I thought once your hair has been rollered set under the hooded dryer that was it (it's supposed to be healthier for the hair). With this technique it's followed up with blow drying and then flat ironed. Hey that's what works for them Negroes and for where they're from (climate). I personally like a good ole fashion hot comb minimum hair grease. For both techniques it's all about skills. And your right about customer service--it means a lot. You can learn how to do DBs too.
DOMINICANS ANCESTORS ARE AFRICAN SOOOOOO BASICALLY WE GOT THE SAME HAIR AND LIKE YOU SAY ITS A TECHNIQUE ITS NOT BLACK OR DOMINICAN SO U NEED TO BE MORE PROFESSIONAL AND MY HAIR IS LONG AND THICK ASS HELL AND I GO TO A DOMINICAN
U made some good points but the same goes for African Hair Braiding Salons as well!!....When i went to their salon they were very loud and speaking in their African language and it was very annoying and rude! Thats why I'm good on going to any salons! I kno how 2 do my own hair!!
Ever since i was younger i have always went to a dominician hair salon im african american not to be bias but dominicians are real good at taking care of black hair my hair is really healthy nd long i just feel more comfortable going to them never had any damage done to my hair by them i just think its just who the person feel more comfortable going wheather its to a dominician or african american stylist.
Hello everyone, I am a black stylist that worked in a Dominican salon. First of all Dominican is a place (Dominican Republic). The technique that they do can be universal like everything else. I learned their technique and use it on my clients . It's a skill not a nationality. And Dominican will tell you they are not black (black as from America) but their ancestors are from Africa like ours, and native Indian from their country. That's why we look alike, and act alike. You better learn to lov
I see some points that were made in this video...but I do disagree with one thing. Race has nothing to do with anything. I believe that it depends on the technique that you mentioned in the video, the education, and putting that education to use. I don't think being Dominican or African American has anything to do with how well you treat others or how well you do hair. It's about personality and applying education to the real world.
You are absolutely correct. I am a Cosmetologist, and I agree we need to be more professional. We need to improve in scheduling, as well as holding our clients accountable for scheduling appointments and keeping their scheduled appointments. I agree with you, we do not have to try to be like them. We just need to improve. One thing is for sure, NOBODY can style like we can. No Not ONE.
my moms a dominican hair stylist and she said you blacks don't know how to do hair and it's TRUE!!!! ten you get tight at us Dominicans. It's not our fault you people don't know how to do your hair! DOMINICANS!!
You don't need to talk bad about someone else to raise up yourself, see how in the very end you adverise your business, I've had over 6 years with dominican taking care of my hair and in just few month a black lady messed up my hair, now I have to repair it going back to dominican style, dominicans do extensions to look better, here black ladies needs to have that done and guess what, they dont want to do relaxer because their hair are gonna get damaged, by the way WE ARE NOT BLACK,
Im a Dominican hairstylist born and raised in NYC (spanish harlem) when clients come in asking for short pixe cuts, weaves, braid or marcell irons I send them down the block to the african american salon.Im really good at what I do but I cant do it all. to each its own! I can apreciated the work and talent of african american hairstylist and I love it too but its just like doctors or any other profession you just pick in what your going to specialize in.Dont be afraid what God has for you is yours
I agree with the comments on the black hair salons. It is time for the beauty schools to add customer service skills to the curriculum. This profession is driven by how you treat your customers, stylist should educate and tell you what treatments is needed, NOT just wash, set, style, you out the door!!. For the past 10 years I refuse to go into salons, my hair is healthy and continues to grow. Black hair does not do wellyou set under a hood dryer and then blow dry, is TO much heat.
The point I want to make is be educated, be professional and be true to yourself. And let the rest take care of itself. Stop being ghetto, unprofessional, and trying to copy cat something you are not.
This video was not meant to be about whether Dominicans can do hair or not. You are either good stylist or a bad one. It doesn't matter your race or culture. The point I want mashed
i feel her, im a hairstylist and i have see the damage on peoples hair it doesnt matter what you are you just need to know what your doing with hair. People have came to me from a stylist of every race with terrible hair plus u need to make sure these people are professionals your blow out may look nice from the front but get up in the middle u might have a patch and not know it. I am a master at making hair soft, silky, bone straight and iam Trinidadian.
what im puertorican and have dominican friends and have the same hair as african american and weve gone to black salons and its horeble baby we know how to do black hair we have no complains and we get alot of african americans doing they hair here and there hair got longer in 6 to 8 months they never saw that in a african american salon. thank u
I don't know what are you talking about.. i have 25 years and have almost all my life treating my hair with "the dominican style" .. and my hair cannot be more healthy. You should better take care of YOUR business.. You are talking about professionalism and you are not being professional AT ALL ;) Just saying.
i went to a salon today and i used a hair mayonaise treatment by organic root stimulator and it helped my low breakage at the front of my hair, but it has grown but, the heat is rediculous.
I went to a Dominican salon for picture day, and my graduation. For picture day, it was my first time EVER going to a salon and it was PACKED. There were mad heads in that salon and I was thinking, "DAMN, I'M GONNA BE HERE ALL DAY!!" . Before I could sit down in the waiting room (well, area. they have a small space and work magic with it!), someone was pointing me to a sink. My long, thick ass hair was done in an hour. And their products were all natural and just superb! My hair was sparkling!
Sad to say she's right...Most African American Salons are ran like they are straight out of Big Mama's kitchen..Answering phones, talking loud, cursing, leaving to go pick up your kids, eating food and smacking, crackhead drama from the outside, everyone gathered around watching soaps, and basketball wives, You're in there ALL DAY..There's no professionalism. We operate a Salon in a real hood way.
Sad really sad....African American stylists arent known for providing the healthiest hair anyway If t your bias allegations were true most black women walk around with healthy. I am dominican of african decent and my hair is mad healthy. Gossip in the dominican salon....wow....the scribes are throwing rocks at mary magdalene? Black hair stylists can be profesional and so can Dominicans too I think this post is really stupid. Dominicans know how to do hair black hair cause we black
I am not a stylist but I have been able to take better care of my hair than ALL of the african-american stylists I've been to. Many times I have walked out of an african-american salon feeling like crap because my hair looked like crap and the stylist made me feel like crap. I have vowed to NEVER walk into another african-american salon for as long as I live! And to top it off most african-american stylists ARE RUDE! Who wants to be around negativity? I know I don't.
@MsNessa1985 wow i am sorry that you had such horrible experiences but the truly sad part is that I am not that surprised. The one thing I pride myself in as a stylist is great customer service. I know how I want to be treated so therefore I treat everyone the same way I want my mother, sister, daughter etc to be treated.
@TremendousTresses i know exactly what you are saying i am a black american hair stylist... and proud to be. I love doing hair and making my clients feel like they are the only one in the salon.I am the best stylish but i strive on customer service!!!!!! That is the key to winning your customers. ex. My cell phone is off while working on my clients, I educate all of them about their hair, and my personal business stays HOME!!!!! as a result they pay and tip WELL. BE BLESS!
You are sooooo wrong, it is true that a lot of dominican are gossip ladies, but have we tought about what asians ladies says at the nails place? because those are always talking and no one know what they say, but nobody cares, to make hair doesnt have to be hot or rough but not pain not gain in some cases, i am rather to be hot once in a while and hae a nice hair...you're just threated by real dominican stylist, NOT dominican-americans, see how you finally say: make your appt and come and see me

I am an AA stylist and I agree with this video to a certain extent. It is true that some AA stylist and salons are unprofessional and that needs to change! I have also had clients that left me to go to a Dominican stylist because it was less expensive, only to come back because they were losing their hair due to excessive heat. I don't care if people leave me to go with another stylist no matter what nationality. There are enough clients for everybody to make money and I have my loyal clients.
I love how Dominicans do hair. Its not about them being cheaper, cause whats the use of supporting a service thats not good or that you do not like the outcome of? i say people should stick with what they like! its a matter of preference..........Not everybody likes a Dominican salon, just like not everyone likes a black salon! So what! The big deal with this is........? Someone help me out please! smh
I think that this lady covered all that is right and wrong with both black and dominican stylists. Though she should not have emphasized dominicans making black people's hair fall out, she does, make a valid point about dominican's using excessive heat. She also made a valid point about black stylists spending more time gossiping than doing hair. All in all she was being honest.
Well I go the the Dominician and my Hair is Very Healthy and Thick I hate when People say that and then dont take care of that Hair ..I went to my Hair Stylest for 8 Years before I decided to Leave her she became Lazy and slow and I would get in there at 10:00 am and not leave until 3pm that unacceptable and then she wants to charge $65.00 for a wash and curl Hell no its $27 dollars at the Domincian Shop and Lets be Clear my hair has not Fallen out you can see a Pick on my Page ...
i have had a personal experience with the domincan salon and i feel as though they have no customer serivce, they only kno one certain style and in the end your hair may look nice but your scalp is left dry and flaky. nothing professional at all very rude and unprofessional. i agree with everything your saying
Envy is not good. serch for God in depths of your heart. We all egual. I'am dominicana and I do not like your comment. It is not good to talk about other people. LOl FROM DR.
@CocoYogenFruz you're right they are black too. I think she is right though the lack of professionalism in many African American shops is what steers me away. Too many times I show up and people say oh so and so isn't here right now - you can text her. I don't mind gossip, that's the fun of a shop. My priority is professionalism and that to me means being able to go in and get my hair done without a hassle of having to "text" a stylist to see when they are free
welll 1st of all i dont know wat kind o f clients u have ...2nd of all u hating on us the dominicans .. im very offended in how u can sit there and say that u get clients complain the we mess there hair up .. wen is mostly the other way around.. but i really think is that ya need 2 worry about ur own business and us take care of our business ... cuz i know i can blowdry some great hair and style it tooooooooo
welll 1st of all i dont know wat kind o f clients u have ...2nd of all u hating on us the dominicans .. im very offended in how u can sit there and say that u get clients complain the we mess there hair up .. wen is mostly the other way around.. but i really think is that ya need 2 worry about ur own business and us take care of our business
I do think it's hating. She is just giving advice to those in her industry to step it up. No one is whining we're just realizing the truth and admitting it. So Dominicans keep doing your thing and we'll keep doing ours.
I love Dominican salons and contrare to what you are saying it has nothing to do with price and everything to do with skill. I leave with bouncy , beautiful shiny hair. Not to mention my hair is the longest it has ever been. I have been going to Dominicans for 0ver 15 years. Please bear in mind hair textures cross racial boundaries. There are many Dominicans with kinky afro textured hair so they are no strangers to this hair type. I actually pay 75.00 for a relaxer and 35 for a wash and set.
i like natural hair anyways and black women of all nationality should try to wear their hair natural for a change . bring back the natural look. on the other hand the Dominicans are doing hair thats all, not purposely trying to appeal to AA. they are just doing black hair because they are also black of course people reserve the right to go to whom ever does their hair the best . plain and simple , last thing i have yet to see somebody Dominican make a video trashing AA hair salons or Technics
Dominicans do hair AMAZING. But their SERVICE and professionalism SUCKS. They are really rude. They miss appointments, they're late for their appointments, they make faces, dont make you feel welcome. AND to top if off. If it looks like you have money, they'll charge you MORE!!!! But that Louis Vuitton purse away girls!!!!
It's obvious she has her own bias which is completely understandable. I think they should intergrate the techniques. Black hair stylists and the techinques used obviously have flaws. it's not only because of the atmosphere. the reasons dominicans are getting a lot of clientes is because 1. Blowdrying is optional. 2. Flat ironing is optional.
I am the daughter of a Dominican stylist, 2 of my mother's sisters are also Dominican stylists, we all have kinky 4b/c type hair so they obviously know how to work with that kind of hair or just afro texture in general. I have never had any issues with my hair following my family's technique and I think that the whole "heat" thing is optional.
So let met get this straight, Dominican women are doing a better job at doing african american hair and instead of afro-americans doing a better job they instead resort to whining about it. Black women should be able to go to whatever hairstylist they want and if these women are getting better service and product at a dominican salon versus a black one then so be it. Black businesses cannot whine about lack of oppurtunity but then get pissed at someone who built a better mouse trap.
Yes everyone definately has their niche...I go to an african if I want braids.. I go to an Asian if I was acrylics and I go to a Black American if I want my hair styled (updo..color etc) and I would go to a Dominican if I want "flowy" hair..But most black women have perms and want flowy hair... and it happens that the Dominicans expects at doing thatit..But if I want my hair styled I go to a Black salon
Consider this, about 95% of Dominicans are mixed with Taino Indian, African roots, and Spanish. Additionally, about 35% of Dominicans are black Dominicans. Who do you think does the hair for these women? Dominican stylists!!Yes, right off the boat Dominican women know how to work on African-American women hair.
Those Dominican women with African blood is no different than African-American blood. So guess what, the hair is also the same. Dominican women are so obsessed with their hair that by the time they are tweens, they know how to blow it on their own.
Trust me, I grew up with these women around me. You claim that their techniques "break" their hair due to extreme heat but remember, it's their technique and they have been doing it just as long as African-American stylists. If you want to gain back those lost customers, I suggest that you learn from your competitor. You are not "conforming" when you adapt someone else's technique
I am a Dominican guy and I think this is a great video which serves a great purpose. But I would like to add my 2 cents since the author of this video seems to want to point out that Dominicans are basically stealing African-American business salon away and that the techniques Dominicans use would cause "breakage" to black women hair. It's no coincidence that ALL Dominican women are almost experts at doing hair.
DR Salon is $30 cheaper, You DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR 5 HOURS, I am not put under the dryer for 2 HOURS because stylist was late or running behind, eating lunch, picking her children, talking on the phone !?!?!?, They know how to relax, cut, color, and style, I am out within 2 to 3 hours, They wash, condition, set, blow the roots ( instead of a full blow out) and wrap or leave drop curls; all for under $25 if you have should length hair, A touch up including, is like $55 using AFFIRM.
I agree with you to an extent but its not only the price and professionalism because I go to black salon when I need a relaxer and I am treated just fine. I think its the products as well, at the DR salon they use lighter weight products. At the black salon it seems to always happen, the hair feels weighed down, coated and doesn't move as much. I think besides the price and professionalism thats another issue black salon's should look into, products.
Thank you for this video, I'm really glad you made this. Your take on the situation is very refreshing. I hope that people listen to this message and do what THEY need to do to keep their clients. I've been to both types of salons and I like both - but you hit the nail on the head when you spoke about professionalism. I cant tell you how many times my African-American stylist kept me waiting because she had to get her kids or her car broke down. Come on, now.
Don't Conform Reform~~ I love it. Great video. You said a mouthful when you spoke on attitude. I had a woman come to me simply because of how she was treated in a local salon. The ownder didn't speak to her when she walked in the salon for her appointment. Something as simple as " Hi how are you we are running behind but will be with you in a moment (smile)." The lady was at the shop from 10 in the morning until 10 at night because they were overbooked! We have to do better. Great video!
I thought once your hair has been rollered set under the hooded dryer that was it (it's supposed to be healthier for the hair). But.....most Dominicans are racially black. They are afro latino. They have the same texture we do more often than not.....they know black hair.
Marcel irons are no better that the blow dry. And its way more than a 10 dollar difference. Black salons can be extremely expensive.
I grew up in the Dominican salons and my hair is fine.

She also made a valid point about black stylists spending more time gossiping than doing hair. All in all she was being honest.

i have had a personal experience with the domincan salon and i feel as though they have no customer serivce, they only kno one certain style and in the end your hair may look nice but your scalp is left dry and flaky. nothing professional at all very rude and unprofessional. i agree with everything your saying

Dominican stylists!!Yes, right off the boat Dominican women know how to work on African-American women hair.
bloodreaper7 1 year ago
Those Dominican women with African blood is no different than African-American blood. So guess what, the hair is also the same. Dominican women are so obsessed with their hair that by the time they are tweens, they know how to blow it on their own.
bloodreaper7 1 year ago
Trust me, I grew up with these women around me. You claim that their techniques "break" their hair due to extreme heat but remember, it's their technique and they have been doing it just as long as African-American stylists. If you want to gain back those lost customers, I suggest that you learn from your competitor. You are not "conforming" when you adapt someone else's technique
bloodreaper7 1 year ago
I am a Dominican guy and I think this is a great video which serves a great purpose. But I would like to add my 2 cents since the author of this video seems to want to point out that Dominicans are basically stealing African-American business salon away and that the techniques Dominicans use would cause "breakage" to black women hair. It's no coincidence that ALL Dominican women are almost experts at doing hair.

DR Salon is $30 cheaper, You DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT FOR 5 HOURS, I am not put under the dryer for 2 HOURS because stylist was late or running behind, eating lunch, picking her children, talking on the phone !?!?!?, They know how to relax, cut, color, and style, I am out within 2 to 3 hours, They wash, condition, set, blow the roots ( instead of a full blow out) and wrap or leave drop curls; all for under $25 if you have should length hair, A touch up including, is like $55 using AFFIRM.
pinkbutafly 1 year ago

PREACH! More professionalism less attitude. Also, they can work for less with all that drug money laundering
