The geeky scientist was the head of the Air Force Academy's Astronautics Department. The producers called the Academy and got hold of Dr Kirpatrick (who was Colonel Kirpatrick at the time). They needed verbage on orbital mechanics and he started spouting off some stuff. They were so impressed they asked him to be in the commercial. I think because he was still active duty at the time, that's why thy didn't use his rank. Air Force didn't want to relay the impression they endorsed Nike sneakers.
