  • Wow, over 25000 views, Thanks everyone! I have a no name generic BMX frame I got for free and was thinking I should powdercoat it and film the process again. I've made videos for "Granny Smith Sparkle" "Candy Red" and "Gloss Black". This one's up to you guys, I need some suggestions.

  • dam that looks amazing im subbing i wanna see more cool paint jobs

  • XD

  • Slapped together another video last night, this time I'm showing Candy Red powder coat on a Yamaha sport bike frame. It's on my channel, can't post a link to it here for some reason...

  • how much would a job like this cost?

  • @cccplt Around $150-$175 for everything (blasting and coating with both coats) includes frame, fork, pedals, bars, stem, etc.

  • good video but it kinda looks like your in a dungeon :D

  • @CafariX Haha, thanks, Yeah it kinda feels like a dungeon some days...

  • @VillainMotorsports great video i just wanted to ask iam having my alloy wheels powder coated is it better than painting them?

  • @jass355 it's a lot more durable then regular paint, it's not bulletproof though. If you start slamming into curbs, boulders or other cars there's a pretty good chance it'll come off, but will outlast regular paint in normal wear and tear conditions.

  • it looks like haro shredder

  • @whiz62 @cdr49 Just found out It's a Haro Cozmo, still not sure on the year though

  • this may sound like a dumb question but i wanna get my bike done except its a heaps lite bike would it add any extra weight?

  • @TheHsack Yes it would but the amount of wright would depend on the size of the frame, number of coats and thickness of the coating.

  • @VillainMotorsports ok cool thanks mate

  • what year is that frame i have that same frame at my house but i don't know what year and model it is

  • @whiz62 I'm not sure what year it is exactly, I bought it used from a friend in the late '90's so maybe '95 or '96 model?

  • @VillainMotorsports thanks for your somewhat knowledge and i wish i could find out what it is and could you want more vids on this bike

  • are u shooting at 50kws?

  • @unit666industries Yes, 50Kv's (50,000 volts)

  • @VillainMotorsports thats on first coat or second coat?

  • @unit666industries First and second. I've found that with my gun 50Kv works great for the first coat and unless there's any really tight corners or recessed areas I'll leave it set at 50 for the clear or second coat. Although sometimes the clear wont attract to the base coat very well with some powders/colours, then I have to set the voltage lower or higher depending on what's happening.

  • @VillainMotorsports true true, ill found out some powders wont stick at high but lower voltage. that is per second coats. also, im looking to get a bigger oven some like yours, is that a 5ft or 6ft tall?

  • @unit666industries the inside of my oven is 5ft high, but with the elements on the bottom and hanging hooks up top the largest piece I can put in is about 4 1/2 feet high. Which is plenty tall enough for most motorcycle frames, bicycle frames, car/truck rims.

  • @VillainMotorsports sorry if i ask questions, but i rather to ask you about oven instead to a sales rep. oven company. have you ever done vehicle engine case?

  • @unit666industries no worries on the questions, I don't mind sharing a bit of my know-how. I have coated engine cases for a pitbike engine. They were brand new cases that have never had oil in them so they weren't hard to prep. But if you were to do used cases, you'd want to clean them very very well and do a couple pre-bake cycles in the oven to bake out any embedded oils before coating. I have a couple pictures of the gold engine cases I did on my facebook page, search "Villain Motorsports"

  • @VillainMotorsports on your sand blasting. do you send it out or in house? if send it out how much do you pay?

  • @unit666industries I do all my own sand blasting, I use aluminum oxide in my cabinet blaster and silica in my portable outdoor blaster. I've had customers bring in a few things that they had blasted elsewhere but I still had to go over it again and get all the spots they missed.

  • @VillainMotorsports i too use aluminum oxide leaves a nice clean surface. my blaster is not big enough for motorcycle frames. so i dont know if is worth it to get a bigger blaster or send it out.

  • @unit666industries if you have the time to sandblast larger pieces I would recommend doing it yourself with a pressure pot style blaster and setting it up outside. That way you know it's done right :)

  • FUCKEN BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • amazing finish - I am gonna get a quote for my XC bike frame for a flat black powder coat now ive seen this vid

    5 ***** video .

  • I have a titanium bicycle frame with no clear coat. Is it possible to powder coat, re-decal, and clear coat a titanium frame? I only want the seat stays and part of the top tube powder coated and the remaining titanium just clear coated. Would really like to see an anodizing video.

  • @pjoiner0 That sounds like it should be do-able. You can paint over powdercoat, a customer of mine actually had me powdercoat his truck rims then had someone airbrush some designs on them.

I'm in the final stages of re-building my anodizing setup, so I should be able to have a video up in a few weeks or so.

    Thanks!

  • thumbs up if you CANT HEAR SHIT

  • does the entire powder coating process will affect the strength or the durability of the steel? same question also regarding chrome plating. thanks.

  • @bitebrian888 The curing temperature for most powders is 400 degrees Fahrenheit and lower, not hot enough to effect the strength of steel or compromise heat treatment of chromoly.

  • how much weight will it add to the frame for a single coating? thanks

  • @bitebrian888 maybe a couple grams? I really don't know. Size of the frame, thickness of coating, number of coats will all affect the final weight.

  • i have a chrome frame that already has a spots of rust. what will i do before taking it to powder coating service? what will happen if the frame is not totally free from small spot of rust and then it is powder coated? and do i really need to remove the headset cup and the bottom bracket cup (its a one piece bottom bracket) thanks

  • @bitebrian888 The shop that is doing the coating should sandblast the rust and entire frame before coating so that shouldn't be a problem as long as the chrome plating doesn't start to peel. The bearing cups can be masked so they don't need to be removed.

  • This video is exactly what i was looking for. few questions... if i wanted to do part chrome plating and part powder coating would you recommend chroming the entire frame and then powder coating a part of it? or would the temperature be too much for the chrome plating? Hard to adjust the thickness of the powder to match the thickness of chrome plating for smooth transition? for a chromoly frame, is sand blasting ok? will it pit? media blasting like soda better? or is hand sanding the best prep?

  • @pachris I would chrome the entire frame first then mask the areas you want to keep chrome. I have coated over lots of chrome and the heat doesn't affect it unless there is a lacquer coating on the chrome (it will turn yellow but can be sanded off) If you was a smooth transition from the powder to chrome you can feather the edge but lightly sanding the powdered edge.

  • and where did u get that oven

  • where did u get the oven and do u need to bake it or can it just be like that.

  • @whitelikeu I built the oven myself. The powder has to be cured in the oven. It sprays on as a dry powder and will wipe off/blow off untill it's exposed to heat and cured.

  • how much would u charge

  • @LilKody765 For just the frame in a 2 stage colour like in the video you'd be looking at about $120 for blasting, prepping and coating. For all the other pieces for the rest of the bike in a single stage colour (gloss black as pictured) would be around $60 for the prep work and coating.

  • hey man where abouts do you get a air compressor that is right for this?? please tb

  • @MrChuppa123 You'll want to use a compressor that can keep up with the particular gun you're using as far as CFM goes, the actual air pressure going to the gun is quite low 10-20psi so you don't need anything too big. The most important thing is to have clean dry air, oil-less compressors and an air drier are the way to go.

  • Greta vid.

Do you have to turn up the volage to apply the clear?

  • @GeorgiaBoi70 I usually have to turn it up a little (5-10Kv) but sometimes if the first coat was too thick or too many recessed areas creating "faraday effect" (areas where the powder will actually be repelled) then the gun has to be turned down to a very low setting.

  • Thanks.

You did a good job of explaining and demonstrating the process.

    Thumbs up.

  • damn that looks slick!
