  • Hi, you're tank isn't big enough for all those. A Knifefish can grow very large, way too big for that tank. The other fish should be ok.

  • Beautiful fish. I just set up my 35g tank and i wanna put in one of these, along with a black ghost knifefish, a ropefish, as well as the betta thats already in there, is that adviseable?

  • Years ago I had a couple Elephant nose fish I would feed by hand.. I would pet them too....blue Botias with orange fins actually ate them and they disappeared overnight.

  • It would be fine with a black ghost I am sure but a Tire Track eel does grow pretty large. I don't think you should mix them.

  • excuse me... excuse me... EXCUSE ME!

Can it live with a tiretrack eel and black ghost? Nice variety

  • In theory it should be fine. You just need to remember that they both emit weak electrical signals to locate their food but I don't think it would be an issue. Certainly I have seen them as tankmates before.

  • would an elephant nose go with a black ghost knife?

  • Cool! Looks like a little dolphin.

  • It really depends on their living conditions but they are quite long lived, some years.

  • Aaaawwww!!! How cute!

  • whats the life span i want one really bad now

  • Yes it will eat brine shrimp, mysis, black mosquito larva, bloodworms. Anything meaty and small. Hope this helps.

  • hi i just got an elephant nose today and i was just wondering will it work if i feed it live brime shrimps? u know those sea monkeys? would appreciate ur feedback. :)

  • they act more like animal and less like fish .i have two of those and they really have a different personality than any other fish of my tank though my discus is more friendly with me than my elp

  • hello.

catfish and elephant nose fish both need to be kept on sand. It damages their bristles (catfish) and the elephant fishes nose!

  • They are Blue Tetra, very pretty things especially if you have a blue light in your tank.

  • What species of tetra do you have in there?

  • When you say 1g per inch, do you mean 1 gallon per inch of fish? Obviously this would not work. Perhaps 10 gallons per inch might be a better idea.

  • would 1g per inch work for this fish and arent they really hard to look after

  • Hi there, yes 200 litres would be fine. Good filtration, sandy substrate, lots of hiding places, plants, etc. and you should be fine. They grow to 6 or 7 inches depending on the sub-species. Give them a little while to settle down in a tank with the lights off. Start feeding gently with bloodworm. Frozen is fine if you defrost thoroughly first in a cup of room temperature water, then strain before feeding. Hope this helps.

  • Any idea how big they gro? im getting a 200 ltr aquarium and im wondering if it will be acceptable

and will it be alright with tiger barbs?

  • Not much actually, probably get one for about £15, that's like $25.

  • Thats cool ass shit!! How much do they cost? I'm very interested

  • As long as your water is good., these guys need REALLY good water, and the temperature is right, about 27C then you should be fine. He can live for days without feeding but obviously it would be nice if you saw him doing that. Bear in mind also that these fish are quite nocturnal and he may well be eating while you are asleep.

  • @rolfevans Hey there, I thought I would update, My elephant nose fish was eating today, he still in hiding but at least I know he's eating the blood worms.

Thanks for your support, and I was just wondering if you have a tutorial video on blood worms and hand feeding? That would be really helpful!

  • When they first go into a tank they will be a little secretive, actually most fish are. Are you feeding live bloodworm? Thawed frozen bloodworm is ok once he has settled down. Could take a little while so don't worry too much. As long as your water is good and the temperature is ok then he should be fine. Do you have plenty of plants and a sand substrate?

  • @rolfevans No, I'm feeding thawed blood worm. I dont know where to find live blood worm. I have loads of plants, and I have a large mix of small stone and fine gravel (basically sand) as substrate. The elephant nose has actually gone to the otherside of the tank now and is still in hiding. I put in some more blood worm, and it hasnt actually responded. It's been around 3 days since I have gotten him.

How long do they usually hide for by the way? I'm rather worried for the elephant nose.

  • Hey, im not sure if you remember me, it's been a month and I have got an elephant nose fish. Its been bout 32 hours, he's found a hiding place and doesnt seem to be responding to bloodworms i place down.

What was your elephant nose like when you got him? and how long did it take before it was confident enough to go out of hiding?

Also, my water quality is great and my fish is - 5 Guppies, 5 Lamp eyes, 2 clown loaches, and my elephant nose.

    Got any advice aswell?

  • I try to keep the tank at around 26 degrees. Right now it's quite warm and the temperature goes up a little. He is fine between 25 and 30. If it gets too hot I float frozen water bottles and keep the lights off for longer.

  • Wow, he's neat, didn't realize they were a freshwater species. Water temp please?

  • The extension or "nose" is actually a protruding bottom lip. The mouth is small and located immediately above the trunk like feature. They use the trunk to feel around in sand or gravel and flip the food up into the mouth. The "trunk" is VERY sensitive and quite easilly damaged. This would usually result in the fish being unable to feed properly and so would die. Hope this helps.

  • how do they eat??

do they eat through their long nose?

  • How do they eat through such a small mouth?

  • Well they can be quite reclusive fish and so will look for little hiding places. Maybe they couldn't get out of your little castle once they got in. Always better to have some sort of ledge or cave with an opening at both ends.

  • My main filter, the external one is a Fluval 205, about £70 on eBay. I have a smaller Fluval internal and another filter I don't know the name. Both about £30 each. Hope that helps.

  • Well a 200 litre is big enough but to give it just three days to settle will ensure your fish will not live. You will need GOOD filtration. I have 2 in tank and one external. You need a sandy substrate and it should be well planted. Use RO water for changes and do this 10% per week. Retain the old tank water for your filter cleaning. These filters and the tank must mature for ONE MONTH before you consider adding an elephant nose. Other fish, tetra or corys can be added after three weeks.

  • @rolfevans Hi, thanks for reply, what filters do you have and how much? Cheers!

  • lovely elephant nose, shame about the aggressive sailfin, i had one like that too, seems to be feeding time where they become aggressive

  • its cute

  • That's probably too much. Do you use RO water? I always use RO water because the water that comes from the tap here is very high in Nitrate. I do about a 10% water change every week. I have two internal filters and a Fluval 205 external. It's a lot of filtration for that tank, probably overkill, but better safe than sorry. I clean the filter medium in old tank water during a water change and I clean each filter about once a month. Hope this helps.

  • @rolfevans Hey, I'm about to get a 200 litre tank. I'm planning to let it run for three days and then get 1 elephant nose fish, is this good enough?

My local pet store says I should only get 5 fish a week, but can I get that fish and 4 more? What did you do?

    Cheers!

  • The elephant nose is a very active feeder. It doesn't hang around the bottom and it is hardly ever still.

  • @rolfevans how clean do you keep your tank? like how often do you do water changes and what percent of a water change do you do? i do like a 20% every 10 days

  • Is the elephant nose active or lazy? I want one but do not want another lazy bottom dweller

  • epic commentation

  • No I don't think so. My tank is 110 litres which is just over 20 gallons which is about the minimum an elephant noce would need I think.

  • It's such a cool fish! Would it do alright in a ten gallon?

  • He's about full grown I think, maybe 6 to 7 inches. Certainly not aggresive though he does tend to prod everything.

  • hi thanks for the upload cool fish what size do they grow to and are they friendly or aggresive .

i have a 150 litre tank with baby chilchid 3 inch and growing daily lol

    and gouramis just now .

  • Any good aquarium should be able to get one of these fish for you. Good luck.

  • where do you get these

  • @suburbanshicken They'll occasionally have them in locally owned pet stores. I've never seen them in any of the big name stores like PetSupermarket or PetCo. But there are some websites that'll ship them out to you. You'll have to pay like $25 just for shipping but they are really cool fish.

  • It looked like Pete was cuddling her hand like a cat.

  • It's 110 litres, almost 4 feet across.

  • how big is you tank?

  • Right, thanks

  • They really don't need training, they are very smart. Make sure you are feeding bloodworm (red mosquito larva). Take a few in your fingers and just put your hand in the water. If he doesn't come straight away then release the few bloodworm and try again. He will quickly begin to associate your hand with feeding time. Please make sure your hand is well washed and rinsed of any soap. It must be really clean.

  • Hello I have an elephant nose and I really want to hand feed him, how did you train him to do it?

  • No, they don't eat flakes. You need to feed them bloodworms (or any kind of mosquito larvae) Nothing else will do and if they don't get that they won't live. Cheers.

  • hi i have a question!

plzzzz i really need to know!

k yesterday i brought 2 Elephant nose fishes, which are exactly like urs!

k i was told by the lady in Pet store that u can feed thm with flakes!

but whn i fed thm, all my other fishes were eating.

but thy dont seem to notice it and whn thy did i didnt see thm eating thm thm flakes!

is it right? thy dont eat flakes?

  • nice video

  • you guys r cool!

  • Yes they are a lovely and very weird looking fish. We have had him about a year now.

  • He is beautiful,We have 1 and he is a little bigger than that and also just as friendly,,They are the most prehistoric looking fish..They are beautiful. How long have you had him?

  • Yes, same here. but make sure the bloodworms are well thawed in cold water and then strain the water off, don't just tip it all into your tank or the phosphate level will go through the roof. These fish are very smart, they have excellent smell and sight and they find food by emitting an electrical pulse from the tail. If you hold the bloodworms, in very clean fingers, then he will find them for sure. Just be patient and wait for him to find them.

  • Beautiful fish! my husband just bought one yesterday so i am still learning about mine. i hope i will be able to hand feed it like yours. what were you feeding it? i have frozen bloodworms for mine.

  • nice tank .Check out mine and tell me what you think

  • Actually I am not sure. He is about 6 inches right now and doesn't really seem to be growing much now. Maybe 7 or 8 in the wild, in a tank I don't know.

  • how big do they get? I mean maximum size~

  • Well, I have heard that too, but he seems to like the gravel just fine.

  • i got told elephant fish like sand bottom not stones/pebals

  • this story is kind of funny and sad but we used to have an elephant nose fish and a couple goldfish. well one of the goldfish had little baby goldfish and we were all excited. the next day we went to check the tank and the goldfish and her babies were all gone so we suspected the elephant fish ate them :(

  • Great Fish.

But did you recognised that your silver shark is quiet not happy about you putting your hand into the AQ?

He is trying to run away and swimming against the back glass, while your hand is inside.

  • You have a nice beautiful fish there,Exotic in other words, also i am getting my very first fish soon, and i might get an elephant nosed.

  • Was that an African Clawed frog?

  • I taught my dwarf blue gourami to be hand fed

  • you have a creepy hand, lol, cool elephant nose though. scary looking pleco

  • how big is your elephant nose?

  • he is about 6 inches long.

  • @rolfevans thankz. im thinkin of getting one. do u think they could fit in a 20 gallon?

  • @rolfevans ok thanks

  • stockholm fish?anyone?

  • Yes, Silver Sharks, very handsome chaps. They have been rehoused now as they were getting too big.
