@JellyChang The problem here is that your sensei is not wrong but luca is also right, katas and kumite have been changing by the pass of the years so sometimes there are some styles that change from they original version of tradicional karate-do, but he is good as competitor, one of the best if i might say. Japan tradicional karate and Competition karate are always changing!
I know is changing but the basic never deviate as much from the traditional LOL~ Indeed, even look at his feet, you can tell that he does not rotate at the heel of the feet which you are suppose to and Lucas rotate using the toes of his feet :( Also, one of his Unsu that he did, he did not block fully~ Michael Milon is a much better karate ka then him~
i think diaz is slight unconfortable with chatanyara this time.i think he didnt concentrate in his stances. i think cat stance niffin is not exact. lucas was amazing. he rocked in chinto.
LOL~ As what I heard from my sensi, which is a 8th dan from Japan, he said that Luca is no that good actually. Pay attention to his feet, he always lift his heel up, which you are not suppose to :( Also, the yoko geri keage suppose to be chudan but he did it as jodan and but his back fist strike was chudan where suppose to be jodan to the tempo :(
@JellyChang i think you are some other style from goju ryu. lucas is goju . iam a shito ryu style.but i think goju usually bend their back leg and then kick higher than the other styles dear. so i think that is their rule. what you think ?????
I actually practice shotokan. Lucas is obviously shotokan, the kata that he is doing is called gankaku. Goju does not have gankaku and considering it does not have the "typical starting position as goju.
@TheJonathanjono You saw something different than what I saw and anything posted in youtube is subject to an honest and constructive criticism. You are entitled to your own opinion as I'm entitled to mine. If you think Antonio was better than Luca, so be it. But I have a different opinion than you do. The judges' decisions are final. You don't need to say nasty words to reply to anybody's comment here. It just show how low-level headed you are.
surely the empi's @ 1..05 has to be wrong....? the hand cannot fold into the arm, the elbow has to goes towards the hand ...? and when you have 2 karateka of this ability little points like this decides who wins and who loses.
Yes.... now look at the results (4-1) of resently US Open 2009... Díaz by far is Better...much more kime and you can see this...Valdesi is good and have a long history...but Diaz is much better...
I watched this live at the Budokan in Tokyo. was very close between the two of them. It could of gone anyway. Both were super. I think Valdesi's kicks pushed through.
It's interesting how tournament standards have changed over the last 30 years. If you look at the old footage of guys like Minakami and Limcaco, the cat stance was a lot lower and shiko dachi was bent 90 degrees at the knee with legs spread nearly 180 degrees, forming a perfect box.
4:30 before he gets on his knee, he's practically losing his balance, and it shows. Antonio had wayyy more control in his techniques, and a better balance. Sorry Luca, but in this case, Antonio should have won. =/ Very nice of you to post this video though! :)
Diaz lose his balance in several stances, valdesi at 1, but valdesi put more force and explotion in his kata, but he was very close to lose his balance in the last yoko geri, just before the dratf and the last yoko geri.
in this case Valdesi was upset for something I don't know maybe too much excited cause he was in Japan or not so much good body form...I seen something wrong in his positions...
its stupid over here because americans do not get funded.. in places like venezuela, they get paid if they bring back a medal, over here u get a pat on the back....
wow i used to do this back in grade 7 when i got my blackbelt and then i quit. 5 years later i realize how gay it really was. I can't believe people waste their time doing this shit.
Its of much use. Do you not see the explosiveness, the body discipline, and precision. Also Karate kata exist of a library of techniques. each movement has close to 3-5 explinatins/ applications/ techniques to them. Studying karate is learning the kata then breaking down each technique. it is where all the self defense, technical philosophies, and artform lay.
Clearly you have never trained true karate in which there is not just kicking and punching. Kata techniques contain within them many more rounded techniques and even grappling. And ultimately it is a way of meditating and uniting the mind, body and spirit.
i learned all of the katas except for a couple of the most advanced ones (ex; kururunfa i havent memorized). "True" karate teaches SELF DEFENSE, and the "meditating and uniting" one receives is only a secondary or tertiary aspect and is a personal experience. I dont wish to gain this from "true karate" if this "true karate" isnt about self defense.
His hands are very sharp. But his stances are beyond appalling. He is almost standing up every time. With no stance, all techniques lose their effectiveness. You could push him over at any time. His neko-ashi dachi does not protect the groin and is way too high. His shiko-dachi would have no take-down defense capability and would not add strength to any strike. His zenkutsu-dachi strikes would be completely useless with that stance. 1/10.
only his stances in nippaipo and Annan are ok, so i can understand he won with those kata. As Gogen Yamaguchi wrote, "when stance wrong, everything wrong! If you are not in right stance you are not doing kata, only doing movements!" WKF judges however not judging on probable effectiveness, mostly judging presentation and sharpness (which he has). His kata is better than mine. But i feel sorry for those kata players who have great kata (and effectiveness because they have great stances).
Unfortunately i agree with you his stances are very weak especially his neko ashi dachi. I think that all of the peaple who admire him should see this comments as a way for him to look the mistakes he has and learn from them... I think he is very good but he needs to be even better.
I think the angle of the camera partly causes our bad view of his neko ashi dachi but I must aggree that many times his stances are very high. Which shows mostly in his neko ashi dachi and his shiko dachi.
yes he is good, but number 2 in the world? What message does this send to kids? That stances don't count as long as you're fast. If a stance is bad, the technique is weak. he is very very fast, but i think we can all agree, when we shorten and raise our stances, its much easier to move faster. Others do correct stances and as such, move slightly slower, then get punished for doing it right. he has always competed this way & refuses to change because judges continue to reward him for it.

luca...gana =)
disculpen..pero soy shotokan =)
aburaamu 3 years ago

tal vez sea FSKA

purokata 3 years ago 2
4:30 before he gets on his knee, he's practically losing his balance, and it shows. Antonio had wayyy more control in his techniques, and a better balance. Sorry Luca, but in this case, Antonio should have won. =/ Very nice of you to post this video though! :)
Saltkringlan101 3 years ago
Diaz lose his balance in several stances, valdesi at 1, but valdesi put more force and explotion in his kata, but he was very close to lose his balance in the last yoko geri, just before the dratf and the last yoko geri.

first, milon is the best !!:)
second, in this fight valdesi had more power but i thinkg diaz made kata better

wow that was amazing the other guy was a little better

in this case Valdesi was upset for something I don't know maybe too much excited cause he was in Japan or not so much good body form...I seen something wrong in his positions...

Luca Valdesi is my Idol in KATA.. especially when he play Gankaku
hardyantz 3 years ago
wrabanal27 3 years ago
Antonio, excelente...
empi24 3 years ago

of what use is this to you in real life?
jproducts 3 years ago
Its of much use. Do you not see the explosiveness, the body discipline, and precision. Also Karate kata exist of a library of techniques. each movement has close to 3-5 explinatins/ applications/ techniques to them. Studying karate is learning the kata then breaking down each technique. it is where all the self defense, technical philosophies, and artform lay.
Naldo411 3 years ago 3
Clearly you have never trained true karate in which there is not just kicking and punching. Kata techniques contain within them many more rounded techniques and even grappling. And ultimately it is a way of meditating and uniting the mind, body and spirit.
Naldo411 3 years ago
i learned all of the katas except for a couple of the most advanced ones (ex; kururunfa i havent memorized). "True" karate teaches SELF DEFENSE, and the "meditating and uniting" one receives is only a secondary or tertiary aspect and is a personal experience. I dont wish to gain this from "true karate" if this "true karate" isnt about self defense.

How did Diaz get to the final?
His hands are very sharp. But his stances are beyond appalling. He is almost standing up every time. With no stance, all techniques lose their effectiveness. You could push him over at any time. His neko-ashi dachi does not protect the groin and is way too high. His shiko-dachi would have no take-down defense capability and would not add strength to any strike. His zenkutsu-dachi strikes would be completely useless with that stance. 1/10.
toanthony 3 years ago
Diaz get the FINAL 5-0 all matches.... and you say all this?.... Oss! Tnx by your comment!
KarateMiramar 3 years ago
only his stances in nippaipo and Annan are ok, so i can understand he won with those kata. As Gogen Yamaguchi wrote, "when stance wrong, everything wrong! If you are not in right stance you are not doing kata, only doing movements!" WKF judges however not judging on probable effectiveness, mostly judging presentation and sharpness (which he has). His kata is better than mine. But i feel sorry for those kata players who have great kata (and effectiveness because they have great stances).
toanthony 3 years ago
Unfortunately i agree with you his stances are very weak especially his neko ashi dachi. I think that all of the peaple who admire him should see this comments as a way for him to look the mistakes he has and learn from them... I think he is very good but he needs to be even better.
DELINFIERNOALATIERRA 3 years ago
I think the angle of the camera partly causes our bad view of his neko ashi dachi but I must aggree that many times his stances are very high. Which shows mostly in his neko ashi dachi and his shiko dachi.
aiyer1989 3 years ago
yes he is good, but number 2 in the world? What message does this send to kids? That stances don't count as long as you're fast. If a stance is bad, the technique is weak. he is very very fast, but i think we can all agree, when we shorten and raise our stances, its much easier to move faster. Others do correct stances and as such, move slightly slower, then get punished for doing it right. he has always competed this way & refuses to change because judges continue to reward him for it.
