@Rospaint You are not alone!!! Who cares about listening to marvellous notes perfectly sung, when you can have a real interpretation, even if not SO well sung? I love Caballe (also her Don Carlo - nobody succeded in holding the last note like her), but I think Scotto was better... In my opinion, it's like seeing, from the one part Raffaello's works and, from the other side, Michelagelo ones. Both are beautiful, still I prefer the second.
@ginlemon29 I [ike very much your words about Raphael and Michelangelo in this context. For me also - "Michelangelo-type" artists ARE the most preferable.
Commenting on great artists is not easy -- there is always something indefinable and elusive about their magic. Because of that, even if she often took on roles that taxed her wonderful lyrical soprano to its limits, one can forgive Scotto because you KNOW there is something special going on. Callas being the supreme example of this. They go beyond the composers dicates as to tempo, volume etc and start contributing their own great gifts too. Thank God for them -- all of them.
Oh... this was fabulous!... great singing, great interpretation, gestures, acting... everything. I like Renata as awell as Freni or Caballe, Bumbry as well as Troyanos or Verret. All great singers. Don´t understand why people are always comparing big fabulous singers. No... because she does this... No, because the other does that... oh please, live with it!
Say what you want about Scotto...She may not have been one of the best sopranos..but she was one of the most INTERESTING..everything she does here is absolutely at the service of Verdi and Elisabetta...You feel what she feels...and i would rather have a soprano who makes me feel something rather than one that just sang perfect notes..and i guess that was the difference with Scotto..She made you feel opera, not just listen to it..
that's what is ALL ABOUT, if it touches us, our souls..she did her JOB!! I don't care if it sounds sometimes off, or too many breathings or whatever TECHNICALLY...she was absolutely FANTASTIC..her little tripping after the aria was over, like a sing of real weakness in that moment was amazing, I thought she was gonna faint!! WHAT AN ACTRESS!!!
@doperasinger They can say whatever they want. The truth is. Scotto is one of the best sopranos of the 20th century. History says so.... and they... well... who are they?.... a bunch of nobodies!
I like Scotto in some roles, and I don't like her so much in others, but she does Elisabetta absolutely wonderful! So moving, so true, just... just incredible...
I wish DG would have BOTH productions on DVD ... I own the Frani-Bumbry-Domingo version - and I love it - but I would immediately add this one to my collection, too ... BTW - does anybody know how or where to get it (the whole thing, I mean?)
I wish they would release the whole performance on DVD. Except for Scotto, it featured the phenomenal Tatiana Troyanos as Eboli. A few years after this performance was broadcast on TV in the US, the same MET production was broadcast again, but with Freni, Bumbry and Domingo in the leads. Unfortunately, Deutsche Grammophon chose to release the second broadcast on DVD, the one with Freni and Bumbry. Nothing against them, but Scotto and Troyanos are so much more thrilling!

Scotto conveys real vulnerability .
There are other uploads which perhaps offer finer singing but none come close in terms of emotional impact.

Onegin 65 Many thanks!!! Scotto is really a GRAND actress and musician - ALWAYS... So nice to know - so many opera-fans feel the same.
By the way I prefer her to Caballe - maybe I am alone in this feeling...
Best regards

Scotto est magnifique là dedans mais je préfère Caballé à cause de ses pianissimi.

Besides her intense and nuanced singing, her gestures and facial expressions are absolutely credible and dramatic. Great interpretation!

My G. this eye at the begining. She knows the words that she is singing, every thing is nuanced. Great Renata!
