  • The paint on the lanterns is probably not water based... using a spray bomb paint (spray can) would work too!

  • I think you may need to lightly sand the gloss off the lanterns to provide a 'tooth' for the gesso /primer to adhere to. But, here's to skipping steps! LOL! It makes it more unique! :)
