What you say is true - but Bush knew Rather like a book. He knew Rather would pull something like this - that's why he wanted this interview and why he insisted it be live. This interview greatly benefited him, as people had been trying to portray him as not tough enough - this helped put an end to that - especially in the moments between 4:00 and 4:20.

Dan Rather was fired in disgrace. He tried to take down the president using dirty and wrong journalistic practices. He presented something as truth when it was totally falsified. He got what he deserved.

Bush was also very tough on Dole in the New Hampshire primary, which caused Dole's dark side to later show through when he complained that Bush was "lying about my [Dole's] record."
