The swedish defence plan was after 1952 after the swedish dc-3 did got shootdown they took atleast 50-60 air mission each day and hade 30 fighters around sweden ready to start and engage hostile/unknown aircraft/flying objects.
The swedish pilots did go in on soviet borders (closest ever was 2.5 miles from estland). If any soviet or non allied aircraft did come in our airspace we did give them 1-2 warnings if they didnt respond we engage and nock out the object
Yes, the swedish cold war fighters were designed to land on streets, the viggen can also reverse (don´t know if it´s that usual today..) The planes were also hidden in the forest and there were also underground airbases, so that the soviets didnt know where we were! we also did this with our naval bases...
The Tunnan was the best jet in the world because it was a copy of the German jet Focke-Wulf Fw "Super TL". Every one of the fighters and bombers used today by America, Russia, Britain, Sweden and so on were all copied from German designs in WWII. Even the American B-2 Spirit is a remake of the German Horton 229 bomber. If it wasn't for Germany, the world would still be struggling along in bi-planes.
@1889SSWolf You are totally right. Couldn´t agree with you more. Yes the Tunna was almost a rip off of Kurt Tanks Focke Wulf TA-153. Greetings from Dänemark!
draken isn't a sweet old lady but a nasty mean old man LOL :) it's just too mean looking for the air forces of the world to tolerate, what with the sweet looking airplanes they have designed :)
Does anyone know if there were ever any "unofficial" arial engagements between the Swedish AF and the USSR's piece of crap MiG's? There had to have been airspace violations from time to time. The only "official" combat action that the Swedish AF has, to my knowledge, is in The Congo in the early 1960's alongside the Indian AF's famous Canberra bombers. I forget what planes were used [by Sweden] in that action, though, without looking it up. I think one is still on display somewhere, though.
Call it a coincidence, but it seems every slanderous remark aimed at Russia comes from a citizen of the US, your age particularly. A bit of red fear still there? Lingering anti-USSR propaganda from the Cold War? Do your research, you'll find that the Su and MiG aircraft lines are very competitive with western aircraft. The Su-27 and derivatives has performed favourably against the F-15 and Eurofighter, whilst Germany's previous MiG-29's more than proved themselves against Swiss F/A-18s.
(in case this appears somewhere else its to the "Today it happens about ones a month that the air force locks at foreign fighters, not just Russians." comment by smorgasbord3
There is actually a well known story in Sweden that one pilot (most likely flying a Viggen) succeed to lock a missile at an American SR 71 Blackbird. This by climb up with his fighter to a very high attitude, actually he was forced to shut down the engine because lack of oxygen. However he restarted the engine and flow straight down against the much faster Blackbird and was able to lock on to it. Of course because it was a friendly aircraft firing was never considered.
Swedish J-29 Tunnans engaged one enemy aircraft in the air over Congo, it took damage but disappeared into clouds. Later it was found crashed on the ground with evidence of severe damage in the tail section from cannon fire.
Swedish Viggens have had several know engagements with Migs over the Baltic. One of the most well known are when a Mig-29 chased a Viggen but could not keep up in the tight turns so it crashed in to the sea.
Tunnan - at the time probably the best plane in the world. If youre swedish check out Svt's site programs, there is an episode on that and on the secret military bases where an underground complex would spit out 1 Tunnan per day!!
I'm in love with this plane. and her sister AJ37 Viggen! Real Swedish angels, once wings of our nation!
