  • Jeremy Pelt is a pure talent!!!

  • very observant!

  • Lol Miles Runs the Voodoo Down Lick at 2:09

  • Why do people miss the point so much? It's all about the MUSIC!!! Wonderful players, thank you.

  • But, I just can't get enough of these guys, even if there off tune!

  • This band has some creepy looking guys! I don't know if these guys got together at their half-way house and just played.

  • "The Ambassador Halfway House and Grille", located near West 3rd and Sullivan in the Village. Great menu, pool tables and a dancing tuna fish that is the talk of the town!!

  • @Bobbelden So Kool! I will check out!

  • I just love this video! No hard feelings to any band member!

  • My autistic cousin is in a Jazz band and gets down on the trumpet. But this guy on trumpet sounds horrible; Jeremy pelt needs to stick to the Triangle you hit with a stick or something!

  • Sorry for the harsh comment!

  • These guys are way off tune! Who pays to watch these bozo's. I saw a better band in Psychiatric Band and these people were crazy!

  • Comment removed

  • horns are out of tune

  • certainly an interesting arrangement, I like it

  • Look at his face haha

  • I love this song!!! I'm doing an assignment on it for my jazz improv class at EAHS. I'm talented when it comes to basic 12 bar blues, but this fast paced blues pattern's gonna be tough. Better find some ii V i's. Great vid man.

  • Wow... what a line-up in the reed section!!! Fine, Mr. Belden... fine fine fine!

  • this is almost the exact same arrangement my high school jazz band played, but there's no solo... and that's why i watched it, i wanted to compare.

this was really amazing though. it's sweet whenever you can see people solo so musically and be so into the music, for several minutes at a time... most people are done soloing after thirty seconds to a minute.

    great job!

  • Hello trumpet colleague!

I love your videos. All of them! Feel free to visit my blog anytime (link in profile).

    All best,

    Bruno

  • Holy SHIT. What the FUCK happened?

  • does anyone know the first and second song song on this cd? i tryed to search for what i thought it was but i couldnt find it... please send me a PM (if its possible)..

    Take care ppl:)

  • KILLER TROMBONE SOLO!

  • what do u call a guy that hangs out with horn players? a trombonist!

  • um i don't get it...

  • Find a trombone, and you'll understand.

  • i wish i could soon...

  • @SoullessPyre did, still don't understand...is it that their lesser instruments, because that's only the bass.

  • NIce freddie quotes by Pelt sounds good.

  • Can someone tell me the Chord changes for this tune...

Is it Like Cmaj7 and then Cmin7.... I don't know what to think...

  • should be something like G7-G7-Amin7-G7 in AABA form.

im not 100% sure on that though

  • thanks man.

but I worked it out a bit and at the end of the G7 they go to Fmaj7 in the last 2 bars before bridge. Thanks still

  • according to fake book, its Gmin7, and then you're right: they go do a F7 before the Amin. and then back to Gmin7 before the top of the head.

    must be another modal tune.

  • "must be another modal tune"

    It is!

  • Yes this is another really well known modal tune, like "So What". The really important thing is to really get into G dorian then just catch the other turnaround stuff as it goes by; the jazz here is going into and out of "outside" or "free" playing too; the rhythm section is catching that stuff real well.

  • lol the key becomes very ambiguous. i was soloing over it in my combo and at points, i found it extremely hard to determine the key, because everyone's just playing the notes of the mode!

  • That's the whole point of this music that people apparently don't get. I have always gotten it and I'm not even a musician. They go off on a dissonant sort of tangent that somehow winds up being harmonious and sounds cool. That's what makes the sound and I have always understood that point. Randy Brecker does that as well on his incredible one of a kind tune called, "Rocks".

  • Great!!! it is simply fantastic!

  • this is better than the original...lol...XDD

  • yeah andre

  • thats not a tuba its a baritone

  • ya im playing this song in jazz band and i play bari sax

  • very nice

  • Great horn playing all around- but what about the tuba? I didn't hear it. Is it playing in a higher range than a tuba usually plays, or is it not recorded well, or just really blended into the ensemble? I see him picking it up at the right times, so I know he's playing it. How the ensemble found a tuba usefull is interesting to me, but I'm not sure what he's doing here.

  • camera mic loses bottom end....that's why tuba is not heard as well...

  • Wow this is great, im doing this piece in a combo. That was the most immense trumpet solo!

  • jeremy is a very good player..

    doing his thang

    he's a cool person too...

    great job

  • that's jeremy pelt on trumpet! not wallace roney!

  • Great band, great soloists, and I see Master virtuoso Chas Pillow back there doing his modest but killin job of section playing. He is a wonderful alto soloist too...plays his ass off!

  • Killing band....though, I've never been a fan of Wallace Roney.

  • wow seeing the 2 jazz trombone teachers at NEC on youtube rly makes me want to go there

  • thanks man! awesome

  • Cool!! It's funny because in Jazz band (8th grade!) is playing this song! And I just switched to Tenor sax from Flute so I an play this song! But this song in your video sounds like a different version then ours

  • Wow! I'm in Jazz band too, I'm also playing this song. Attempting the trumpet solo....wish me luck. Sound way different too.

  • Good luck1 :3

We actaully just finished a jazz concert and lunch..

    lol

  • haha

  • Yeah, I am also in Jazz Band and we are playing this song, its real fun to play :)

  • Same here, we're playing ti too

  • Privileged to be your audience, Bob. Great music. Well done!

  • One of the best interpretations of this davis' tunes. Great job Mr Belden!

    5*

  • I don't get why people have to cut down a good song. It was a great song.

  • Great Music, Great Sound. What if I was the 5th trumpet, and there were 3 trombones, 2 french horns and 1 tuba, incl. all 5 reeds, how about that?

I'm talkin' about a lineup of 4-5 trumpets, 3 trombones, 2 french horns, 1 tuba, 5 reeds and rhythm.

Jeremy Pelt's solo was well. So did Lovano and Heyward, they did a fantastic job.

I still love me some Miles Davis.

  • Great music!

  • Hi Bob,

Big fan of your work. There's nothing like "Live" music at Birdland. Love the band you chose. Wish I could have been there. Keep making great music.

    Peace,

    Greg

  • Another brutalization of an all time great tune. Disorganized choaos? Boring..

  • I love how people always feel the need to criticize other musicians. Its really funny because 99% of critics like shire2005 couldnt walk in the footprints of the players in this video.

  • God you're mentally retarded. Any piece with Cuber, Smulyan, and Lovano together is amazing :D. But regardless, it's a good interpretation of the original, and it sounds wonderful. Please pay more attention to the bigger picture, and don't listen to it with ears like you'd listen to modern rock music or pop music, you'll hear chaos because of the structure. Broaden your mind.

  • Whoa..

Gary Smulyan and Ronnie Cuber in one BigBand!

Smulyan on baritone and Cuber on bass clarinet, right?

    Chris

  • some real killin soloists!!

  • Yessssssss!

  • I like how Jeremy Pelt resumes his wine durnig Lovano's solo. nice.

  • It's his wine, maybe he was thirsty.

  • your powers of logical deduction are staggering!

  • thankyou sir

  • Once again the baritone gets the crappy stand! lol

  • pelt's not too bad either... and lovano... man!

  • lovano and hayward...oh man

  • Hot, Jammin...

  • Great song. Who arranged it?

  • miles davis, he's awsome. i play that song in deja vu

  • NYC off night big band jazz at its cutting edge best. Go Bob and crew!

  • yeah!!!
