Christanity is in india dates back to AD 52....In Kerala there are 7 and half churches build by ST THomas...Christians in Kerala are called SYRIAN Christian(Orthodox and Jacobite). I am proud to be an Syrian christian.... I am a Syrian Orthodox guy. Syrian christians are called so because all the religious books are written in syriac only.
Definitely an Orthodox wedding of Indian Malayalis. But this is not the way it is in Kerala. Here the women cover their heads inside church.
Wedding inside the Church is serious as it is a sacrament. God, represented by the priest blesses the couple. So people stand in prayer. The songs recall the way God blessed Adam& Eve, Abraham & Sarah, Issac & Rebeka, Jacob Rahel and invite His blessings on the couple . It is beautiful. Reception outside is the time for partying.God
Syrian (Syriac) Orthodox church of India and Syriac Orthodox of Antioch are united, the Syrian Orthodox Church of Indiat is accultured in an indian context ad and the Antiochian in an middle eastern context.
They have links with armenians, copts and ethiopian churchs.
Usually in Kerala they speak malayalam as in Syria they speak arabic but the Syriac language remains in the liturgy always spoken in Tour Abdin, Al Qamishli (Syria).
this is a pseudo syrian christian marriage ceremony. The first christians in kerala were jews and the locals converted by St.Thomas. Then during the 4th and 8th century, syrian christian people migrated from the middle east. Most of the syrian christian cultural was diluted by the Roman Catholics who came with the portuguese
Jezus Christ was also a jew. And the jews are descendants from the Arameans. The 72 Aramean families who migrated from the Middle-East were already converted to Christianism before reaching India.
I am not a member of the church. I'm just the videographer. The name of the church, as listed on the program, is "Syrian Orthodox Church in India". Why "in" and not "of" remains a mystery to me this very day.
OK. Here is your answer from a Syrian Christian. Syrian Christians are the descendants of the people in Kerala (which is at the southern most tip of India) converted to Christianity by St Thomas between 45 - 52 AD. They were called Nazranis (believed to be originated from the word Nazarene (denoting disciples of Jesus from Nazreth). The language used in the churches was Syriac which is a form of Aramic (the language used by Jesus's disciples).
The term Syrian in the church name actually refers to the language as well as a way to distinguish them from the Nazranis forcibly converted to Catholicism by the Portugese in 14 th century AD and so has nothing to do with the country of Syria. Another factor might be that the Patriarch of Antioch(in Syria one of the ancient churches) supported the people in opposing the Portugese and going back to their traditional Christianity. Any way history is too long for you tube. Google it !
Enya was just for the highlights. The actual ceremony had all the right traditional music, and lots of it. The full ceremony was well over an hour long.
Such a wedding with cultural versatility cannot happen in India. Am a syrian christian, hailing from Kerala, India. Syrian Chritian wedding dont appear so. May be happened is west (a high probability).
Syrians came to india in 1100s and they were few and objected the caste system in Kerala and what followed by a mass conversion of upper keralites to christianity in central part, the same exploitation of lower class by Brahmins.
