  • If I'd like to use a TR-707 with this synth/sequencer, would I have to mod it to make it sync properly?

  • @steinsprang You can sync the 202 and 707 without modding. The 707 also has a sync24 connection. When you use the 707 as master, it will transmit both dinsync out and midi out, so you can use it together with other midi devices. The sequencer clock isnt 100% stable though.

Some people claim the 707 also transmits midi and dinsync out when it runs in slave mode, but mine doesnt, so it might be some changes in the 707's rev's.

  • @Dsil303 What if I used the 202 as master? Will that get rid of the delay? I'm only planning on using these two units together as of now.

  • @steinsprang There is no delay when you use dinsync. The delay only occurs when you play the 202 through its CV inputs.

You can use the 202 as a master if you want, but than you'll loose the possibilty to connect other midi devices.

What other gear will u use with the 202 and 707??

  • @Dsil303 I have now been using the 707 as master through DIN sync and it works perfectly (CYCLE had to be turned on on the 202). What do you mean by that the sequencer clock isnt 100& stable?

  • Nice!

  • If you were using MIDI through a MIDI to CV box to control the 202 with this bypass mod, could you get this kind of 303 glide? or are you getting this glide just because you are controlling it with a 303?

  • Its possible to get a glide with the 202 though midi-cv, but not exactly the same as a 303 glide though, so not the same as on this video.

  • you can back up your 202 sequences to tape. or anything that you could connect the tape output to. I've heard of people saving their 202 sequences on cd-r's, on their computer...

  • Try 202hack!

Its easy, cheap and is ver y easy to use.

Connect 202 to pc and record sequences from and to the pc. Load midi files into 202 etc.

  • Where to find this St. Eric and his mod?

  • St. Eric is a vintage synth repairer in Dordrecht Holland. But you dont need him, just check cykongs website (see info box of this video) for specs and you need someone with soldering experience.

  • I used to prog. odd numbered patterns for looping-to kill repetition. get a 101 with modular mod by analogue solutions..the only other mod that would be dope on a 101,is if you could detune the different wave shapes of the osc's-(simulating multi-oscs) hmmm anyway, 101 ftw.

  • I think I would take a sh-101 over a 202 any day of the week..Ive had both as well, and the fact that you lose your seq's everytime is complete bullshit,I thought mine was broke back in the day,I just could not belive roland would build a machine-(after the 303 btw) that could not hold its own patterns after power up-

  • Hi.. I'm having a hard time deciding between a mc-202 and a sh-101 for my basslines. Which one would you prefer.. I'll be using it together with a tr-707 and some softsynths. Hope to later add some more analogs to the set-up.. I love music like orbital, underworld etc.. :O) In advance, thanks. Nico

  • Well, i've got both synths. I find the low end on the 101 a bit fatter. So if its just for the bassline, i'd say go for a 101. Also, the 101 got normal keys, more lfo types, a noise source and an arp (and a small sequencer). The sequencer can only handle 100 notes, while the 202's sequencer can have a lot more. Also, the 202's memory is volatile, so it will be erased after power down. The 101 can remember one sequence, also after power down (when connected to a psu or batteries)

    Go for the 101!

  • The 101 also has an external click in, so you can use the 707s rimshot trigg out to trigger the 101 sequence or arp. Very cool feature. And the random lfo kicks ass, because its synced to the incoming click.

101 can be played through cv/gate in as well, so you can use your daw/sequencer with a midi-cv converter to play the 101.

I love my 202, but the 101 is just a bit better =)

  • The 202 has delay on it's LFO, which the 101 is lacking.

I agree, if you're looking for either the 101 or 202 for basses, go for the 101.

  • hey, im having the same troubles as you..101 or 202 ARGGHH?!?what did ya go for in the end?!

  • hey, im having the same troubles as you..101 or 202 ARGGHH?!?what did ya go for in the end?!

  • if you have the money, get the sh-101.

today you don´t really need any sequencers inside the machines, you can trigger them with software.

just use a cv to midi interface, then it´s possible;)

  • Dsil is probably right about the best choice (101) but the accent on the 202 which can be made in a way much more violent than the 303 is something you wouldn't want to miss.

  • just so delicious slidey acid goodness with some nice drums, YUM YUMS!

  • Nice! I will try to find out how to control my 202 by my 303. Or is a mod necessary for that or do you use the 303's cv/gate out and the 202's external keyboard cv/gate in?

  • Hey Klausito ;-)

Indeed, i used the 303's cv/gate outs to control the 202. I did have the 202 modified by St Eric to get rid of the lag on the cv/gate inputs.

At 00:44 you can hear how the 202 plays the notes without the bypass modification. It doesnt work at all.

  • Ok thx! I thought the bleeps at 00:44 were intended like that...lol...

  • lol me too, sounds like a really nice break ;)

  • In this particular case it doesnt really sound bad, but most of the time it just sounds too much out of sync

  • I've been all over cykongs website, and there doesn't seem to be any mods which explain the state of my 202... There is an 'extra' chip inside the machine which has been patched onto the 202 board in various places, the circuit track has been cut in a few places as well. I'm still trying to figure out what it does to the unit..

Looks like I'm gonna have to learn basic electronics and how to read circuit diagrams before I can do any mods on my unit. I might buy another 202 and compare them both.,

  • Hello again matey. I was logged in as '

edsfx' last comment. . I got my 202 a few days ago, and it looks like it's already been seriously modded. Inside is a mess!

I've managed to give it some awesome overdrive, and a high speed LFO mod which is amazing when the rez is whacked right up.

None of the other mods that I've tried seem to work correctly. The whole machine has been patched and re-wired by the previous owner, so I'm gonna have to figure out what he's done before I can complete my mods!

  • Nice one! The 202 still is a great little synth!

Have a look at cykongs website, which is mentioned in the baout this video section. He has a lot of pictures with the mods as well, so maybe it helps you to figure out which mods are done/undone on your 202.

    Good Luck!

  • Cool das echt vet!

ik wist wel dat het kon maar niet hoe het klonk het klinkt echt als een TB!

    GrTz,Je Neef(je)

  • Thanks alot there mate!

Can't wait for my 202 to be delivered, I'll be putting on a few 202 vids myself. Possibly a video documentary following the mods that I will be performing.

  • Cheers, you're welcome.

So you're giong to perform the mods yourself? That's great! I'm not that good with the soldering iron, so I wont do it myself.

Which mods are you going to apply?

  • hiya mate, can you show me where i can get some details on how to bypass my mc202s cpu?

  • I put a link to cykongs website in the "about this video" section!

  • I've been working on getting my 202 to sound like this. failing pretty much. I'm wondering if the glides you're getting are the internal portomento or are the glides actually sent by the 303 cv? thats the only part I can't get to seem exactly right is the glide sound. wondering if it's just not gonna sound like that at all or am I just not doing it right yet?

  • The 202 in this video is being controlled by the 303 and me only, so all the glides are done by the 303's cv/gate out. I havent been able to get the same 303 glides with my 202's own sequencer.

The 202's porta isn't the same as the 303's one.

I think the 303's glide begins in the tone before the glide, where the 202 starts at the tone where u program the glide.

  • damn, now if only I had 2 grand laying around to get a 303. :(

  • nice one

  • Excellent display of what an MC-202 can do.

Did you install the bypass switch yourself?

    PEACE & CHEERS,

    RRKS

  • Nope, the mod is done by St Eric, an analoque synth doctor.

The mod is like the one from cykong's website, but a little different.
