That check engine light is just a light that goes on when a sensor is not able to get a signal of something :air flow, temp, pressure, etc. If the car got an engine work like a turbo installation, maybe the oxigen sensor was disconnected and thats why the check engine light is on. Know more about modern engines and then say something about it.
