  • he looks annoyed at the end.

  • @LetsGetHighOnMorris he's generally known to be an asshole. good ass drummer, but an asshole.

  • Glad he left Coheed, i personally think he's too talented for them.

  • This would make a book or dvd. Does anyone know any lessons for stuff like this?

  • well if you'd stop trying to impress people you might actually be able to teach something dude

  • hey, i thought i invented that!

  • ... and now he's with Coheed... grrrr

  • not fair

  • yah just yah know. Then you just and .. right?

  • lol i love the little hand gesture at the end. "see? no big deal"

  • The worst ego lol

  • (sigh) No, Chris, I don't know at all about what you are suggesting. I was actually hoping you would explain it instead of making me feel like a terrible excuse of a drummer.

  • so u can do .. *TRRRRRRRRPRRPRRRRRRPAPAPAPAPAPTRRTRTRTRKAKAKAKAKAKAKATSTSTSTSTSSTCHCHCHCHBRRRRRRRTRRRPAPAPAPAAP* alright?

  • MOST UNDERRATED AND UNDER APPRECIATED DRUMMER EVER

  • @FathomThePower NOT, not even on the same planet - most under appreciated drummer of all time is Papa Jo Jones. The originator of open hi hat accents, ride cymbal as a time keeper, and the concept of the bass drum on beat 1 of jazz music. You dont even know it, but you grew up hearing his playing your whole life, but you didnt know it was him playing.

  • @rwoods2k

ha, i just watched an old video of Jones, man is he ever good.

I see why people don't know him anymore, the jazz and the black talent goes vastly unappreciated. Pennie is a rock drummer though, and he is better than Travis Barker, Mike Portnoy, Joey Jordison, and most other present day figures. He helped invent Dillinger Escape Plan, and who is ever gonna remember that band?

  • @FathomThePower haha it's not that hard to be better than travis barker, he just plays with a lot more emotion than other people.

  • @sierramister123 Not even emotion, just raw power. lol

  • @rwoods2k Kenny Clarke is up there too, being that he was the first to do snare/bass accents and created a huge vocabulary of jazz fills, which all modern drummers have been influenced by...

  • the precision and feeling (groove) of chris pennie is amazing!! Guys can you go to my drum videos and give me some advice? Im just starting and i dont know how to improve other than practice :(

  • *crazy scattered beats, so just do that.. alright? like its an ac dc drum beat or something.

  • Linear drummers seem to not mind playing an open hi-hat along with one of the main voices tho.

I made some objects in max that deal with taking many single, flat streams, triggering drum sounds (polyrhythmically, like a snare every 8 steps, bass every 7), and when two triggers occur, there is a prioritizing that takes place and only one voice is heard. This really helps mask the polyrhythm background when a bass and snare would play at the same time. I think aphex does this much, sounds like

  • ....right

  • it seems like he's doing paradiddles but instead of playing them only with his hands, he is playing each stroke with different limbs

  • that's the idea

  • sloooow down I wanna see how to play it ! ;p

  • lol hes like "so you can just do..*playing amazing shit*... alright?"

  • @herbivore007 alright kids for our next excercise a simple little warm up....lol

  • @herbivore007 It's really that simple.

  • "Alright?"

    Nice one, Chris.

  • Those combos are just unbelievable.

  • Good chops dude..

  • Linear drumming is basically no superimposition of beats. Linear means flat, as all the notes are played in consequential fashon. To me it's more of a conceptual idea, another beautiful way to quantize time.

  • I don't get what linear drumming is, like what makes it up??

  • It's only hitting one drum at a time.

  • One drum, and one cymbal at a time? Or can you overlay drums and cymbals?

  • check out mike clark headhunters and you will get a lesson on linear drumming. It can be soooo funky.

  • Linear means no two "voices" of the instrument played at the same time all notes should be played in a strait line . I just learned this cool Steve Gadd lick that is linear check it...FLLRRLLFRLLRRLLF. Some guy posted it as Steve Gadd linear 32nds you should check it out its very helpful and SUPER COOL.

  • whats the point? its shit I can do that LISTEN to Clyde Stubblefield or Frank Beard for a Hard rock feel and check out Gary Chaffee for some real grooving ideas

  • I swear, for the first time I think it's possible to do DnB with a live drummer...

  • Check out KJ Sawka!

  • Sawka's been doing it for a while now.

  • 0:19 is sweet

  • I love how he just goes "alright?" at the end.

"Sorry mate, didn't get a bit of that"

  • don't get me wrong though, this drummer fucking RULES 43% burnt.. weekend sex change.. I have a tendency to present slightly antagonistic comments. I wouldn't be looking at this video had I not aspired to be anything about Chris to begin with... so glad he's here.

  • just practice linear drumming for like a month straight... I've been practicing it for a few hours a day when I can and it just unavoidably soaks in. There is a certain non-humbleness to being 'humble' when presenting something that one knows is advanced.

  • like I said that's just what I read, im sure he contributed lot's. He probably wrote like all of the old stuff, clip the aphex is a drumming masterpiece, hell the whole calculating infinity album is

  • Corrr man, I've not heard linear playing played to that speed before. Obviously others can do it just as fast but I've probably not actually managed to recognise it as linear drumming before

  • Noob question: What does linear mean?

  • Linear means that there is only 1 hit at a time, compared to an actual beat where you might hit the hi-hat and bass at the same time. linear beats slowed down sounds completely simple but when sped up like this it sounds sick.

  • Ok, i think i understand. Thanks!

  • All right, Sabian or Zildjian? I generally favor Zildjian, but Pennie uses Sabian...

  • masterwork

  • This directly goes in Dream Theather's ass!!!

  • LOL i love how he plays all that

and at the end, he's just like, "alright?"

  • i wish i had those hi-hats....oohh soo crispy

  • And the snare. Its so...you know, just..."Beat". Not like a crappy snare thats all sorta "BEATTTtttt..." and makes he rest of the kit vibrate and sound really shit.

  • hahaha. yeah i know what you mean, but there isn't a snare out there that doesn't make a little bit of ring when tuned well. i think its the camera that is giving it that crisp sound. sure the snare sounds great, but im sure there's some ring and vibration in there

  • aaa, he owns us ALL... T_T

  • i want to learn that

  • this made me shit my pants

  • i started to learn linear stuff a while ago and i though i was getting good at it..

    Guess not haha.

  • OMFG HOW??????!!!!11

  • Hello man, is really beautiful example of your linear ... but it is not very clear ...

Can you recommend me a book that I can study the linear's fill...

    Thanks and congratulations

  • its like roulette... whats he gonna hit next?

  • they are both good bands, but i think he fits more in dillinger. it's his choice though, and he's fucking awesome.

  • I read that they track all the drums on a computer then chris learns them when they write dillinger, he probably didnt like what it was going to sound like and jumped ship before the recording.

I like gil sharone though too

  • Just by the way Chris looks while he plays I think he writes his beats. It seems like its coming from his mind.

  • it's muscle memory man. practice enough, learn from as many different sides of the practice as you can, and you'll be able to play all the weird shit you hear or come up with.

  • he probably does write a lot of it and has a ton of input

  • chris funking pennies in my ass

holy cracker eats salad with drumsticks

this stuff is mesmerizing wow wow and wow

  • is that supposed to be a compliment?

  • he did say it was mesmerizing.

  • ha true that

  • hahaha! holy fucking shit.... ahahahaha!!!

quote: chris funking pennies in my ass

    ahahaha....

  • Great stuff! Awesome demonstration of linear playing. He's so fast though it's hard to get a handle on what he's actually playing.

  • britishboy's got a point but surely he is just a british boy? being born in 1990 makes you a hypocrite my friend.

  • Im not a big fan of StarMetal, he's a douche. and by looking at the name ... kinda wippy.

he should release the entire clinic video. not just bits and peices.

  • Come on dude, you're being the douche. Alls he said was he doesn't like the snare. Come on, what is your problem? Some of you kids on YouTube are ridiculous..

  • Not a big fan of that snare.

  • chris pennie is so good

  • CHIS PENNIE IS THE COOLEST!!!

  • chris pennie is a fucking genius

  • he's so amazing.

  • Thats unreal. And I agree with aerozeplyn, you should upload the entire clinic. Please do it.

  • yarnboy ... please upload the entire video of this clinic somewhere!

  • cool!!!
