  • in retrospect everything usually seems 20x better than it does at the moment in the past... if that make's any sense...

  • <3 this one.

  • Wow. That was awesome.

    -Gears

  • Alan you are awesome...I've really missed you and your videos. I haven't been around for a while to watch them or post videos myself...my dad had a heat attack at the beginning of the year and I spent most of my time holding his hand while he slowly died. It's been a month since he made his way to heaven.

This video was worth waiting for. I have to favorite it. You are such an inspiration.

  • Alan yours is probably one of the most interesting 'Talk To Your Past(s)'

    Thanks

  • I LOVE YOU

  • This was awesome! I was Captivated!

  • I think we can all take some of this advice. :)

  • lol i was just about to think about what i would tell my 15 year old self then i realized im 15 right now.... lol

  • hahaha i love this!

  • p.s. i may or may not be IN LOVE WITH U! ur such an amazing guy!

  • i like working with u...i miss u...i love ya....and i would liek you to PLEASE SEND ME MY zine story remeber

  • very kewl idea :) i guess i could tell my 15 year old self. you do get the heck out of that town!

  • this was great Alan! :D

  • Were you living in an isolated Amish community ten years ago? Because I know I was instant messaging MY friends ten years ago...

  • Great video,

it was a nice insight into some of your history. would be very great to have the chance to talk to your past. I find it really strange that the internet hasnt been around too long, i thought about this when you mentioned you not knowing about it. its a weird thought, alan without the internet

  • I found this through ItalianStallionette. Very good!

  • <3 this video.

  • I think this kind of video would only be fun if your future turned out to be happy. For example, if I told my 13 year old self (as I'm 23 now) what happens in 3 years I would definately make myself cry.

  • Lol this was actually such a good video, i might make a video response :P

  • I thought some of that advise probably works for grown ass people too.

  • alan, this is beautiful.

  • good idea

  • Hey Alan! I adore these videos- will probably make my own right after I take the MCAT!

Isn't it weird that 10 years ago seems like a long time, but being 15 doesn't seem like that long ago? lol

  • I can't talk to me in the past, that guy was an asshole!

  • way to blow your own trumpet

  • O my freaking gosh...

    that actually moved me.

  • it is one of your best vlogs, even thru all the ego stroking. =)

  • I wish I ould make a video like this... maybein a few yeas when I'll actually have a younger self who needs advice... right now I'm only 14, and I don't really have anything to say to my 7-year-old or 6-year-old self ^^

  • Just curious, why were you 15 in your first year of high school?

  • Comment removed

  • Umm no it's not I live in New York. High school = 9th through 12th grade. I didn't consider how it used to be junior high so don't give me that >_>

  • Comment removed

  • New York has everything to do with it because the cut off date in attending schools differs from state-county-and school district and in New York state (unless you were held back) you start freshman year at age 14.

  • Comment removed

  • On my original comment I was misunderstood what he said and I thought he *started* freshman year at age 15 and I'm sorry about that but you didn't have to fight me on it >_> lol

  • awesome video.

  • great video. If I could talk to my past I would tell me to never go see Revolutionary Road. What a piece of shit!

    Also, thanks for subscribing.

  • I'm eighteen and I really wish I could watch a video from my future self to see how life turns out. Because as of right now I have no idea what will become of me.

  • Hey Alan! You are a great youtuber! I just discovered you, actually. So, please reply: Where can I go to read your book?

Is it in stores? Seriously! And what's it about?

    The Best,

    Ethan Lockhart,

    RFG

  • Dear fifteen-year-old David Wraith,

    Two words: LEARN KARATE!

Alan, just read your book. Thanks for writing it.

  • this reminds me of the song by brad paisley called letter to me "each and everytime u have a fight, just pretend ur wrong and dad [mom] is right" good song check it out

  • brilliant idea. great job

  • Great project. I want to have my 15 year-old students talk to their 10 year-old selves...Thanks.

  • please correct me. these things are called zeens? google had no promising results.

  • Try "zines" ;)

  • I already commented this, but then I lost this internet. If this is a re-post, OH WELL.

There was a time you didn't know all the glories of the INTERNET? Wow.

    Work it, Alan :)

  • I know, I didn't get a computer until I turned 18! Never touched one before that. Probably why I turned out as well-adjusted and normal as I have. *eyeroll*

  • that was actually kind of inspiring, despite it being advice to your past self!

    cheers!

  • How ironic...I once wrote an article about this very thing...I held a picture of me when I was really young and gave her advice...I basically cried the whole time that I was talking to her...Its amazing! Its also alarming because you realize how protective you are of your younger self and as an adult, you forget how special you are....I loved listening to you doing this. ~Raven

  • That article sounds like it would be interesting. I had so much fun doing this, thanks for watching!

  • o my gosh this was really interesting.

I just ordered your youtube book and now I'm evenmore motivated to read it!

  • Thanks! Hope you enjoy the book too!

  • when I said "ordered it" I ment I had just received it... and... I AM LOVING IT TO DEATH!!! not to mention how much I really do need those tips...

  • You're amazing. Absolutely amazing. I have no words that can describe it apart from one word. 'Amazing'

  • Aww, thanks!

  • that was really nice. good job!

  • This is really really awesome. I admire you for thinking of doing this and putting it on the Internet for the rest of the world to see.

  • Cool man. maybe...

  • Aw that was really sweet :D

  • "For the love of God, buy some gold." Haha!

  • peter griffin!

  • lol i was watching this and my dad walked in and said "Its Peter Griffen!" and i relized you do look like him!!!lol

  • Love this!

  • GREAT SCOTT!

  • I miss the passionate vlogging alan. I think more people then just me will be happy to see a great video like this. Alan I have got to say that I really enjoyed watching this because of the planned thought work in this video that is really did work. Good Job

  • You make me smile :)

Good job turning out so cool.

  • that was awesome XD

  • that was really really awesome alan :)

  • I'd probably tell me 15 year old me to study harder!

  • Me too, wait, I am 15! STUDY HARDER! xP

  • Great idea & well done!

  • I think it would be bad if this was real you know? If this was acctually possible because .. Wouldnt we all end up just sitting and waiting for it to happen??

hmmm this is nice though!!!! xx

  • that was sweet :)

  • It's soo frustrating being able to write lyrics / play instruments really well but not being able to carry a tune! guhhh

great video alan, it made me want to vlog.

  • You made zines too?! Geeeez you're so cool, Alan.

  • Thanks! I made a number of zines and ran a distro for a few years (hence the screenname!)

  • You don't have any still for sale, do you?

  • No, but I may have an extra copy or two laying around if you want to PM me your mailing address.

  • Ah, awesome. Done! Thanks :)

  • How Goldfinger was created.

  • I was 15 in october so it might be a bit soon...

maybe i'll do middle school me

  • mikma was here

  • 15 was actually a harsh year. I think sophomore year is pretty rough on most people. Even with my friends, a lot of them went through shit times that year.

  • what neighborhood in chicago do u consider to to be so great?

  • Great vid, Aln! I want to do one of these.

  • tell Alan five years ago to buy all the google stock he can afford

  • I think I will. Now I've just gotta wait for 5-10 years.

  • This looks like fun. 'Tis a shame I can't remember back to 15. It was a looooong time ago! =)

  • You just go back 10 years. :)

  • BUY SOME GOLD!!!

    ROFLMAO

  • I think not listening to my mom was my biggest mistake. But she talked so, so much. Just like I do now. And I was, you know, a stupid teenager.

  • that was very sweet.

  • :) Amazing Alan, thanks so much for the response. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I love the little insights into people's lives before and beyond YouTube, that beforehand we wouldn't see. I don't know why I didn't expect it to turn out like this when I initially made the video! :P

Thanks again, glad everything turned out great. DFTBA <3

  • Thanks for watching Liam! It's been great seeing others video yeah.

  • Alan, this is such a lovely idea.

I was recently contemplating the idea of reading the diary I kept when I was in grades 8 and 9 because I haven't read it in a while, and this just makes me want to even more. Heck, it might spark some inspiration to make one of these myself!

    You definitely NEVER FTBA.

    -Laura

  • Thanks Laura!

  • I love the bit about gold!

  • nice way to reflect on what youve done and what has happened in the past 10 years

  • brilliant, man. brilliant.

"and for the love of god, buy some gold!" lol

    =D

  • Your videos are making ME want to become a vlogger.... haha mama vlogger. What would my name be????

  • Oh you should mama Carr! That would be fun. What's wrong with your current username?

  • wow! a guy with a good life! they still make these?

  • that was an awesome video Alan! :)

    i really enjoyed it.<3

i actually learned a lot from watching some of the "talk to your past" videos. i'm only 16 now so i'm trying to live life to its fullest and try not to have any regrets.

  • these vids are soo cool.

It was akshully interesting to learn so much about you :)

some of it is kinda confuzzlin, but us viewers make do :)

  • I'd totally do this-but I'm already 15 XD.

Sorry to hear that you moved in the middle of freshman year in High School- that must've been rough.

    I liked this vlog a lot alan~

  • This is absolutely lovely

  • Oh this is so cool!

Aw, you're a good present Alan and a good fifteen year old Alan. So nice of you to give your younger self some advice... Kinda like an older brother.

    =]

  • This was a nice video - just the right amount of nostalgia without going overboard, and an interesting way to learn more about you :)

Too bad that our fifteen year old selves can't watch them, though. That's the one nice thing about making one for the future.

  • Lol, mine wouldn't go so well...theres nothing I could say the year old me would understand!

P.S. I orderd my copy od So Jokes like the day after pre-orders where being accepted, and I still haven't recieved it...I was just wondering if it will be here soon because my dad is starting to get mad and thinks its a scam, but I don't...

  • Are you in the US? If so, you should have it very very shortly. If you're outside of the US, it'll take about one more week, the custom forms are backing up and taking a long time to fill out.

  • lol that explains it! I'm up here in Canada, B.C! Thanks for letting me know and I hope you get those forms all filled out! Now I also have an excuse to tell my dad...thanks very much!

    Cierra

  • Beautiful. I think I will join you in this topic. Wonderful advice Alan. I would have liked you alot when we were young. I like you now, but as a kid... Man, I really would of needed a guy like you.

  • This should be viral! I love the idea x x x

  • That was great, Alan! You have great advice. I definitely agree that it's better to talk about your small annoyances rather than let them build until you hate everything.

I responded textually to the original video, but I might make a video response too, at some point.

  • Cool, I look forward to seeing it!

  • I think this will certainly be my next video blog. Good job, sir.

  • Yay, that'll be fun. =)

  • well i am 15 so i'll just write this:

    2 year old Kealan:

Please don't wait till your 5 to get potty trained, please for the love of god. it will save you a lot of hassle.

  • Dear me 1 year from now: Blow up a watermelon in my honor =P

  • are you on crack

  • Very cool idea. Interesting way to give us an insight into your life, but also be creative.

  • Dear old self: INVENT YOUTUBE.

  • Haha, seriously.

  • one more piece of advice for fifteen-year old alan

    God is watching

use the bathroom for only what its made for

    NOTHING ELSE

  • sweet

  • Oh jeez. Don't tell young Alan about myspace!

Haha good move with the gold advice.

    Great video Alan.

  • Also, the music thing sucks, I know how you feel. Though I can't play the guitar/any musical instrument more complicated that the recorder, and I can't write lyrics, and I can't sing. But I want to! Blargh.

  • It's soo frustrating. GRRRRR.

  • cool

  • I love hearing people's pasts.

    Good video!

  • That was really nice.

  • yay! Now I REALLY want to make mine... aghhhh but what will I say to 12-yr-old me??

  • "when you're 22 and vlogging about books you haven't finished reading, don't smack yourself so hard on the forehead. it hurts."

  • I think my favorite part was "It all turns out okay."

    That makes me smile.

I'm not making one of these because I don't really have the perspective to tell 7-year-old me something, but it's great to see people telling their former selves that it all turns out okay. Gives a nice sense of hope to us younger viewers.

  • You should try it though, there has to be *something* you'd want to say?

  • I'm trying to think of what I was like in second grade....

    I guess I could think of a few things... I probably won't do 10 things, but we'll see. :)

  • Great video Alan!

  • Fantastic Alan, honestly fantastic.

  • Thanks TeddyBear.

  • You can call me Joe! ^^

  • HI JOE!

  • these are so much fun!

i'm glad you turned out well!

  • I agree. On both accounts. =)

  • this would be awesome to do to go back and give your old seft some advice

  • OH my, I wish we could go back and give advise for real. This kinda made me sad. But you turned out really cool!!!

  • Thanks. =)

  • loved it :D blogtv's good too :P

  • That was brilliant! :)

I really wish that going back in time and giving your younger self some advice were possible. Sadly it isn't so all you can do is take all the experiences (good and bad) and do your best at living the kind of life you desire.

You, Alan, are living a life that many would want( including me :P). You have shown excellent judgement in your life, which is why you are so awesome.

Thanks for being an inspiration for all of us!

  • OMG just imagine if this really worked.

(steps through hole in space time continuum and vanishes)

  • omg i love these talk to your past videos. they give us such great advice- and we find out more about our youtubers.

  • Agreed! Thanks for watching.

  • I think there is so much more to say to yourself when the past 10 years have been eventful ones. I wonder what you would say if you saw this when you were 15... hmmm.

  • I would probably say "holy shit, what's that box you trapped me inside of!?"

  • Wonderful video! Great advice :)

  • if i played this game i'm not sure it would work so well because mostly what i would have to say is 'young jes, enjoy life now cause it will only get harder.'

  • I think a lot of people feel that way.

  • oh, a reply. how totally unexpected. i don't think i have every gotten a reply from the person in the video before. that is pretty cool. thanks.

  • Awesome video Alan, great idea.

    Much enjoyed

  • Awesome! I'd love to do something like this.. But I feel too young :D heh...

  • I love happy endings.

    :)

  • I am commenting! And I am watching blog tv! And I have not watched the video yet! But I will! Woo!

  • Watch it... you know you want to...

  • a lot of these end the same... it's great to know we're all going to be okay :)

  • And it's an awesome book. :)

  • Thanks!

  • amazing (: x

  • i hope your not encouraging yourself to skip school? ( :S)

  • I am. It's worth it.

  • wow kickass vid Alan!

    so ur like 25 now?

    nice life!

  • Yup, I'm 25.

  • Oh wow woulda never guessed :P you act so much older

  • I sometimes wish I could go back in time and tell myself how to handle the things that I've been through. There are alot of things that I could have done, choices I could have made so that my life now would be better. I know that you're only metaphorically talking to your fifteen year-old-self, but it would be awesome if you could talk to your past self.

  • I would SO make a video for this if I had a camera first of all and if I was a little bit older. Sorry Alan. <3

  • It's okay Emy, thanks for watching!

  • Blogtv ftw. Great video- I enjoyed it immensely.

  • ;P how do you earn money?

As in what do you do online?

  • Great video Alan. Its great seeing these videos people about talking their past.

  • Thanks Barry. Did you record one yet?

  • Not yet, my camera is broken and have to wait til next month for a new camera.

  • lol you were rushing like you were actually talking to yourself and you didnt have much time! lol

  • Lol, "For th
