  • Love the formation. They are very close each other that is awesome work.

  • time to call godzilla..lol.. probably ultraman will defend it.

  • You can hear the microwaves emitted from 154 (in the form of interference with the video camera's electronics). Really great capture.

  • @KentuckyGiant That's the surface search radar you hear hitting the camera. Watch it rotate and when it swings around and is pointing at the the camera, the buzz appears. If you're standing on an upper deck and against a bulkhead, you can actually feel the energy each time one of those swings around, that is, as long as the ship is in close proximity.

And, for those who don't know, each of those weapons systems aboard the Japanese destroyers are made in the good old USA.

  • Steering a boat on open sea with 2/3 bft is impressive? What has the world become. And dream on about thinking the US and Japan have the best frigates.

  • lol i like how the top comment says : hericopter XD

  • Pretty much. China knows this isn't Hideki Tojo's Japan they are dealing with. If you recall that fishing boat incident last year, even though the Chinese vessel was clearly at fault by entering Japan's EEZ and tried to escape by ramming a JCG patrol craft. Government prosecutors bowed to China's constant demand to release the chinese boat captain.

  • Cont (Again again)

but has ~3x less displacement, because of a greater focus for Littoral Ships like Missile Boats and Offshore Patrol Ships given their coastal borders with the DPRK.

Their major combat vessels are every bit as capable as any of the JMSDF (Mainly because they both work off of the same systems as USN Burke Class and Ticonderoga class ships) and in one case, more powerful (King Sejong The Great Class / KDX-III, more armament than a Ticonderoga Class Cruiser)

  • Cont (Again)

The ROCN by itself can probably take half the PLAN Surface fleet with it, considering the massive technological difference between the Two (Over half of the PLANs surface ships are 1950s vintage, or 60s-70s. The oldest ROCN ships are Upgraded Knox Class ships from the late 60s-Early 70s, and their most powerful are their La Fayette mods and the Kidds, which are much more recent and much more powerful/advanced).

Also, the ROKN is much larger than the JMSDF on a ship basis (170-110)

  • (cont)

wing assets, because of their post war agreement with the victories powers. Furthermore, none of its neighbors will allow it. The memories of Japanese Atrocities in world War II linger, and none of them will allow a Japanese Ship with fixed wing complement, ala a Aircraft Carrier. Hyuga and 19000t, while capable of being a light carrier, will never be more than a Helicopter Carrier in Japanese Service.

Furthermore, one does not need a lot of ships to be highly capable.

  • 2:45 Haruna Class hericopter destroyer, DDH141,Haruna was decommissioned in 2009. She made substitution to Hyuga class helicopter destroyer, Hyuga

0:53 Tachikaze class guided missile destroyer DDG169, Asakaze was decommissioned in 2008. She made substitution to Atago class aegis destroyer,Ashigara

So, 2ships of 4ships in this movie will never watch anymore,,,Sad (; ;)

  • @UminoNuko Yes, it's sad to see them go. They were beautiful ships.

  • @UminoNuko lol hericopter, so stereotypical. whats a helicopter destroyer? a destroyer with a heli pad?

  • @UminoNuko Does some country buy them up or are they sent to be dismantled?

  • さすがですね伝統は継承されています。

    ある意味で抑止効果です。

  • これだけの速度で、この密集フォーメーション。操艦技術がかなり高いことがわかります。素晴らしい。

  • DD means most likliy destroyer guided missle

  • dude, i heard that, in term of unti-submarine warfare and clearing mines, they r one of best..

thats where they concentrate on i think,

ofcrs japan is island nation, they must be good at it..

anyway, jmsdf has no attacking capability on enemys land,

so they concentrate on capability of destroying enemy units and prevent them reaching japan

  • Why does the big ship and only 1 or 2 Big guns. Instead shoot back to enemies when 2 ships shoot each others. Do they got any personal fire arms so the solders can shoot. I can't stand when I saw only 1 big gun in a big ship????

  • @CharlieDoan That's because most modern warships use much longer-range sophisticated weapons to engage targets. For example, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, sea to air missiles, etc. Also, it might be just one gun, but it is extremely accurate and lethal. A modern ship with one of these guns would probably win a battle against a WW2 battleship with enough range.

That being said, you're right, battleships and other ships with lots of guns do provoke much awe and a sense of power. ;)

  • I think someone said that the japs should have a bigger fleet then they so cause they are an island country. Remember though, japan doesn't have much in the way of raw iron. If they want metal they have to ship it I from someone else.

  • I would scroll down and see all the "My country's ships can kick your country's ship's asses" comments. Lets just settle on that we hope we don't have to find out...

  • Cool, Japanese destroyers were at Pearl Harbor, crazy world. :)

  • japan has a better surface fleet then UK, seriously.

    PEACE germany

  • I'm sure we would have a similar type of surface fleet if we lived next door to China. All through the Cold War the Royal Navy was designed primarily for one of Anti Soviet Submarine operations and mine clearance. Different situations dictate the type of fleet you build. So its not really fair to say Japan has a better surface fleet.

  • its not fair but its a fact.

  • Your missing the point, different ships for different roles. The Japanese Navy isn't geared up to fight a Submarine blockade or to clear mines. It's designed to support US Carrier Battle Groups and provide air defence of the Japanese mainland. If it came down to it the RNs Subs would rape the arse off the Japanese fleet, surface and subsurface.

  • well te japanese ships are very good against submarines. yes they cannot clear mines very well.

    18 conventional vs 12 nuclear?

    I wouldnt be to sure...

  • RN's SSN's are far superior to the Japanese Diesel Electrics and they arn't handicapped by having to snorkel to recharge batteries. The UK has invested far more time and resources in hunting Subs the Nimrod is the best maritime patrol aircraft in the world and unlike the US Orion is undetectable to Subs. The Type 23 Frigate with it's towed array is arguably the best Sub hunter in the world. Even the Invincible class carriers were designed with ASW roles in mind.

  • Technically they're Arabic numerals that the Japanese, the USN and other navies use because they are widely recognized and understood.

  • no question for the numerals, what i meant was the DD designation, different navies use different codes, the russians use PROJECT, british TYPE, why hthe japanese use the same as the americans? DD designation? its because its still an american design and only licenced to be built in japan.

  • Okay, that I can't answer. Maybe someone else will read this and help us out.

  • You may ask why JMSDF ship uses number?

The rule of classification about the JMSDF vessel uses as the same one using in U.S.N..

Because the JMSDF has historically re-built up by giving the reminder PFs & LSSLs from U.S.N. after the re-independence from Allied Nations in the mid of 1950s. Then, the rule of vessel's classifications has been "transplanted" from U.S.N..

  • Continue

However, the rule about the name of vessel(Ex. Asakaze) is adopted the rule used by the Imperial Japanese NAVY.

    For instance:

The name of DDH uses as the old name of Japanese regions(Ex. "Hyuga" is the name of Miyazaki Pref. - located at the southern Kyushu. There is the birthplace of Japanese Naval Force in ancient time)

The name of DD is uses as the name of meteorological phenomina such as "Inazuma(the lightning)".

  • @finchiestiffler79

Its because japan's national defense plan is based on joint defense with USA.

We made it same to avoid confusion and allow smooth operation

  • just my opinion but 1 of the world's best navies. fighting tradition as good as any. japan should have carriers in service. also more subs. island nation. nothing more critical than its navy. great video.

  • Damn we done fell off....

  • These are some of the oldest destroyers JMSDF has. They are either decommisioned already, or soon will be.

US doesn't build Arleigh Burkes for Japan. Japan builds all the JMSDF ships on their own.

  • destroyers that are equipped with defensive missiles only. they don't carry tomahawk missiles like U.S. destroyers.

  • Didnt know Japanese were allowed to have destroyers.

  • @nitestryker7 haha!wer u been for the past decades?

  • I thought they could only have defensive military and the US filled in the gaps.

  • @nitestryker7 yup!but that doesnt mean that they cant raise a powerful navy agian...

they actually have the kongo class DDG`s which is a copy of the u.s. navy`s arleigh burke class of destroyers. i also heard that they are building an aircraft carrier again. which is right there to the right>>>its called 16ddh hyuga

  • the whole budget for the japanese force is just 1% of the national budget! damn! they dont look 1% to me.

  • well, raise the national budget and the defence budget will do so, too. XD

  • Very few countries would even allow battleships of another country into their waters.

Just goes to show how friendly the US and Japan is.. :3

  • I bet you would say something bloddy different if it was 1943 February.

    Ha Ha Ha

  • Actually it's pretty routine and all countries invite other countries warships to visit their ports let alone pass through their waters! :)

  • depends on the part of the world you are in. warships can only enter friendly waters. waters of an unfriendly nation is... well... dangerous...

  • Excellent video. That really is some great ship handling. Station keeping is difficult work.

Looks very impressive. Let's see Godzilla mess with that!

  • Awesome video man

  • odd i regard helicopters as an extremly important part of a ship arsenal and defence . .

  • I stand corrected, the Arleigh Burke class has the ability to embark a single SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter on board.

  • DDH-141 Haruna retired last month instead of DDH-181 Hyuga.

We cannot see her beautiful shape any more...

  • Yes, they're destroyers. Fletcher herself had two helicopters on board. Today's more modern Arleigh Burke class destroyers don't have them, maybe that is what you're thinking of.

  • Are you sure those are destroyers? i havent seen any destroyer with an onboard helicopter, i think those are OPV's, not sure but im not an expert =).

  • かっこいい!Beautiful

  • Am I the only one who thinks is absolutely amazaing that 4 japanese destroyers were in Hawaii ca 60 years after their initial attack on the island... And now its like the US and Japanare best friends... I think its very very nice how mankind develops sometimes...

  • what was that intermitant buzzing? it was kinda a sort of buzzing chirp.

  • The buzzing is caused by the ship's radar as it sweeps past the camcorder's location. The lower pitched buzz is from Fletcher and the higher pitched are from the Japanese ships.

  • thank you, i thought it might be but i did not know if you could hear the radar with your ears. thats amazing i think.

  • The buzz was not audible while shooting the footage but it embedded itself on the audio track so it was audible later. Sometimes an AM radio will pick this up too and you can hear it live. In this video, watch the Japanese radars and you'll notice as they are facing me, the higher pitched buzz is audible.

  • They are Arleigh Burkes that we built for Japan, very nice ships

  • haahhah the evas xDddd!

  • It is Fleet Escort Force in Japan.

The ship of the Sea of Japan army is veryvery beautiful・・・

  • JAPAN!

  • y r they heading to san deigo?

  • A courtesy visit much the same as what the US Navy does in foreign ports. Perfectly normal and routine.

  • japans navy may be small but is every bit as good as the american navy, their Kongos and Atagos are every bit as good as the american Arleigh Burkes, they may not have carriers, but their frigate navy is very good, America, Japan, and Australia, the 3 most powerful Pacific navies

  • @HUNDLEYGUY95 dude, you may have forgotten china or russia, their one of the most modern weaponry and armory, but skorea is good to, their modern and advanced technologies , but their more peaceful :D

  • @yoleez8

China's Surface Fleet (Well, 57 of the 80 Major Combatants they have) are vintage 1950s designs for the most part. Russia's Pacific Fleet numbers just 5 Surface Ships (Which are for the most part probably not upkept the best or out of date) and just 3 Nuclear Attack Submarines.

The Korean Navy, the Japanese Navy, the American Pacific Fleet have them all soundly beaten.

  • @HUNDLEYGUY95 Small? JMSDF small? 30 frigates, 8 destroyers, 20 submarines, 7 carriers + support ships isn't a small navy. It's the very opposite, it's a big navy. Yes, the japanese have 7 carriers: three Omisu class very light carriers, two Hyuga class carriers and two 22DDH/19000t -class heavier carriers.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters

Hardly big compared to the USN, and PLAN.

I will admit however, that when i made that comment, i was rather ignorant, it being 2 years ago. As evidenced a lot by the fact i completely forgot about the ROKN and the ROCN.

I would myself lable the JMSDF as a "Medium Sized" Force, not as small as navies such as the Australian Navy, but not nearly as big as the PLAN, USN, and if i recall my numbers correctly, Russian Navy.

  • @HUNDLEYGUY95 I'm from Finland. My country's navy is what one should label small. Or tiny, perhaps. JMSDF does have every tool it needs to reflect respectable naval power. Granted, it doesn't quite compare to that of USA's, let alone the ever-growing naval force of PLAN. ROKN or ROCN are not the level of JMSDF in almost any way...

And sorry, it wasn't Omisu but Osumi...Jesus how I messed up.

Hyuga class does indeed qualify as light carrier. 22DDH/19000t class qualifies as medium carriers.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters

Also, Helicopter Destroyers are not "Carriers". The latest Hyuga Class i will in fact admit is a "Light Carrier" (In much the same way as the Brit Invincible class is), none of their other ships, such as the Haruna, shown in this video, is a Carrier. they are just destroyers with a higher than normal Helicopter Compliment (Haruna carries 3 SH-60s, as does Shirane, Arleigh Burke Flight II has full accommodations for 2).

Hyuga Carries up to 11 (Standard is 4).

  • @HUNDLEYGUY95 I'm not talking about Haruna. I'm talking about

    - Hyuga -class;

    JDS Hyuga,JDS Ise

    - Osumi class;

JDS Osumi, JDS Shimokita, JDS Kunisaki

    - 19000t class

Two yet unnamed ships, bigger than those mentioned before.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters

Since when had Amphibious Assault Transports and Helicopter Destroyers (What the Hyuga and 19000t class are, not aircraft carriers, though they can easily been called such)

Furthermore, Invincible (22,000 tonnes) is a light carrier, while vessels such as Charles de Gaulle (37,000-42,000) and Giuseppe Garibaldi (27,000-30,000) are medium carriers. 19,000 tonnes is even smaller than a Invincible, and furthermore, the Japanese Ships are completely prevented from carrying fixed

  • @HUNDLEYGUY95 Let's just say that all this is bullshit. Those carriers will carry F35 VTOL aircraft, which gives them the exact same capabilities - almost - as any other carrier. It's political that they're designated helicopter carriers, as Japan's constitution prohibits them.

You can call them amphibious assault transports or such, but as they carry F35, and other non-helicopter aircraft, they've got somewhat all the same options as bigger carriers.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters Osumi class can't be considered as a "carrier". I think the Hyuga was more of the test platform for a true aircraft carrier.

  • @OperationEndGame I know...I was pushing boundaries when I called it carrier. It's LHD though, but they're not considered carriers.

But Hyuga and 19000t class are different story, though. With F35 fighters they do have a clear aircraft carrier role.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters We can only speculate what kind of role the Hyuga would have, but I am leaning towards to a sea-control/ASW for her for now. I can see her having a major refit with a heat-resistant deck and a ski jump if the China-Japan tension escalates. As for the 22DDH, that is definitely a light aircraft carrier.

  • @OperationEndGame That's true. Hyuga will require some refitting in order to launch F35s, but those two Hyuga class ships will make a great support ships for the JMSDF. As for the 19000t/22DDH class, Japan is building two of them to fend off China's rapid naval growth, as you well pointed out. But I don't think that Japan should feel truly threatened, because if PLA is indeed going to take action against a country, it'd be Taiwan.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters PLA's actions say otherwise. It is time for Japan to seriously rethink the Article 9.

  • @OperationEndGame I agree that they should get rid of that, but for different reasons. China is going to reclaim Taiwan (in my opinion it belongs to them) and the grudge between the countries is due WW2 events. However, when it comes down to it, it's about showing who's the definitive power in Far-East. And without a powerful army, Japan can't be the definitive power. They have already an excellent army, but they could have so much more.

  • @OnlyLifeMatters Japan is pretty weak in the game of diplomacy. All China has to do is to bring up the WW2 card to keep Japan in check. It is working so far in China's favor.

  • @OperationEndGame Yep, but Japan does this only due the political correctness, right?

  • @OperationEndGame Yeah, China is using WW2 card while it is still somewhat effective. But it is becoming less effective as older japanese politians are retiring and being replaced by younger people. Sooner or later WW2 card will be completely useless. China actually has not been using WW2 card as much as they used too. They used it too much and loosing effectiveness. Even the recent ani-Japan protest failed. Smart Chinese students used it as camouflage to protest chinese government.

  • @Sitti2300 Old japanese politicians may be retiring, but that doesn't mean Chinese people will forget events in WWII. As much as we have an issue with our own government, believe me when I say that we will give Japan what they deserve for what they did in WWII. I just hope mother nature doesn't get to have all the fun :)

  • @Nyro888 That is a misconception. Latest poll indicates that majority of Chinese people see Japanese as friend. Anti-Japan protest in China that you see in the news are just handful of people who had anti-Japan education. Most Chinese people don't judge present Japanese people by WW2. We don't judge them by Pearl Harbor. And They don't judge us by Atomic Bomb. Past is past. Now is now. ALL governments have some issues. Japan & Australia is great friend. What you are saying is very sick man.

  • @Nyro888 What in your mind is propaganda which Chinese Communist party want you to believe. Bandung Conference in 1955 is a good example what Japan did during WW2. Japanese representative did receive very pleasant appraisal from all country attended. There were 29 Asian and African country representatives and Chou en-lai was there also. This event pissed off the states and Propaganda against Japan was propelled further. The Great Cultural Revolution killed conscience of China.

  • @Nyro888 Japan has been a first-class member of the international community for decades, and everyone loves Japan.

And Japan has amazingly good engineers.

  • @Nyro888 Comparing present day Japan and China I say Japan's much more democratic and peaceful

  • @HUNDLEYGUY95 lol bullshit

  • cool! neat to see a bit of Japan's naval force. It is a different world nowadays but I can understand feeling uneasy about going near Pearl Harbor. Thanks for the video!

  • ni ma si la ma

  • Japanese navy and the US navy are Awesome!

  • awesome!

  • Those are some old boats, excellent navigation though.

  • Looking at the tight formation, its as though the ships are trying to say....we travel as a unit, fight as a unit and if need be sink as a unit.

Impressive display of skill and discipline. I think sailors know that the chances of survival at sea is much greater in combat. Thats why most of the japanese war songs during WW2 sound so happy.

  • im sure they got gundams and mobile suits hidden that SHIPS...lol

  • what about EVAs? :P

  • great video... were you with the Fletcher long?

  • I served on the first USS Fletcher DD-445 and was allowed by the CO of the DD-992 to make this tiger cruise.

  • that is so cool. when i saw the title i thought it was a reeactment with the japanese. y did the go to hawii

  • Very high masts and superstructures, graceful bow-to-stern lines, sharp bows with low wake signature; yes, these are definitively Japanese designed destroyers in all their sheer beauty. Japanese destroyers in WWII gave the US Navy more grief than their battleships. They were sleek, well armed, extremely fast and manned by crack sailors. Japanese naval architecture is worthy of high praise. Nothing has changed.

  • Yes, superstructures are high... would like to see modern version of "pagoda" masts though.

  • 日本の護衛艦だ。

  • 日本海軍船は美しい。

  • Didnt we give them those ships? I thought we gave the japanese some of our ships. Cause those japanese ships looks like they should have been decommissioned 20-30 years ago.

  • how so?

  • Decommissioned? Technology comes and goes all the time. But currently the JMSDF is the 2nd most powerfull fleet in the Pacific. Plus, the Japanese view of the military is different from most western countries. Theres an article on wikipedia, can't exactly recall the actual text.

  • So who has the most powerful fleet in the pacific? China, Russia or the Americans?

  • Comment removed

  • The American fleet is the most powerful anywhere.

  • They make they own ships,,,go to google earth and type "sasebo" japanese shipyard,,you can see there how they capture building a ship

  • DD[Helicopter×1]×31,DDH[Helicopter×3]×6,DDG×9[The Aegis-equipped ship 6],DE×8

  • banzai

  • imperial japanese navy fubuki...?

  • Japanese destroyer feet is the second largest the world

  • u see how tight they are. theyre kinda good

  • The Japanese defense budget is only 1% of the national budget.

However, the amount of money is the fifth place world.

In this, the menace of the nuclear missile does not disappear either.

I make it the world's greatest amount of money with 3% of the national budget as the defense budget and think that I should increase the latest interceptor missile Aegis-equipped destroyer more.

  • Amagiri is the name of the ship that ran over JFK's PT 109. Would be wild if it visited the PT 658 in Portland, and we brought over the surviving native and his canoe. search "pt 109" for the entire series I did

  • Salute !

  • I was on the O'Kane, damn good memories out there, thanks for the vid.

  • Those noises are caused by the various radar systems on the ships interfering with the camcorder as the beam sweeps past. The higher pitched noises come from the Japanese destroyers and the lower pitched noises from the American destroyer.

  • That means the beams are also sweeping past the crewmember's bodies. Hope you guys already had kids, ha ha ha, just kidding!

  • whats the sporadic zeep noise? sounds like a flightcontrol radar in f band or j band and ihave no clue about these things. haha
