Dogs 101: American Eskimo

We have two dogs -- one is an American Eskimo (Eskie). They're "talky," but we love it. Most of the time, he doesn't bark -- he makes a warbling "roooo!" He's a rescue and not interested in strange people. I understand that it's important to socialize them as puppies. They're great alarm systems. Ours has never snapped at anyone, but he definitely let's you know there's a "STRANGER!"

American Eskimos used to be the guard dogs of Princes and Kings during German times and throughout Europe, so if it carries a bloodline of defensive, can be protective of certain people. they love children and will guard them a lot, however can occasionally get aggresive if the child/person does something it doesn't like. That, and it loves to play.

It's so true when they say that American Eskimos act as puppies when their adults. I adopted mine when he was 7 or 8 years old and he still plays like a puppy and loves to cuddle.

Sadly the eye thing is true too. My eskimo is blind from one eye. We don't know what caused it though.

@117Burn They mean that they are the same breed, but have three different sizes. The toy stays relatively small, the standard is bigger and the miniature is in between.

My American Eskimo, Hurley, is probably the best companion i will ever have. Very intelligent, understanding, & not hyper unless you've just come home. & that only last like 5 minutes.

Our oldest dog is an Eskie, and he's easily the smartest dog we've ever had. We're still amazed at how intelligent he is. He has quite a bark though. It's very irritating. :P

@Dragoondaniel Eskies have smaller, more triangular shaped heads. Their nose is much pointier looking then Sams. Also, Samoyeds have bigger, sturdier legs. The Eskies I've known are extremely bright, easy to learn and they have sassy personalities. Great companion dog!

I had one once, she became my best friend when I was 4. She died when I turned 9 and my heart just experience death as well. We were very close. She was also very friendly. And she had good manners. Even though I didn't train her. All i gave her was love, and I was proud to have her then. :')

Eskies can need a lot of grooming, but when my Kui was still alive I would groom him when I got home from work, It would relax and de-stress me, combing him out layer by layer. He enjoyed it, too!

@OfficialJerla When Kui used to sleep with me, I would have the most restfull night's sleep. I would be on my side and he would sleep in the crook of my knees. Years later I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea (airway closes preventing O2 to your bloodstream). The best position for apnea w/o apnea equipment is to be on your side. With Kui, I didn't roll onto my back (worst position for apnea sufferers). Therefore, with his help I gota good night's sleep.

I used to have one. But then after I got a boxer. You can shave these dogs, mine was standard which was told it was not. But anyways, they are so much fun to have, they can be pale as snow or have some biscuit cream coded colour. If u had to pick a dog, pick this. They are most certainly very, very, very playful and cute!:D

I have a Miniature American Eskimo. He is a great dog, though all American Eskimos are great. If you like medium sized dogs, get a mini. The large size is more like a Samoyed. Toy is probably the size of a pomeranian. My overall suggestion would be a Mini. They are easy to control, and smart.

@ShredderTheBat Peple always thought my standard Eskie was a Sammie puppy. Most standards are about the size of a cocker spaniel (19 inches at the shoulder). Minis are 15 at the shoulder.

@MrMehnumbers I had a standard named Kui and he was such a joy in my life. They are not large dogs but they are very protective and loving. Once I was giving some items to Goodwill. Kui was in the back seat. The attendant leaned in my driver's window and the next thing I know is Kui is on my right side. He was smiling but if he could talk he would have told the attendant, "You are too close to her. Back off.".

@chloenicolehsu8 It's true, they are similar. However, Samoyeds tend to be larger and they have an up turned mouth like a smile. A Samoyed is much harder to train. Not to mention the American Eskimo can handle warmer temperatures than a Sammy. One other difference is the brown fur around the eyes of the American Eskimo. You don't see that as much on a Sammy.

@WonderBear727 One way is that Samoyeds are bigger than Eskimos. I also noticed that American Eskimos also have a pointier snout; it seems to stick out more, while with Samoyeds, their noses seem more pushed in. Though it's not pushed in, but it doesn't seem as long and as pointy. They do look very similar otherwise; both very georgious, but I think their temperaments are extremely different. Both great dogs, but I Eskimos seem more hyper while Samoyeds seem more layed back; in general at least.

a few years ago my dog was tied up to a tree by a careless abusive owner and left there for days... his ears were all bloody and raw! he was an american eskimo..less than a year old then The american eskimo rescue sanctuary of iowa came along and saved him. If you want this breed you have to know that it barks a lot. It's very protective and barks at strangers at the door. I have 2 and they get annoying when ever the bell rings but besides all that they are one of a kind and the best cuddle buddy ever.! I love my ekies. They will love you forever and love showing it :3

@themaiasaura Well, maybe they weren't correct. Because I happen to have a UKC Standard American Eskimo (apx 30lbs). A pure bred has 3 size definitions. They can also have color variations, ranging from white white, to a "biscuit" white". Also, the inner ear color can be either pinkish to black. They are so very family orientated & precious. My Bianca is my baby, but don't tell my grown kids she's more spoiled than them! lol!

Eskies are the best dogs ever. They are the only breed that has a behavior named after them. My Sassy Belle gave the best Eskie Hugs ever, I had her for 12 years before I had to have her put down, I miss my little girl to this day.
