a measure of great musical artists. They learn from each other and then make it their own in the end. Miss Billie, Sinatra, Bennett, Miss Sarah, Miss Ella etc.. They were and are our musical treasures.

  • It does not get any better than this. What phrasing. What a blazing talent..

  • very, very nice-thanks

  • i first heard this about 47 yrs ago. i was gobsmacked then, i am now. EXCELLENT. tY YOU SO MUCH

  • Wow.

Listening to Billie is like looking at ice cream.

Thank you for including the lyrics.

  • ♥

  • For many people, she's the beginning and the end of jazz singers.

  • @houseofcharm maybe maybe :) interesting theory. but.. what about Ella? :)

  • Close your eyes and it's a if she is right in the room. When she sings, it is from her heart. Never gets old. It is priceless and timeless.

  • Thank goodness again for You Tube and thanks to dhphotog for putting this up. It's fabulous. ( so is the "Blues Brewin" vid. with Louis Armstrong.)

These early versions exclude her sad descent due to....Life As they say 'It's a bitch and then you die' !!

  • oh yes butfulmuzik, yu're so right..

She was a diamond so pure..

Her phrasing was perfect, her groove was a nectar...

During 44 years she was on earth (1915/1959)...too too short.

Her vulnerability was her force..and her poison.

Now, she's in our hearts for eternity...

Sweet sweet Lady Day, sure yu're in peace now..

    Thanks for all beautiful Lady..

    Love is here to stay..

  • nothing gold can last. the best die young, y yerba mala nunca muere. sad, but true.

  • This is simply the best interpretation of this song, bar none. Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and all the well-knowns used to sit in the clubs where Miss Billie played to listen and learn. Her phrasing was perfection, her interpretation kickass and wonderful, and Lady Day just took no prisoners when she sang that song. Rest in peace, sweet lady, and thank you from the heart for all the precious gifts of song. No one has ever done you better!

  • Bravo! So well said :)

  • @butfulmuzik,

you are right, this and "i'll be seeing you, and "strange fruit" are pieces of gold. love the trumpet, too.

  • @butfulmuzik I could not say it better myself

  • ..I've listened to all three tonight..and while I like Sinatra's 1939 version..I must agree that this version is the capper....her phrasing is phenomenal....

  • @butfulmuzik I agree 100% she owns this song. Everything she sang no matter what time period was golden. She gave her heart and soul in every note and breath she took. The Master Lady Day

  • @butfulmuzik - spot on pal, I never heard Billie sing this now I see how the singers you mentioned picked up the basic form for their own phrasing within her form they added their own heartaches this is as you say a "kickass" rendition, glad I came across this is part of my all time play list now.

  • @butfulmuzik Frank always said he learned it all from Billie Holiday!

  • @butfulmuzik Thank you for a beautiful response to that great lady's music. Her gift lives on and on.....

  • @carol1938ann And thank YOU for your kind words. By the way, I loved your comment about the guitar lessons. I have been playing good guitar and bad piano for more than 46 years, and it was so delightful to know that you are playing and learning guitar. God bless you, and keep on playing, because music is just about the only thing holding this crazy world together these days.

  • @butfulmuzik

i dunno, i know an Ella recording that comes close...

for me, ella gave this track more of a sense of humour, a lightness.

...having said that, billie is the alpha and omega, for me at least! peace x

  • @somewarnvictorysomed I hear you. Miss Ella and Miss Billie were simply the finest. I had the honor of seeing Ella and The Duke perform together in the late 60's and it was a first class evening every second of their performance. Now THESE were the musicians and singers who set the standards in jazz and popular music. No gimmicks, no hype; they had TALENT, and it all speaks for itself. I am so very grateful their gifts live on.

  • Fantastic. Perfect. I love the photos. (Especially the picture of her and Miles Davis at the beginning.)
