@CCZilla Oh cuz i just bought this along with Mothra and H-Man and I liked The mysterians alot and I never knew that there was a sequel for mysterians.
You just KNOW Stanley Kubrick and George Lucas watched this one, too, and loved it as much as we do! Maybe the G-Fest will show a decent SCOPE print some day... where else could we see it on the Big Screen?
I think Toho should've made like their response to Star Wars, not like this or War in Space but a sci-fi film that takes place in the future like Star Wars. I'm sure if such a film were made it would be panned by critics but gain a massive cult following by Toho fans like us :)
oh no bad idea i was thinking wat if TOHO got the rights to make a HULK movie they would kill the HULK *shoots self in head for thinking of such a thing* may god have mercy on ur soul
@TravaUser Man, if I understood what you said, then I can safely say that if all "full grown childs" like you have terrible grammar...then I'd much rather stay a baby. :)
Star Wars was definitely partially inspired by this film. Interestingly enough, not too long after Star Wars came out in Japan, the studio that made this film made a Star Wars knockoff called The War In Space, which is a loose continuation of this. Unfortunately, The War In Space was awful and the film was not very successful.
@RocStarr913 War in Space is more of a sequel to Atragon than this. They've got a new Atragon (Goten instead of Gotengo) that can now FLY IN SPACE!
I like how the only part other than the title card I can read says "from the makers of (or whatever) Godzilla, Rodan, and The Mysterians!" So Varan wasn't very well liked I assume.
@egdeltur666 Yep, Varan wasn't very successful, even in Japan. I think it got a better reception in America, of which the film was initially made exclusively for in the first place. If you look at the trailer for Varan, it also says "from the makers of Godzilla, Rodan, and The Mysterians!" as well.
What memories this resurrects! In 1960, I sat in a theater filled with screaming American Baby Boom children like myself, shooting imaginary antiaircraft guns at onscreen flying saucers while our "Greatest Generation" parents marveled at the fact that less than twenty years previously they and the Japanese fought eachother in real life....
I hope Sony kicks the Box Set in high gear. This and H-Man are some of Ishiro Honda's best films, and Mothra is a fantastic kaiju film. Rebirth of Mothra 3 just looks good, but I doubt the story will be as nostalgic or interesting as the others. Either way, Sony! PLease hurry!
Where did you find this!? I've been trying to find the trailer to this movie for a long time! Either way, this is one of my favorite movies and it deserves a proper release in WIDESCREEN. The only way you can get it now is via bootleg ebay.
This trailer is available on the Japanese DVD release. Hopefully, we'll see a US release of the film on DVD from TriStar/Columbia Home Video, since Sony owns the rights to this, THE H-MAN (1958) and MOTHRA (1961).
I'm curious was this better than or worse than the mysterians?
45Yankeeclipper 9 months ago
@45Yankeeclipper In my opinion, I thought it was worse. I find it a LOT less exciting until the climax.

Though I saw the American version, this was one of my biggest treats as a child in the early 1960s!

The gentleman is obviously a superb orator and has, I predict, a great career ahead of him as Sarah Palin's pick for secretary of education.

I love this movie! It needs a US release in the US!

Sony is currently working on a DVD box-set for release in the USA in 2009 which includes this, The H-Man, Mothra, and Rebirth of Mothra 3.
Shokara 3 years ago
Thank the Maker!!! That's the best news I've heard in a while. I wonder if it will include the Japanese versions?

It will. The Japanese versions will be complete and uncut too.
