@kevinocooldaddy At least there are still good artists on-Jackson Browne's good, and it doesn't get better than Frank Black. Don't get Paloma Faith though...
An artist may not have been satisfied with the result no matter how much we think a song is a classic. But I find it very hard to believe that he wasn't pleased with any of these songs when they first recorded them. I find this project pointless, other than the reason I first mentioned.
@Freakster1970 Most successful songwriters have a career span of only a few golden years--it's really hard to keep it up. But Ray is the exception--he's been doing it for almost 50 years and he's still writing superior songs. Have a listen to his recent critically-acclaimed solo albums.....
@dalexwats Ah here dude, more like 29 years. 3 top 10 albums in the UK and not one in the States and more or less irrelevant since the mid 70's....and im very fond of Ray with or without the Kinks. Rose tinted glasses there my friend!
@niall29 From 1964 (YRGM) to...let's say, Imaginary Man (2009) is 45 years. And he's still writing songs that other artists want to record and perform. Irrelevant to whom? The great unwashed? What do they know? Who cares about sales? Listen to Animal, To The Bone, All She Wrote, The Morphine Song etc. etc. The general public is a fickle mistress-- no one cared about Vermeer for hundreds of years; Mozart was a "minor artist" ; Van Gogh never knew.... As Ray once wrote, "Time Will Tell".
Great interview! I wish it could have gone on for an hour. I like when he says he was never a rock star. Ray reminds me of Buddy Holly in a way: singer/songwriter/musician/producer (of which Holly was the first to do all four). But neither one of them looked like Elvis or the Beatles on stage.
"The real star was my brother..." God bless ya, Ray and God Save the Kinks!

I can't believe he put Bon Jovi on this. They are a farking joke of a band, just pure cheese-ball crap. I thought Ray had better taste then that

Living in the past is someone who can't write a good new song and looks back to old great ones.
