After surfing a long board for the last year the ability duck dive is a godsend. One of the huge pluses of riding a shortboard is not getting thrashed by bigger waves when paddling out. Instead of holding on for dear life, you can pass under gracefully and keep on chugging. Waves that I used to say "oh shit" when I saw are now not nearly as intimidating. Plus you look good doing it. THANKS DUCK DIVE!
@littlelongboarder what sort of waves does it work on? i ride a mini mal and i have to flip it over but im trying to learn to duck dive cause my mini mal getting shorter on me, im 15 btw
Im 16 years old and i can duckdive a longboard. Its not hard, just stuff one rail down and level it out underwater instead of pushing straight down on both rails like on a shortboard.
@alec12 I agree somewhat but you can get moments in skating too. I have skate for 23 years and I have had my share of moments. people need to get out of the stage where they are concentrating on poping tricks and do em naturally. carving hard in a bowl is very akin to surfing. but nailing a 12 stair rail is all about the concentration and focus as oppposed to enjoying the moment as you call it. They are like comparing apples and oranges.
@alec12 THANK YOU!!!!!! I wanted to tell my friends that the whole time. they say skating has a moment. but i say ive been doing both for about 6 years. skating doesnt have a moment. you just feel good when you land a trick. THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN. you give me a way to explain it.
@MadGamer808 Skating does have a moment , if you skate street its about the tricks , if you skate bowl and like carving it up n cruising without pushing your deck its fun as hell especially if ya get a line goin with ur mates. Nothing like surfin concrete tearin shit up.
You should say you should paddle toward the wave as hard as you can, then the digging action is like digging in a spade with your foot or knee.
Also, what you are trying to achieve is to get in the circular, rolling part of the wave so it sucks you through. If you know what you are aiming for it's easier to work out.
@alec12 i can't tell if your talking to me, just to let you know i have been surfing for seven years and i know what surfing is like. I just thought it was funny that they put how to turtle in the discription.
Can I get some advice? When I duck dive, I get my nose under the water and when I duck down my head goes under water and the upper half of my torso but my legs are still above the surface and when I go under, the whitewash/waves just drags me back a little bit toward the shore. Any advice on what I should change?
"Duck diving a surfboard means turning a surfboard upside down and grabbing hold of it as the wave breaks over the top"... Say what?!
I'm a beginner surfer, I've got a 7'9'' board. I just can't duck dive, is my board too big for duck diving. The thing is so buoyant it is hard to push it under the water. thx
yah your board is pretty long so i dont think you can really duck dive just try turtling it.... "flipping it over and grab the rails more towards the nose and let the wave go over" dont let it go...and the board should push through the wave if its breaking...
Almost every mini-cam vid or "actual" vid of duck diving that I've seen shows the left foot pushing down on the tail in sync w/ the pushup. You can even tell the guy they show here is doing it as is right leg goes up in the air. Not sure how accurate this dude explained it...
When the waves are good, extremely rare in SoCal, you can surf much like the pros & 10 year olds in the big skateparks. ie San Jose. People here mostly don't get to experience good waves or skating big transitions, hype abound! So to come up with all this negative feedback without actually knowing is rediculous, typical of a hyped up SoCal surfer. Research these BEFORE you make another ignorant remark. All of YOUR claims are obviously not true. Thanks for showing such strong denial/hype.
What real is a 10 year old blazing a simple 180 aireal off a 7.5 foot transition at one of the Top Ten Skateparks. Hello, earth to monoboarders very close to waking up to full upgradation. Don't settle for bushi. I might ride that fake wave machine a couple of times to do a couple of air drops.
You'd rather watch others surf especially in the SoCal area. Skateboarding the new skateparks (San Jose) makes surfing look quack, it is. Even a 10 year old at the skatepark makes surfing look like people are just crusing. Surfing is nothing but phony marketing marketing marketing. 30 year old claim to be having fun but ten year olds at the skatepark are are getting rides much like surfers get Pavones or Mentwaiis. SoCal is overpriced hype, once again
Look whos talking. Yah, now I'm mentally challenged because I want more than we got. All you do is come up with some insult. ie. "Pervert and mentally challenged". Jerkyboys don't work son. Being a punk is not really funny but to your lame friends.
What should i do if im a beginner and im using a longboard. usually i get smoked by the wave and pulled back towards shore, but maybe i was just trying to big of waves for my first time.
The guy is right in saying that turtling a surfboard means turning a surfboard upside down and grabbing hold of it as the wave breaks over the top. The description says that that's called duck diving.
I'm a foot guy. Personally I think it's a question of taste. I can't do it with my knee on any board, but am fine with my foot. I reckon you should stick with whatever feels right to you, as long as you get your arse under water. Good luck mate.
omg this guy knows wat hes tlking about but he dosnt explain it verry well, im a bodyboarder im sure all u surfurs hate me but wen i duckdive i do pretty much wat he said and i kinda surf abit so yew!
hey, nice vid. i have a few criticisms though. When I duck dive I prefer to sink my board uniformly, i.e sink the nose and the tail at the same time. I also try not to wait til the last second. It does take a second or two to sink the board to a proper depth before sinking your head & rest of your body.
i agree with you just a question. My surfboard is 6.7 feet long and I am 6 feet tall. I do not exactly know how to position myself on the board when paddling out. Some guys are telling my to have my knees at the end some other to have my ankles at the end.
@peckawoodd yeah bought one too hahaha

Could I duck dive on a 7 foot 2? I'm a beginner and don't know anything :P
If it's too long what can I do instead besides turtel? When I surf I find it intensly hard to get beyond the break cuz I can't duck dive yet.
Btw if someone gives me a good answer I'll sub them :)

You will always get dragged back a little bit theres nothing you can do about that, you just have to try get deeper and try get your whole body under
mrnickb 1 year ago
either your boards too thick or your not heavy enough. grab your rails roll and pull the nose down
quittner 1 year ago
I would recommend using your foot instead of your knee to push the back of your board down. It helps for deeper duck dives.

how heavy do u need to be when duck diving a 6 2 short board (non epoxy)

it all depends on the size of the waves but i tend to go about a foot or two deep i have a 6 1

ive a quick question
to get the back of the board to follow the front, should i use my foot or knee to make it more horitontal so it doesnt get caught out by the wave?
kezza10mail 2 years ago
depends on how short ur board is. if ur knee is at ur traction pad then ur knee. if u got a gun and ur foot is right at ur pad then ur foot.
