some two and a half thousand maybe more years back a blacksmith in Guinea made a dun dun and it boomed while maintaining a strong kick sound when struck.
The kick drum owes all to the dun dun its big large phat as grandaddy
You're being satirical, right? Having a hard time determining whether or not there's sarcasm. It should be obvious, but unfortunately there are actually some people out there ignorant enough to believe things like that =/
Baby marched to the beat of his own drum. He didnt follow what everyone else was doing. The man revolutionized the drumset by inventing the kick drum.
Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich are two of the great icons of percussion. To this day rock drummers use their innovations and styles. Krupa INVENTED most of the equipment used by drummers today, and Rich INVENTED techniques that are still used by drummer today. They in turn were influenced by Baby Dodds, the first great percussionist and drum kit player of all time. (Invented the floor bass (kick drum) Check them all out, theyre as great to listen to now as they were back then.
BABY DODDS IS THE MAN!!!!!! Great to see another model pro with the same passion i have for playing loud!! So so damn good that Dodds couldnt tolerate "the swatts" as Lamothe called them. He really knew how to let go at the tubbs, always love Baby.
This is my family. My uncle was the inventor of the jazz swing drum style, the shimmy beat, and multiple techniques used regularly today. These are the originators of jazz from which almost all contemporary styles of music arose. You should question why the most famous drummers like Gene Krupa, note him as the most influential drummer of all time.
Please show some respect for the individuals who are responsible for your favorite styles of music.
I am Jerold Dodds, my uncle is Baby Dodds. My grandfather is Johnny Dodds.
I am a recreational drummer. I don't drum as a profession but at some point in the near future I will be using my musical talent more seriously. I have a deep rooted feel for good music.
NO WAY!!! You're a direct descendant of Baby Dodds!!?? He paved the way for all drummers in the early days of jazz. I read some of his biographical stuff. I also play drums. He was right on the mark when he said that not anybody can drum. I play semi professionally. He would actually be your great uncle.
Wonderful to see that the Dodds musical tradition is continuing. Your grandfather (my favourite musician in any style) and your great-uncle have given enormous pleasure to thousands of people over the last 80 years. You must be very proud of them.
Louis loved Baby's shimmy beat. Sometimes he got laughing so hard when Baby also swivelled around on his stool that Louis had to stop playing or singing. You are a living piece of history man. Could you expand upon the last part of your comment - "Please show some respect...styles of music."
I'm sorry about the confusion. When I said "please show some respect, etc..., the subject(title) of this video was different, and my comments were meant to address that. This was sometime over a year ago, and I suppose that it is out-of-place now that this video's title has been updated.
Baby Dodds!!! I've learned from him on his "Baby Dodds Talks and Plays" instructional LP. These videos are treasures.

Heaven knows :). Some drummers don't use ride cymbals and others don't bother with toms. So peace!

Notice the absence of the hi-hats, that's just how this legend wants it.
'I didn't like any of it and I still don't. Some drummers can't play without them. I can't play with them.'
Baby Dodds on the hi-hats.

He wouldn't be saying that now.
