In Behtir’s case. Behlul is disgusted with their relationship and feels guilty for what they had. He wants a clean and fresh start with the girl who truly loves him with pure and honest heart but Behtir can’t see that because she became mentally ill, which is a HUGE proof that what she felt for him was only obsession that led to suicide, not strong but normal love feelings and emotions that normal people have
You’re right about one thing though, it’s a matter of personal taste, Nihal maybe clueless but I’d definitely prefer her to Behtir because cheating, obsessed, cheap and mentally disordered girls are so not my type of character

I'm just going to add one last thing- I believe that love is two-sided. What Nihal is feeling is love indeed but she never admitted to herself that there is another woman in Behlul's heart although she was seeing that he is distant. For god's sake he was like a puppet following orders. He was trying not to disappoint his uncle and make his little cousin Nihal happy.
@Itos247 In order for two people to get marrie they both need to want it. Behlul's heart did not want to marry Nihal....he was forced to choose that option. He loved Bihter till the very end...and their love is the driving force in the whole series. That's just how I see it.

since the first night they spend together on the yacht Behlul started acting like a man falling in love, he wasn’t a puppet anymore, he refused every opportunity Behtir gave him to get out of his engagement, even when Behtir and her mom managed to make Nihal end the engagement and take off her ring, Behlul was so scared and upset and insisted that Nihal hears him out, and when she did he was relieved to give her the ring
he held her tied and told her “Don’t you ever leave me, I feel safe when your with me, we’ll always be together” how can that come out of someone “Forced” ?? And why didn’t he take that chance, or any other chance Behtir gave him to release himself?! Even when Behtir died and he sat by her grave talking to her, he wasn’t regretting ending their relationship and letting her go, but he was regretting starting the relationship in the first place
He did regret what they had and he wanted out of it, and that showed very clearly especially in the last few episodes

He is crying and tells her that he loves her but is so ashamed of himself that he can't even fisnish the sentence. Whe he leaves the rose before he leavse, he calls Bihter "askim"..( "my love" in Turksh).
@Itos247 For me, his monologue in the last episode is the moment when everything going on in his mind is completely revealed. He regrets fooling Nihal and regrets that he didn't stand by Bihter and their love and possibly running away with her. I've seen his "final" speech many many times, so nothing can convince me that the emotion he is conveying is regret for his love for Bihter and their relationship. It's just the opposite.
@Itos247 But you are right...he does love Nihal- as a little sister that is mentally weak (remember her fainting episodes). He protects her like a little sister, especially after she told him that she would die if he leaves..
But I'm glad you are a big fan, Aski memnu is my favorite series; it's a piece of art and has very deep psychology.

My conclusion was that he considered himself responsible for all the hurt, because if he was a man with honor he would have resisted his desires and wouldn’t have seduced and chased after Bihter till she fell for him, wouldn’t have cheated on the man who raised him, wouldn’t have used Nihal to cover for his deeds
and he wouldn’t have caused himself and Bihter to carry that shame that led her to suicide and him to lose everything he had.
