  • I love them all but no other t/a's compare to the fourth gen. I have one and the ls1 is amazing.

  • its funny that you have a 3500 stall on there because truly if your not running a trans break that 3500 stall is way to high and actually robbing you of power and torque just because you have a 3500 stall does not make you faster sometimes it can make you even slower

  • This pretty much how my race will look. i got an 88 GTA with the L98 350, my aunt wants to race me with her 99 T/A with the LS1 :( Gonna lose. but third gen look a lot better in my opnion.

  • @Camaromandave98 I always thought the sunfire was for those who could not afford the firebird because the sunfire came out after the firebird. Kinda funny how people try to degrade the look because they can't degrade the power.

  • @Camaromandave98 lol 4.6 vs 5.7 This is one of those instances where size does matter. Its funny because the Trans Am was loved so much that Kevin Morgan spent a lot of money making a conversion for the 2010 camaro. Mustangs are cool... if you want less power for the price.

  • both cars are nice, but i think it was an unfair race because the third gens could only have up to 245 horse and the fourth gens after 98 came with 315 standerd, but i would shill have the 88 cause it looks better and is more capalble of a car when built right, i bought one and built the 350 in it and ran a 9 second 1/4 for less than 5 grand, and i can't even touch a 4th gen for less than 6000 thats worth building

  • @BreeBrutality While I love the 3rdgen, no way will I ever bet against a 4th gen LS1 when it comes to stock vs stock racing. Unless we are talking about a 89 TTA, or 91-92 Firehawk, which is a different animal all together.

  • A stall would help tons also. The shift kit helps for more precise 'faster' shifts instead of waiting for higher rpms to change gears.

    oh and btw, i think the 4th gen convertible will be even heavier than the mentioned 2-300lbs compared to a coupe/t-top 3rd.

  • not to mention the fact that in 88 the 350 GTA only had 225 horsepower as opposed to the 91/92's having 245 which were a bit more to be reckoned with.

    Still nothing against an LS1 - was an unfair match but at least it was a cool one.

  • A stock L98 (5.7 tpi) GTA will run aroung a 14.5 - 15.0 quarter mile. The 60 foot time is very close or identical to a LS1 or LT1 powered car. The main problem is the TPI does'nt flow good past 4500 rpm. It drops power like crazy at that point. They were a great street setup for the time, producing lots of torque. They produce more low end torque than the LT1's did and maybe the LS1's. Still they are pretty good for a 20 year old car.

    And I've raced a few (Stick Shift) Mustang GT's before and half of those races I won, and the other I lost by only by like 1/2 of the Mustang or bearly by the whole Mustang..

    And vice versa on my wins

  • in an '01 vette I could do 110mph in 3rd gear (6 spd) and I thought that was fantastic... only an automatic could pull 150 in 3rd... especially in a firebird... I don't know what the newer transmissions are geared at... but the 700r4's can do 175 (theoretically) in 3rd... assuming it can handle the power to get it there...

    I'm really suprised the convertible ate the GTA that bad... the engines aren't that dissimilar... sure the newer one has more HP.. but still... that was a big difference...

  • well the TPI motor isn't a bad motor... just underpowered for it's day... cars have only gotten faster in the years since the muscle car era and the first oil crisis... when suddenly everything was built slow...

    still in it's day that GTA was the top of the line... shouldn't be that slow...

  • i have a 02 trans am and messed around with my friend whos got a 88 trans am 305 he keep up for a little cause they has alot of torque as well about 290-300 not as much as 350ish but enough to keep up untill the LS1 engine with the 120 horse power diffrence kicks in lol

  • GTA = Great Tubby Am

    Used to own one, the L98 sure helped make up for the weight of the car. Despite the wight of the car, it handled okay and had decent power. I still miss it. If I get the chance to own another Trans Am again, it would be one of the L03 stickshift models.

    That or a hardtop TTA. :D

  • Keep in mind that the LS1 cars are sometimes actually heavier....

  • my dad had a gta we put a ls1 out of a police car in it and the biggest cam he could get in it and he was doing 150 in 3rd i know that because the cop told us when we got caught lol

  • well, i spent 5 years as a ASE mastertech, and now im a Machinist... i have never once seen/heard of someone ordering one gear to be cut, nor have i ever heard of someone bringing just one gear to a shop and asking to install it. even then... i still call bullshit on kids that dont know what they are saying... if someone is un-informed they shouldn't speak, on youtube and in person. As it only leads to making a ASS-of-U-and-ME
