(sigh) No, Chris, I don't know at all about what you are suggesting. I was actually hoping you would explain it instead of making me feel like a terrible excuse of a drummer.
@FathomThePower NOT, not even on the same planet - most under appreciated drummer of all time is Papa Jo Jones. The originator of open hi hat accents, ride cymbal as a time keeper, and the concept of the bass drum on beat 1 of jazz music. You dont even know it, but you grew up hearing his playing your whole life, but you didnt know it was him playing.
ha, i just watched an old video of Jones, man is he ever good.
I see why people don't know him anymore, the jazz and the black talent goes vastly unappreciated. Pennie is a rock drummer though, and he is better than Travis Barker, Mike Portnoy, Joey Jordison, and most other present day figures. He helped invent Dillinger Escape Plan, and who is ever gonna remember that band?
@rwoods2k Kenny Clarke is up there too, being that he was the first to do snare/bass accents and created a huge vocabulary of jazz fills, which all modern drummers have been influenced by...
the precision and feeling (groove) of chris pennie is amazing!! Guys can you go to my drum videos and give me some advice? Im just starting and i dont know how to improve other than practice :(
Linear drummers seem to not mind playing an open hi-hat along with one of the main voices tho.
I made some objects in max that deal with taking many single, flat streams, triggering drum sounds (polyrhythmically, like a snare every 8 steps, bass every 7), and when two triggers occur, there is a prioritizing that takes place and only one voice is heard. This really helps mask the polyrhythm background when a bass and snare would play at the same time. I think aphex does this much, sounds like
Linear drumming is basically no superimposition of beats. Linear means flat, as all the notes are played in consequential fashon. To me it's more of a conceptual idea, another beautiful way to quantize time.
Linear means no two "voices" of the instrument played at the same time all notes should be played in a strait line . I just learned this cool Steve Gadd lick that is linear check it...FLLRRLLFRLLRRLLF. Some guy posted it as Steve Gadd linear 32nds you should check it out its very helpful and SUPER COOL.
whats the point? its shit I can do that LISTEN to Clyde Stubblefield or Frank Beard for a Hard rock feel and check out Gary Chaffee for some real grooving ideas
don't get me wrong though, this drummer fucking RULES 43% burnt.. weekend sex change.. I have a tendency to present slightly antagonistic comments. I wouldn't be looking at this video had I not aspired to be anything about Chris to begin with... so glad he's here.
just practice linear drumming for like a month straight... I've been practicing it for a few hours a day when I can and it just unavoidably soaks in. There is a certain non-humbleness to being 'humble' when presenting something that one knows is advanced.
like I said that's just what I read, im sure he contributed lot's. He probably wrote like all of the old stuff, clip the aphex is a drumming masterpiece, hell the whole calculating infinity album is
Corrr man, I've not heard linear playing played to that speed before. Obviously others can do it just as fast but I've probably not actually managed to recognise it as linear drumming before
Linear means that there is only 1 hit at a time, compared to an actual beat where you might hit the hi-hat and bass at the same time. linear beats slowed down sounds completely simple but when sped up like this it sounds sick.
And the snare. Its so...you know, just..."Beat". Not like a crappy snare thats all sorta "BEATTTtttt..." and makes he rest of the kit vibrate and sound really shit.
hahaha. yeah i know what you mean, but there isn't a snare out there that doesn't make a little bit of ring when tuned well. i think its the camera that is giving it that crisp sound. sure the snare sounds great, but im sure there's some ring and vibration in there
I read that they track all the drums on a computer then chris learns them when they write dillinger, he probably didnt like what it was going to sound like and jumped ship before the recording.
it's muscle memory man. practice enough, learn from as many different sides of the practice as you can, and you'll be able to play all the weird shit you hear or come up with.
Come on dude, you're being the douche. Alls he said was he doesn't like the snare. Come on, what is your problem? Some of you kids on YouTube are ridiculous..
he looks annoyed at the end.
