Congratulations, great work. I used to do portraits with a Bic maybe 10 or 15 years ago (yes, I'm old) but then I discovered colour. Looking at your video I feel like coming back to it. I've got a few Bic's around!
Pen blending is not as hard as most of you take it to be, it's ust very tedious, you feather out your strokes, and the lighter you pull the lighter the line, the harder you push the darker the line, it just takes a crap ton of patience
i'm not necessarily calling this fake but i am skeptical as to how he made the background solid black and did the rest too with only one pen.i don't doubt that this was all done in pen but it seems like with all the solid black in this drawing, it would take 2 or 3 pens. that's just my 2 cents
@ishouldplayzelda It can be done. I had a friend in school that did this and showed me how and we both drew using these pens. I believe he's not showing a great deal of smudging that happens and NO this isn't one pen being used. You can get a lot of shading with these juicy pens just by getting a lot of ink down and then using your finger and smudging down to white. He might have another technique though. This was 30 years ago I did this. FYI! The art isn't permanent however.
@DaveReyes342 No reason to be. How do you arrive at that false correlation? In 90 hours, you could produce a significant portion of an original work, all of an original work, or several original works.
@JeffersonDinedAlone BiC paid the artist and probably bought his drawing how is that a waste of 'initially useful' time? Because its not an original? Go to James' channel for some original works you hastey ignorant fool. Also you claim to practice realism in your home studio? I doubt you even realise what realism is, and if you do and practice it well then I would argue THAT is a waste of time as your living your life through a history book and that your work is irrelevant.
What a great eye this artist has to see all of the shadings and nuances of this painting and to be able to recreate them. All I can get out of a Bic is a crude line drawing or some goofy words in a notebook.
@ktgiggle22 Who says that there are no pen strokes? This is a 240p quality video there is no way you could tell if there were crosshatching or not. But blending can be done before the ink dries and with the oil based ink you have a bit of time to blend since the ink will no absorb into the paper quickly like water based ink and it'll dry slower. I do a lot of pen sketching and you can get quite gentle transitions with just cross hatching if you have decent line quality.
@cjhatesu Hi. I'm not cross hatching here. It is entirely done with pen strokes, the strokes are just done close enough to each other to appear as a smooth surface, this is why it takes so long.
The ink in these pens actually dries very very fast, so not possible to blend. If you try you will just get ugly, permanent smudge
@ishouldplayzelda The ink isn't wet like a waterbased ink. It's more like something that would require a solvent to get it to move on paper. Maybe even using isopropyl alcohol. Now you have me interested in wasting my day doing this! :) He'd have to have a heavy paper too so it won't buckle with the amount of pen he's laying down, and if he's using a solvent. No, q-tip would leave strands everywhere.
@arebella1 I don't use solvent. not needed. I'm not 'moving ink', just releasing pressure / lightly touching the surface with the ball. But you are correct that the right paper helps. I use 250gsm bleach white card (flat, smooth paper surface important)
very lightly. it is possible with a ball point pen. extremely hard with a felt tipped pen. i can shade with an old one as they get hard and you can turn it on its edge. it's not a pretty as a ball point pen though.
@bestzohan The fact that you can't do it doesn't mean that no one can do it. I saw a guy make a realistic portrait of someone using paint and two paintbrushes on a 150x150cm canva in less that 5 minutes so I believe everything is possible when we come to art x).
@bestzohan Yes I am, I saw it in front of my eyes, it was an old french man. He gone several times to perform his art at a french show called "Le plus grand cabaret du monde". Once, I even remember seeing him making a portrait as large and realistic but upside down! At first I couldn't figure out what he was drawing but when he turned the canva I couldn't believe my eyes xD! I was in the room, within the time of the Happy Potter Anthem, he painted a portrait of Daniel Radcliffe
@bestzohan And even one time, he painted Charlie Chaplin... while he was behing the canva, he had his hands through it and painted him blind style x'D
@8Maik yes, but digital images can be reproduced over and over making their intrinsic value less than a one off piece that can never be reproduced. Also the finish you get from paint, ink, pencil on quality paper is SO much better that what you can ever get out of a printer....
@jamesMylne yes i know, i'm not saying digital images are bettere, but the opposite. i'm saying that for digital image's fault, real talent is killed.
'Girl With A Pearl Earring' has been a favorite painting for years, and explains who posed for the more famous Mona Lisa, which is a long story for another post. But it is worth looking up if you are curious. The original painting is a masterpiece that exceeds the brilliance of Mona Lisa herself, or is it really her younger self?
I love bic pen drawings! The tones and contrast you can get from a pen will always amaze me. My uncles were amazing at sketching and drawing with them, weird thing is they learned these techniques in prison. Ha ha!!
@Laraischibi I don't think it's jealousy, it's being reasonable. It's just impossible to make such shades with that kind of pen speaking from purely technical point of view.
how does the ink go to places where the pen doesn't even go?? computer trick or weird speeding up where the hand looks slow while several movements are cut out? to me it looks fake. I wish I'm wrong though, so please post a long video without speeding it up. Please
If I had his skills I`d go dancing around the world, probably not having the time to draw anything, because I`d be so happy to be able to draw like this << I now that doesn`t make sense.... whatever, still a truly amazing drawing
