I found this video really good for my own overeating and then thought how I could apply this to training my team. We come across a lot of young people who when faced with an event soothe by self-harming. If I can help them to consider task orientated coping maybe we could make a difference. What do you think?
well, the problem is: there is no concrete event i think i cant fix. I mean, yes, there is, but its all internal and i most of the time i dont get what that sudden urge to eat is all about. thats what makes it soo difficult. anyway, love you and your vids ;)
Josie, you are absolutely marvelous. These videos couldn't have come at a better time in my life. Thank you so much. Really. And I LOVE the shower head story - inspirational :-)
I had so many "aha" moments watching this. It was wonderful.
Question: I eat when I'm tired bc it keeps me up. Particularly chocolate seems to help bc of the caffeine. So when I am at work, and I'm exhausted, I can't leave and I can't take a nap I problem solve with food bc it works. I obviously don't feel so great after but am wondering if you have suggestions for how to problem solve during this situation. I am technically dealing with the stressor. It seems silly but it h
@schnitzrif Oh I am SO glad you found "aha" moments while watching this! Hmmm...have you tried caffeine that isn't in a food form..like sipping green tea?
OMG! That is so funny about the shower head! Same! I used to be able to clean our shower easy as we had one of those shower heads on the hose that you can lift off the wall, but my boyfriend broke it and replaced it with one of the old ones that dont come off so cleaning the shower went from fun and easy/water saving to taking ages and me getting soaked and pissed off. So I would avoid cleaning the shower for too long long, and go eat something! Your videos are great, I can totally relate!
I suppose self-belief and self-confidence . . and the ego are also huge issues relating to the "can I fix it" scenario. How does one gain these things, if one has already lost themselves . . or never even known themselves?
If the individual doesn't exist . . strongly and independently, what hope is there for that person to face reality as it is, which is very much resistant to their being? They get crushed, that is, if they lack determination, motivation and self-esteem . . most of the time.
This video (parts 1 and 2) was awesome! I thank you so much for putting such a concrete visual and explaination to what I feel like I have been doing my whole life. I loved your shower example. Such a simple thing, but yes, as a woman, I often feel like that kind of thing is often beyond me fixing. I also feel powerless in getting my children to do what I feel like they should be doing. I am going to start applying your strategy everyday!!! THANK YOU!!!
I get what your saying but what my problem is how to I tell the difference between actually being hungry and emtional hunger? They're practically the same thing in my mind now and I don't know how to go about solving that :(
Thanks for this! It all makes so much sense. But the best thing is your sincerity and enthusiasm. I can tell you really believe it, which makes me think I can do it too!
I have really appreciated and been blessed by your posts. I wish I would have found them earlier!! Thanks for the honesty and genuinely useful info, stories, etc.
There have been SO many times where I was putting up with something that made me miserable and I could easily have fixed, but for some reason I either didn't believe I could change it or didn't want to make the effort. It wasn't showerheads...well, on second thought, I have been irritated with showerheads before...but whatever it was, I felt helpless to change it and disappointed for not standing up for myself. And I know a lot of those times lead to the 'donuts'. So I totally know the feeling!
I've viewed all of your videos and I have to say that you're AWESOME! I'm going to use this model to help me deal with my emotional eating. I've never resorted to task oriented coping...it's always been about feeling sorry for myself and soothing myself with food. Such a cop out. Thank you for opening my eyes to something that's been holding me hostage for almost 20 years. I know I'll never get resolution until I address my overeating. THANK YOU for your insights and keep up the good work! :)
Usually I only find videos about people wallowing in their binge eating which while making me feel like I'm not alone also makes me feel like we are all doomed to binge-restrict forever! How happy was I after a horrible binge day to find your videos which gave intelligent strategies and information to deal with this overwhelming mindset I have been carrying. Thank you so much for taking the time to post these! I'm ready to wake up tomorrow and try something new : )
Yay!!! I am so glad Kate! I'm so sorry you had a rough day.. I love that you used it to find some helpful information! Very empowering way to pick yourself back up I must say!!! So glad you found this info helpful! There is SO much hope!!!
What's the solution if you realize that you can't have a man, not in a million years? After I meet him, I always sit and cry at home, and overeat. There's no solution to this problem :-(
And often my appetite arises from boredom. How to cope?
The solution to the original problem is to open yourself up to other more attainable men OR even better, figure out why you are after an unattainable man in the first place. Maybe there are commitment issues stemming from your childhood? Good luck figuring it all out!
thank you so much for taking the time to record this, it was so insightful! I've been doing a lot - A LOT - of reading and research into binge eating, but it's the first time I hear the soothing/solving theory and it makes so much sense. I totally see food as my "safe haven" where I can disconnect and not feel responsible for my life/problems/feelings. And that has to change... Quite a frightening thought though, taking actions to solve issues instead of just running to food to avoid them...
So glad this is helpful for you! Let me utterly encourage you that actually solving the problems and the self-confidence/self-trust that results is THE MOST AMAZING feeling ever! If I could put it in a capsule and sell it I'd make millions :)
Thank u , found you inspirational!! Thought i had lots of insight to my binge eating - but this "helpless" thing is sooo true of me! And im def a "soother" eating.
Thanks so much for your video. I've been trying to break away from some horribly erratic, pretty much eating disorder like behavior, and very recently i sort of snapped and realised i'd had enough. Your video about getting rid of binge eating to focus on emotional eating and its roots was so helpful, and these two are fantastic for getting to the root of the problem. It's really difficult, but you're making it so much easier. Thank you.
Oh I am so glad to know this is helpful!!! There is so much hope we absolutely can do this!!! Thanks for taking the time to to share these kind words it means a TON!
I was wondering if you had any advice on sorts of things one could to do for soothing besides eat? Sometime I just want a break from writing a school paper so I head to the kitchen. Maybe we can only figure that out for ourselves but if you have any examples of even what you do, it would be great. Thanks!
Hey Saskns....great question! I've had some delightful success by stopping and asking myself what I'm really wanting/needing in that moment....in your example it sounds like you may be wanting some escape/indulgence/reward.... at first it helps to some times plan them in advance like have a show tivo'd that you watch on a break or run to Target ...ultimately it is just checking in w/ yourself, finding what you REALLY are wanting and then doing your best to get it for yourself...hope this helps!
Thank you so much, I really needed to hear this today. Makes so much sense and I know that we need to stop turning to food to sooth ourselves and instead work on and fix the problems/stresses. Thank you. Mary
Yet another great post Josie. This really resonates with me. I need to get to journaling myself, as I have been doing a little bit of self medicating this week. Like someone else said in the comments I like that you are looking at wanting to eat when your not hungry as an ally. What a good tool. Keep posting and let us know when your blog will be available.
Wow! Thank you so much for filling in the missing piece of the puzzle for me.
I'm about 75% raw foodist and have been for about 1 year. It has helped a great deal with cravings, anxiety and depresion but it is never just what we eat is it.
I tell you a light bulb went on in my head when I happened on your video and you should know you are the first of anyone i have ever responded to.
I have now subscribed and look forward many more videos.
Oh I am honored and delighted that this has been helpful for you!!! Love those light bulb moments in life- don't you!!
My best friend is very into eating raw, she really enjoys how she feels eating that way and she makes some truly amazing dishes including chocolate pudding made from avocados- oh my!
I love your ability 2 intellectualize, then verbalize the subconscious emotional processes we go thru. I M not sure if this will make sense 2 U, but everything U speak of intellectually is the emotional process I went thru & wrote my book "Oh My God...She's Huge!" about. I M now putting all I learned & wrote about into action. As I listen 2 U, I realize what took U less than 20 minutes 2 explain took me 23 years 2 figure out & I M now putting it into action. Can I just say, WOW?!
Oh Joan thank you for such kind supportive words! I am so glad that this can be a compact version of the things you know and have discovered... like a 'travel size' reminder :)
Especially the part where you talk about how that feeling to eat when you're not hungry has gone from being your enemy to your ally. Isn't that what it's all about? Personally, I'm still going from the EVENT->SOOTHING, but plan to give some serious thought (and practice) to what you've presented here. I think your video and use of cut-outs etc. really simplifies and distils the problem down to it's essence. Thanks for doing homework and sharing the results!
