Now thats about as weird as it gets, i've just got out of Hospital myself, i spent 5 weeks in there and i would have died if i hadnt had a transfusion or two. i realised then that as i was a fairly rarish blood group (B+) if someone hadnt taken the trouble to donate some there was nothing doctors could have done. its worth doing, just once every few months, it dosnt hurt and its also a good way to check your own health too. dont wait until its you or one of your own in hospital.

Just to explain the process of giving blood that happened in Adelaide when I use to be a donor.

Get invite in the mail. Go in on the nominated day (or any time after the invite). See the staff and give them your details. Wait to be called. Get ask questions and a prick in the middle finger for them to test your haemoglobin level. If ok, go in to be escorted to a bed for your non-preferred arm. Get asked more questions. Get local pain killer then donation needle in the vein.

You might have to squeeze a rubber ball in your donation arm if the blood is coming too slowly. After several minutes (seemed like 10minutes but not sure now), nurse comes and removes tourniquet then removes donation needle, puts a sticky plaster over the needle hole, and you hold your arm up and apply pressure with other hand. She then takes the donation away for processing. Nurse then wraps that relevant part of arm in a bandage, asks what want to drink.

It is important to have the drink to replace the fluids but they want you to wait around for about 20 minutes to ensure you start feeling faint or ill.

Go home, take off the wrap bandage after 24 hours take of the sticky plaster. Then wait for next time.

The only slightly painful thing was the pricking of the finger but it was it is over in a flash.

It is suspected that this excessive iron wears down vitual organs, that is a theory why women tend to live longer, so to all the younger men donating blood gives you extra life. I just checked with ABDR - apparently because have had male-to-male sex within the last 12 months, that makes me inelligable to donate bone marrow.
