To avoid aggression u need to get them as small as possible and make sure u get only 1 male and about 3 females.Males will fight if they are in a smaller tank. The males have a pinted top fin, female top fin is rounded thats how u can tell the diffrence. I have 6 gourami 4 yellow and 2 blue with only 1 yellow male and there is no aggrrssion at all between them or my other fish and they are all between 4-6 inches long now in a 90gl tank with tetras corys barbs etc.
I have a question: I just got my blue gourami and it seems to be really shy i guess yo could say. I have him in with 2 male guppies and a pleco. Everytime i approch the fish tank the gourami darts under the rock that i have set up so im not sure if he is getting any of the food i am putting in the tank. Do you have any suggestions?
@burkdollm My blue gourami is like that too. It backs away from any human coming near the tank or any loud tapping on the glass. Just stay away from the tank about 4+ feet away and they'll eat without worrying. Besides, if you were trapped inside your home with no way out whatsoever and see a giant Godzilla looking right at you outside your window... wouldn't YOU get scared too? :)
@burkdollm if you just got them dont worry. I have 2 of them as well and they would hang out in the back of my tank by my floating plant. try and get them to start eating but dont get to close to the tank while doing it! ive had mine for just over a week now and there always out swimming with the other fish! make sure to leave a little space at the top of the tank too! this fish takes oxygen from outside of the water instead from inside.
I have a Blue Gourami and he leaves all my other fish alone, but his is constantly chasing and attacking my Opaline Gourami. They are both the same size and I do not want to get rid of any fish. I want to get rid of hi aggression towards my Opaline Gourami. Any suggestions?
mine murdered his tank mates so i cant really place him with anything other than hisself, and how im assured this is that when he sees his reflection he darkens up and attacks it, although he his my favorite, he has a lot of personality, and follows me when i walk past him lol
i have 6 gouramis 1 neon 2 blue 1 flame 1 gold n 1 opaline n they get along welltogether it depends on the size of the tank i have a 56 gallon so thers lots of room 4 em all plus i have 7 loaches 1 pleco n 1 banjo catfish n 3 african dwarf frogs
My blue gourami is in 55 gallons. Sometimes he'll dart after another fish, but they don't seem afraid. It seems like he's just bored. Once I saw him pull back one of his tentacles, then quickly touch another fish, then dart away, like he was playing "tag". He can't, however, be trusted not to eat young small neon tetras. My little clown fish didn't mind him, when they were both going after a pellet this clown fish started sucking/nipping at him to push him away. :)
mine killed my angel fish the day i bought it :( but i have 3 green tiger barbed fish witch are fast and the blue gourami fish doesnt hurt them and my betta fish just stays in my big sea shell :)
@reviewerboy123 Yep. I have about 13 tigerbarbs / albino mix swimming around with 3 opaline gouramis. I have never seen the tigerbarbs nip the gourami though sometimes the gourami will have a go at a TB if they get frisky.
i have 4 and they have killed 7 angelfish 2 tetra and 3 red gourami and pleco have them with rainbow shark and male and female swordtail which they dont mind
@Ulquiorras4Meanness once i had my dwarf gourami in they where already fighting becouse my dwarf gourami is also agressive against my blue gourami they will never stop fighting... thinking about returning the blue one
One more thing. Gourami is often kept with other fish in "Community tanks". However it is my experience that they should be kept by themselves. They are Semi-Aggressive however I would classify them more as terriroral. They needs space of at least 20 gallons for themselves so this leaves ( for my instance 29 gallon tank) about 9 inches of fish left. I could go with either a bottom dweller or maybe snails or shrimp.
My Blue Three spotted Gourami is full grown. He is 5 1/2 inches and in great shape. He is kept in a 29 gallon by himself with tons of live plants, driftwood, and a large rock. Note to anyone in interest. Gourami's produce alot of waste. Probably equivelant to gold fish. They are omnivorous so they eat dead leaves, planarians, and bottom crap in addition to the flake staple. This is why I keep one per tank. Think of it like a big ass betta. They are cousins.
I live in Brisbane, Australia, and I currently have 3 blue gouramis being kept in a 2000K fish pond. They're really active and colourful. The only male has become the largest of the 3 and is very aggressive (he won't stop harrassing the females if they don't hide). He seems to regard the enitre pond to be his territory. Since I'm moving house, I'm wondering if the male would be a problem as I'm considering moving them into a 300L tank. I'd appreciate any suggestions and reccommendations.
@jordahfishing . No. The water is totally different. With africans your want hard water and high ph and maybe a little salt. Gourami likes acidic and soft water. They will thrive and even breen under these conditions. Use Peat moss/pellets in your filter or just heavily stock your aquarium with plants. As leaves die off they will rot and produce low ph. This sounds gross but it's really ok. They call it Humus.
The blue gourami that I had did not get along with the yellow/gold gourami. They were constantly fighting with each other. Remember, the Gourami can be a very agressive fish, and if you notice that one of the smaller fish is being harassed, make sure you remove it immediately or they will eventually kill the fish.
@sarcasticbuddy14 I know exactly what you mean! I bought two blue and one gold for my mom and my goodness the gold one never had a chance. I believe the blue ones gave it a heart-attack from terrorizing it too death! Poor thing...they really should tell customers that at the pet store before we purchase "like hey this fish will kill that fish", but I guess not...at the pet store they seemed fine in the tank together, but once I got them home in my tank which is larger, it was another story.
@sarcasticbuddy14 no offence but that be a problem with YOUR fish because i have many different fish with my male gouramis and they get on fine.... i think it is all to do with personality of the fish you own and the space and decoration and food in the tank :P
@PoseidonSimons I have 2 blue gouramis and 2 gold gouramis, at first they were fighting to the death, but I dept scaring the crap out of them if they did fight, now they get along really well.
a have a blue gourami and HAD a neon dwarf gourami but the blue attacked the dwarf so much that it couldn't swim so i had to put it down. I dont think it was a territorial issue but it could have been. I asked my lfs and they said it is probably just a jerk of a fish. its living with one phantom glass cat now and they seem to get along fine so i really dont know.
i have one of these gouramis and another white one i was wondering if i introduce some neons into the tank what do you think will happen please reply will they be breakfast or will the get along please reply
Yes you can. But what you have to take in concern is size and decor as you said. Together its like dwarf puffers they need theyre space. I have been keeping gouramis for 7 years, trust me sometimes they get along great and sometimes they fight till the death.
i have 2 of them in my aquarium just got them a couple of days ago and one is substantially bigger than the other and it chases the smaller one sometimes
No it's a territorial issue, such as i used to have 2 blue gouramis and 2 dwarf gouramis in a tank o fthe appropriate size, there was allot of fin nipping. Blue gouramis are know as fish "bullies"
I love blue gouramis. Golds are pretty too, but so much more temperamental. I did have a gold/blue mate with my blue girl and the babies were very interesting. Some green with irregular, black spots--I called them the army fish--but the majority were purple with perfectly normal spots. They were all darling.
I have to agree. Very pretty but tough fish, and they live a long time. One of my first fish as a child was a Blue Gourami named Dot. He lived for 7 years and remains my favourite fish to this day, almost ten years later.
The only problem with blue Gouramis is that the males can sometimes be quite aggressive. Mine killed at least 5 other fish!
yeah they are fairly tough...I have managed to keep my gold gouramis with south american cichlids for years now..with no problem of course there is a usual chase here and there but no harm done..allot of begginers do the mistake of getting a pair of these for their tank usually the bigger one kills the smaller one..but when kept with cichlids they calm down and will be ok..

actually, you can have more than 1 together if:
- the tank is large enought ( 50G + )
- 1 male per 2 females
