  • what steinberger model guitar is that? (Great video by the way)

  • Great guitarist, but I fucking hate jazz fusion. It makes me want to shit my own leg off.

  • @MrFrothinger

that's because you dont understand it !!!!

  • @algrand90 - yeah - that's exactly it. Too inaccessible.

  • What tune he use?

  • He looks down on the guitar and his like "oh, thats right, im so pleased with myself". Well, he obv got reason for that.

  • I hate to say it, 'cause this guy has great chops and obviously has spent a lot of time perfecting this approach, but there is not a melody in sight. His playing is based, IMHO, on the shapes on the fretboard and not melodic phrases to fit the changes. Contrast with Frank Gambale, for example, or Eric Johnson, whose every phrase is a melody in itself.

  • I suppose I can understand the haters on here, complaining about all the scale runs...but it is just a demonstration. The man has liquid control, period.

  • @Steven4466 totally agree .....boring as hell nothing about contrast jsut scales and some patterns up and down

  • is he terribly influenced by Holsdworth or what? he's amazing too

  • Wow I never knew Charlie Sheen was an awesome guitarist!

  • @CYCLOPSONE LOL

  • @CYCLOPSONE DAMN you sure called his number! lol

  • @mxmontiel You know I meant nothing mean by that though right?

Not only is he an awesome guitarist but an awesome person also.

  • @CYCLOPSONE you're right hes an awesome guitarist and an awesome person... and he looks like charlie sheen :P

  • fucking amazing ... too much reverb tho...

  • I'm sorry there is no rhythmic or harmonic diversity in this playing (the perpetual motion principle) as you walk out of the club you can't remember a single melody (melodic avoidance ).

  • It's silly how people seem to judge a guitarist's WHOLE ability to play from just one clip. He's excellent....and I'll bet you if he can play with this dexterity, he can easily play many other styles of music if he wants to. The goal of music is to achieve the skill where you can play what you first hear within your heart and mind and soul. I'm not convinced that all Derryl hears is fusion.

  • So don't watch it then, Derryl is an awesome player and teacher, I have all of his videos; I know this! It's good to listen to everything and take it all in as it expands your ear and brain, whether you'll ever be able to use it all doesn't matter; just open your mind...

  • This kind of guitar playing does NOTHING for me

  • So many notes.. so little to say...

  • what scales is he using? sounds like holdsworth, a lot of chormatic stuff

  • a side of guitar i wish I could get a grasp on playing wise, always inspiring to watch your videos.

  • has obv. digested the Holdsworth stuff

  • There is already an Allan Holdsworth haha, no really, awesome Legato!

  • I'd like to see a vid of this guy playing w/a live band. He can definitely play but it does sound "soul-less" probably due to the band-in-a-box backing track.

  • He's good, but he's not an artist..

  • technically good, but he should stop trying to add facials to look like hes putting soul into his music. There is no soul in this, to me he just sounds like a less experienced less original version of Alan Holdsworth.

  • his technique reminds me of allan holdsworth (also the headless guitar!)

  • sorry...where is phrasing? it`s like trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr la la la trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr lala )))

  • Derry Gabel is THE man, go buy his DVDs

  • bello ma..che sonno!

  • Wake up siesmik, all you people who know blues licks and how to play a major scale up and down real quick probably don't and won't get it because it's too much for your poor little brains. In order to have an opinion you must first have an open mind and realise that there are 12 notes, not just 7. I'm about to look at your channel and see what you listen to, I hope it's good... By the way it's an instructional video not a proper performance...

  • @MrOrmus777 This guys fucking right! Derry can play his ass off. Great tone, extremely melodic, fluid passages, inventive phrasing. lots of soul. Hey, great taste isn't for everybody, some people simply prefer shallower waters. This takes you out to the ocean depths, for swimmers who can go the distance only.

  • 1: Dry and overly intellectual / no soul? That's jazz, but also just because there's no bends or shrills doesn't mean there's no emotion or feeling.

2: Not original? This is a demo of common (and not so common) techniques used in jazz, so it's not intended to be cutting edge original improvisation.

3: Satriani and Keaggy? Their genres are very different and have a different feel and style.

So get out of your metal head slum and don't bash good musicianship.

  • @siesmik123 Interesting point of view. I think we know about Joe Satriani, Phil Keaggy already so I see any need any name checks. Now if you know of an under ground player we need to look at then that would be different and the two players are seeking success folowing a more commercial route to their playing. In addition this is not a song, rather a demonstration track for the techniques covered on his lessons DVD.

  • @lauriemonk Here here, and bravo, laurie! I couldn't agree more! Derryl is a captivating musician, and quite a nice fellow at that. I hope he doesn't get discouraged by such judgmental ones as siesmik123. I pray the Lord uplift Derryl's spirits and bless him even more than he has already.

    Hypnus9

PS...you are to be commended for what you do here on YouTube, Laurie. With your efforts, I have really improved as a musician. God bless you, too.

  • @siesmik123 You consider yourself a connoisseur then (he has no art in him huh...)? Could you should transcribe the line and post it for us since you know that he's using the same scale patterns and jazz anticipations?

  • @siesmik123 I could happily murder you without remorse

  • @OpulenceOfKnowledge Ah, but it is written, "You shall not murder," not that I agree with siesmik123.

  • @siesmik123 Dude you have no idea what your talking about here.

  • @siesmik123 Too complex for you? Know problem. Listen to Phil Collins.

  • @janecroft :)

  • Derryl is a monster, a cool person and an excelent teacher!

  • this guys is a pro, man my city sux, every1 in my city doesnt know wat music is, i bet if this expert guy come to my city they wouldnt like it

  • hey look it's charlie sheen

  • This may be too "dry", "clinical", or "cerebral" for some people. I like music that's a little dry. People say the same things about Lennie Tristano and Art Tatum, but I stil love their music.

  • His sound is too warm, too rounded, and not harmonic enough for me to enjoy. My enjoyment comes from being able to hear each mistake and each success in playing, which can't be heard with such a rounded tone.

I see what Steven4466 meant when he said he enjoyed it, but that it seemed like "Music while you Crap"

  • very nice improvisation!!!

  • Great speed, accuracy, flexibility with the lines, tone, harmonic knowledge and all that stuff. But you know what I don't like about this kind of playing? The "flatness". Same thing with Holdsworth and SRV. With these guys the band works like a pre-recorded backing track for the soloist to improvise over it whick makes for a extremely boring song. I guess that's why Holdsworth seems always better when in someone else's band, he steps away from his rather challeging I must say box.

  • I must admit, I don't get that at all, I always find that Derryl's playing has that repeated listening quality, similar to Holdsworth... it takes me a number of passes to get it... I love the phrasing.

  • @lauriemonk I agree that his phrasing is amazing, but Steven is probably responding to the rather tepid backing track-it has that "fusac" sound. It would be great to here Derryl play with a real band.

  • @lauriemonk its because some of us ve taken that passes . we dont like this. i agree steven4466

  • @lauriemonk

i betcha it's because these guys are so far ahead of us because of their vast knowledge of theory that we won't get it at the first time we hear it. Sometimes great artists take awhile to get used to. It's kinda like admiring a picture for a long time then you understand the aspects of it but yet you learn something new every time you observe it.

  • @shadowknight132 yes, I think very much so. Like Allan Holdsworth to me... took a while... but once I got it... it was like someone turned a light on. The "getting it" was most exciting aspect!

  • @lauriemonk same here man, i listened to Holdsworth at first and thought it was crap but then it grew into me, i finally understood this kind of music and it's really not shitty like everyone tells me...

  • @Blade15 it was like someone turned a light on!

  • I agree with the never ending scales and patterns. I don't find a whole lot of music in this BUT I'm sure everyone can learn something out of this video.

We all tend to disregard the positives on one's playing but if we learn from the positives and disregard the negatives, it'll make our own playing better.

Can you imagine the time he put into practicing at those speed? Give credit where it's due man.

  • where can i find tabs like this song? i like the way you advance using the scales, looks hard.. sorry my english plz

  • he even looks like hes from florida

  • yes... Gulf Breeze

  • yes I like d the amazing haircut too

  • This is astounding!!!!!!

  • what guitar is?

  • A steinberger, I think its the new model they just released

  • That's one freakily long little finger. Is it my imagination or is it realy as long as his index finger!

  • Allan Holdsworth lite

  • totally

  • if by lite you mean less experimental and closer to actually SOUNDING like a guitarist I agree.

  • Derryl Gabel the fusion you can eat between meals...

  • haha yeah kinda... technical easy listening xD

  • Charlie Harper

  • DUDE exactly what I thought :D

  • I may be calling down the wrath of YouTuber's for this, but my criticism on Derryl:

Obviously the guy has amazing talent. But what I take from THIS video is that he could spend more time on developing picking and vibrato dynamics and less on his monster legato. Could you imagine if he got as good with the feel as with the legato. Wow that would be madness.

But again, that is only from this ONE video. I have not heard any of his solo stuff . Regardless he is worthy of respect fo SHO!

  • I think you might have that view, but it misses the point of the legato fusion style. If you added that kind of technique to this track, you would end up with rock fusion track, which, IMO, is not where Derryl wants to get to... but is, none the less, an exciting form of guitar playing.

I think if you study the video in more detail he adds a lot of emotion to the track, breathing, subtle bending and subtle vibrato. Note also this video represents the techniques taught in this video. Agree?

  • Laurie, you nailed it. here. this is ONE vid, with the purpose of showing legato technique. I study with Derryl, and his command of the guitar is very inspiring.

His passion is never missing. And in seeing Allen H. several times, Derryl is well on his way to reaching that flawless Technique Allen and a select few have progressed to...

    Great Work Derryl!

  • Lucky guy! I love Derryl's playing and it's a style that is my favourite. I particularly like Derryl's melodies.

  • @stratakat I played guitar for Holdsworth, & i will say, this guys right up there in his phrasing, feel & technique.I don't care what anybody says, I know talent when I hear it, & Derry's got it in spades.

  • I can imagine. His name is Guthrie Govan.

  • @guitarcrazy019 Exactly. We could use more Govan.

  • this guy is amazing

  • Fusion + Steinbergers = win.

  • sounds alot like allen holdsworth. I love artists who embrace dissonances and use them to their advantage. thanks for the video !

  • Yes, I could listen to stuff like this all day. His CD is amazing a lot of depth.. I always enjoy listening to the tracks.

  • ah! meandering bullshit played over a disco karaoke background. i detect no depth of expression nor harmonic explorations of any worth. really unimpressive.

  • you music videos are little light to feedbcak on... care to post your impressive deep musical harmonic explorations for comment?

  • I dont know he has a point,it does meander a fair bit but he knuckles down just before the 5min mark for sweet phrasing.Realy good player,I think most guitarists would love his chops:)

  • that's the goal,,, You play just the extensions of chords.. 9th 11th and the 13th.. even the 7th''.. it sounds out and yet it's very much in the chord harmony. scales are generic sounding,,, it's the chords that create the texture of a song..

  • It's partly subjective, but it's a stretch to call the unaltered extensions "out". "Outside" usually means playing ideas and tonalities that really challenge the listener with tensions, like rubbing an A major scale against a Bb minor chord, which would give you the Major 7 against the minor 7, both the b9 and #9 the Major 3rd against the minor 3rd, and both the b5 and #5. Now that's "outside"! Of course, most players resolve to inside sounds for release.

  • Clearly you can't make your living as a detective. If being a troll and an asshole were in demand you could make a killing.

  • LOL... classic

  • him and marshall harrison are the closest thing to shawn lane we'll ever have no one tops the terrifying combination of legato and wide intervals with beautiful melodies like shawn did. guthrie govans a great fusion dude too however insane skills

  • Well, I think it's impressive.

As similar as it is to Holdsworth, its.. very different.

The lines are constructed totally different than Holdsworth would have done it, and I applaud that Derryl. Great stuff man.

  • lol

  • This is FUCKING BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!! JUST FUCK OFF AND LISTEN TO DEREK TRUCKS

  • Thank you for your deep musical insight.

  • Yes thank you for the deep thought liasereth. By deep, I mean you have your head so deep up your ass it would take a team of proctologists with crowbars to remove it.

  • LOL... you made my day!

  • Thanks for saying so, and I agree with everything you said above about Derryl's playing; he kicks ass, but did I interpret you correctly that John McLaughlin and John Scofield put you to sleep? If so, I think you should give them another listen when you've had more rest; Sco is great, and McLaughlin is totally mind blowing; Holdsworth and he are a mutual admiration society, and rightly so imo. Maybe you didn't mean it the way it sounded to me, though. Shakti kicks my ass every tune!

  • I do like Scofield and more particularly John McLaughlin.. I think I was trying to be funny... Obviously you are much better at that aspect then me. Allan Holdsworth remains my number one player. I think Derryl is superb too. I love his solo work.

  • I thought I might be taking your remark a bit too seriously, and I'm glad you were kidding. I imagine we like much of the same music, and it's always great to see that! For me, Holdsworth and McLaughlin are constant sources of inspiration. I'm really glad to have found Derryl, and when I can afford to, I'll invest in his entire course with his book and videos; I'm very excited about that! I can't imagine why people want to insult Derryl for not being Holdsworth or McLaughlin!

  • i know it's technical and fast but to me this just sounds really dull. it's all style and no substance.

(if you're wondering why i'm here Claude Johnson guitar tips pointed me to this guy today and i'm checking him out.)

  • I agree. And if you want to hear this kind of playing, but with feel and and bit of an edge you should check out early Alan Holdsworth, whom this guy has quite obviously got 95% of his stuff from...

  • I think you'll find Allan uses a completely different system to that Derryl's been working on over the years. I love all Allan Holdsworth stuff too... this track is a demo of the techniques covered in the DVD. IMO If your a fan of fusion playing you got to love it, I's love to be able to play like that.

  • lol.. me too

  • anybody know what guitar is that?

  • Steinberger USA GM-4S ... you can see it on his gear page on his web site.

  • vito bratta was the first guy i ever saw use one of these guitars

  • Tanks laurie !!

    you are the best :D

  • Phenomenal player, I could listen to this type of playing for days!

  • I like this very much. There is variety in the phrasing, it follows the chords very clearly, it has drama, and of course the speed is awesome.

  • this guy is more old-school, like holdsworth and gambale

    i love the music

  • Don;t know what to think... I;m surfing thru this guy videos but I haven't find something that amkes me say: Whoa! First time I head Guthire Govan (I'm not comparing) I simply cpuldn't believe it, what an amazing guitar player he was (well, he is).

  • It's hard to be creative when the background is so static. In a real fusion band, the drummer interacts with the soloist and comments on what he does. For that matter, the keyboard, vibes, or guitar try to comp around what the soloist is playing. I'd like to hear Derryl in the context of a real band. I bet he's great...

  • dont like the guitar but it sounds pretty good

  • Dist this up and put it in a metal song... would sound better!

  • then why don't i see a million players doing what Derryl does. He puts in the time & it shows, you just put down & it shows too.

  • hi derryl!I was waching your videos...you are really great...great sound and phrasing...your're relaxed on your guitar but you've great and functional technique and also a great musicality...Awesome musician!

  • Actually he is quite the only cool shredder who makes music ! Not just playing fast, but very creative licks and grat sensitivity. But maybe you also think Holdsworth is boring :-) In this case, you're lost my friend.

    Peace

  • Ni una triste frase. Es todo y nada a la vez.

Mucha habilidad y para tan poca creatividad.

  • They are good, plus you get the power tab and lots of ideas to work on, check out youtube derrylgabel for more samples of the types of footage you get.

  • >Go listen to some John Scofield or John >Mclaughlin

I did I fell asleep... LOL

  • boring....this is not music, is just tecnike..

  • if this was just tecnique all you would here is one excersise after another and this is not that. this is different groupings of notes different intervals different phrasing if you can't see the music in this then your clearly no musician or no real fan of music. i find it annoying when people have no respect for good music and give it a lable like "technique" music is alot more than technique, technique is what you can play music is how you make phrasing with it and play what you feel.

  • I love Derryls work... I find the music grows on you as well. So repeated listenings bring out more melodies for me.

  • yeee i love listening to something that is "outside" and this is definatelly outside but if you want to go crazy allan holdsworth is the man when it comes to really training your ears for different scales chords and voicings. a bit nerdy people would say but itsfun rather than listening to a song with three chords anda repeating melody, this music is great forver changing and always surprising.

  • Yes, that's what did it for me... it's like Allan Holdsworth was the Rosetta stone... once I understood him, it was if I could listen to and hear more more music than ever before of this genre. For sure, for me if you get Holdsworth then this type of music becomes magical.

  • yes excatly when you get used to listening to holdsworth and other fusion music you really do develop an ear for this as you said, magical genre.

i think people should not frown at this sort of music because the best things in life take the longest to get used to.

  • very nice job dude!

congratulation you are not one of the tipical guitarplayers who think their gonna impress whit just speed, im sick of them, i hope theres more guitarplayers like you.

By the way cool guitar, it remind me my master allan holdsworth

  • At 2:00 he almost put himself to sleep.

  • Awesome!

  • great sound derryl!!!you're my favourite contemporary fusion guitarist! What kind of material do you use?

  • Hi Ignazio... I don't understand the question? Let me know and I'll pass it on to Derryl

  • Ignazio, I appreciate your compliment but I feel your as good if not better than me my friend : )

  • The guitar has really come a long way as a single note solo instrument. As much as I admire things like this, Holdsworth, and Gambale, I tend to go to the source and listen to Joe Henderson, Joe Farrell, and especially Michael Brecker. In addition to cool intervals and arpeggios, those guys groove really hard and have a much wider dynamic range.

  • Joe Henderson, Joe Farrell, and Michael Brecker, were not the source.

Mick told me his source was

    Charlie Parker,

And before you ask, just go to my website link from YouTube and you will see a picture of me playing with Peter Erskine

from "WheatherReport" and "Steps Ahead" and as you probably know Mike was the founder of Steps Ahead along wit Mike Marini, we all talked and partied at the Pori jazz festival in Finland many times.

    Johnny Guitar Carson

  • hehe i think his guitar is missing a bit on the top...

  • Nice Jam! Thanks!

  • Bueno el compadre, de la escuela de Allan Holdsworth sin duda.

  • newthings158 I get so tired of listening to the critic standing and making negative comments over on the sideline if you can do better why don't you post up you playing guitar behind this backing track and let's see how good you are.I think this guy has a very good feel flowing along with this song

  • yeah, sometimes I go hard on people, sorry, all due respect...I would definitely take many lessons from this guy, I guess it's just that when I hear music today I get the feeling that people really play it safe, I would sometimes, many times, rather hear someone who is really on edge. I'm an old Mahavishnu fan, and they were REALLY on edge. Also, people have a right to their opinions, I hope I wasn't really rude though, sorry if I was...

  • Derryl is Great

  • is he human?

  • Man, you are top notch dude! Only in my dreams could I ever play like that.

  • thats my dad ! :D

  • heavy inluenced by Holdsworth!! maybe to much.

  • Yeah i agree, although he doesn't have the tasty phrase writing ability orunique chord voivings Allan has.

Derryl is an excellent player, but he's a Holdsworth wannabe let's face it.

That Steinberger guitar is so fugly, only people trying to be Allan would use 1. Lol.

  • There's only one Holdsworth, but if you're going to emulate someone, pick the best. Holdsworth has influenced an entire generation (or two) of guitar players who probably wouldn't be as technically adept if they didn't try to copy him. I know I'm a MUCH better player just by trying to copy what Allan does. Derryl is really good. You're right about the chord work and the phrasing, but then that's why Holdsworth is the man.

  • SUPERB!!!

  • I love his effortless touch. Sure wish the sound was a bit better. Cool setting with the Black Background...

Great Playing... Smooth transitions through the changes...

Allan is a true gentalman... and a huge influence on most of us players...

I see the influence on Derryl... but he does his own thing with it... Very Cool Clip.

  • Excellent performance, very best guitarrist

    All the best

  • "It's like looking in the mirror." Allan Holdsworth talking about Derryl Gabel

  • Was a compliment what I said!

  • Reminds me Alan Holdsworth
