Renewable doesn't mean better. Nuclear fusion is the future, because it's got the higher energy flux density, it's green and its fuel hydrogen is virtually inexhaustible. Look up the solar power tower in Seville, Spain. Nothing more complex than mirrors and steam generators. The whole "night" thing is bogus. You store surplus heat during the day using molten salts and extract it at night. At current efficiencies, we could power the U.S. grid using a ten percent chunk of Nevada. I have two 3'x5' panels on my roof that give all my hot water, and a solar oven in the back yard that cooks for free. A watt saved is as good as a watt generated.

Gee Hedphelym - I guess that's why I can't take a hot shower at night - because the solar panels on my roof aren't heating the water. Except - I can and do take hot showers at night. The panels heat my 80-gallon tank during the day, and I use (very) hot water whenever I want. You can store heat on a residential level, or a commercial level and use it at night.
Who mentioned solar cells, anyway? Solar thermal gives at least as much bang for the buck as photovoltaics.

Fusion is all well and good, and I wish the researchers luck in their endeavors. Meanwhile, on the other extreme of the periodic table, I'd like to see more work done on molten fluoride thorium fission reactors. They have the most promise for quick results and clean energy (that is, none of the transuranics that make present nuke reactors' waste an icon of "dirty").

Thanks to a generally stupid public, the actual ammount of waste isn't the issue. Current uranium nuclear waste disposal is completely safe as well.
The problem is that even with cleaner thorium reactors, the responce will still be "Fission = nuculer = radiation = death and destruction"

FFS... You all want to stop fucking whining about the acting and look more at the technology. Granted, Toroidal fusion reactors are some distance in the future, but think of this. I believe it was the ITER that holds the world record at 8 minutes or thereabouts. A mammoth achievement and a big step to making this viable.
