unless this was restored before it became public domain some company having the money remastered this possibly to have the best printsfor home video it sure probably cost them a good penny only stuidos can afford this
Beautiful restoration. 2nd page title error? Gus Arnheim didn't record for Brunswick until 1933, but did appear in quite a few Vitaphone musicals. Could be Abe Lyman who is credited on 1-2 other Vitaphone cartoons.
Or you wouldn't be sayin' you're just playin' with me. You never treat me right; every night I'm alone. You don't even phone; no wonder I'm sighin', cryin'
One depiction of breasts is covered, but the other is not- Why?
And still-It would make more sense to cover the girlfriend (typically would be considered more virginal and want to protect that image) and leave the dancing girls topless since they would be considered portraying tramps. This backwards, especially for this era.
I believe your comment of censorship (ie; Hayes Office) is interesting, but does not really fit what I was aiming for.
...as a former trombone player, I watch this, and find myself screaming, HOW IN THE HELL DID HE DO THAT?!?!?! at the car sound effects...

What clinches it - listen at 5:33 for Slim Martin, Lyman's very distinctive trombone soloist.

@brosro I'm sure it's Lyman - know both bands' records quite well.
Might have been confusion as Arnheim originally worked for Lyman!
Anyway, Warners owned Brunswick at the time, thus the tie-in with Abe.

Thanks so much for posting this cartoon, one of my favorite. Here are the lyrics to the songs.

Oh you don't know what you're doin'
Or the mean things that you're doin'
Or you wouldn't be doin' what y'er doin' to me.
Oh you don't know what you're sayin'
When you say that you are playin',
Or you wouldn't be sayin' you're just playin' with me. You never treat me right; every night I'm alone. You don't even phone; no wonder I'm sighin', cryin'
You're driving me to ruin,
Well you don't know what you're doin'
Or you wouldn't be doin' what y'er doin' to me !

Oh you don't know what you're doin',
That foghorn that you're blewin'
Makes such a big noise and drivin' us insane ("huh? what's that? what's that?")
Oh it isn't even funny,
Give us something for our money;
But the only thing you give us is a pain ( a great big pain )

You're all just jealous ("jealous?"), jealous ("jealous?") of me ("ha,ha, ha, ha, ha...")
You're all on a spree ("ha,ha,ha,ha,ha..."),
It's gone to your head ("aw, go sit on a tack!")
If you knew what we were thinking,
"Pipe down you've all been drinking !"
Says you!..."says me!"...Says who?..."says me!"
Oh, you don't know what you're do-do-doin' at all !

So, why do the dancing girls have "pasties" on, but the girlfriend is "topless"?
dorastandpipe 2 years ago
@dorastandpipe because it's 1930, censoring doesn't exist yet
