It's not a easy thing to run a country full of 1.4 billion people. Without a strong single minded party, China might go into chaos and got split up.

Let's imagine the Nationalist won the civil war.

1) Without the Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution, China's economy would be 20 or more years ahead. At least Chinese people would not waste those years messing up around.

2) With economic aid from the Westerns, esp. US, China would get industrialized rapidly. And would soon become the third largest economy during the Cold War (after USSR and US).

Ya, but the Nationalist was not defeated by CCP, they were defeated by currption. And, that's the reason why millions of Chinese people chose to support communists in China's civil war regardless of what happened in Great Leap Forward and Cultural Revolution. You should go ask the nationalists why they couldn't wipe out communists even though they were equiped with advanced American made weapons.
