@revengeoftheturnip It is a Muallaq Hadith (Those hadiths whose first transmitter is not known, or a few of whose transmitters are not known, or not one of whose transmitters is known.) on the basis of that ibn Hazem said that this Hadith is weak.
Also scholars like imam Ghazali held the opinion that music was permissible and could bring you closer to Allah on the condition that it is used in the right way.

@sensation2k8 Its not as simple as that there are other Hadith's where the prophet Mohammed ordered people to play the Duff (Type of drum) and sing when the Duff it self is an instrument. Also the scholars who say it is Haram allow it for medical purposes for something called Musical Therapy which exists in some hospitals so this proves music can be used for good.
The scholars who allow music don't allow all music only the music which has a good message with no swearing or bad images.
