it predates that Bobby as I heard this song first performed in a spoof of it in the late 40's it is an old cajun folk song. I love it in it's pure form and this comes closest of all the versions here.
On July 21 and 22, 2011, I featured Jo-El Sonnier in my Louisiana Legends Concert Series and he was every bit as perfect as he is here and brought down the house at the Caribbean Cove at the Isle Capri Casino in Westlake, Louisiana. Jo-El is a .truly a Louisiana treasure and very deserving of being in the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. -Vince Vance
@marip0sa34 Part way working on them, He sings this very different from a lot of singers. His verses are out of order from the way you usually see them. His version is for sure my favorite for its true cajun authenticty. Waylon Jennings is one of my favorite singers, but his version is just mumbles not true cajun french lol Hopefully someone gets the lyrics down
How heartwarming it is to those who love history ,to see the culture and music of the Acadians celebrated and preserved by performers of the splendid quality of Jo-El Sonnier. I'm not Cajun , but saw him on a PBS broadcast special one night with John Hartford many, many years ago , and I've loved Cajun music ever since!!!
and this was my sister's song my Mom gave her when she was born, you would have thought my Mom was a full born cajun, where I get my great love of cajun's & their music!
This song is from the last scene of the movie "The Big Easy", when Dennis Quaid is dancing with Ellen Barkin.
As for the artwork, the flag looks like the flag of the Free French Forces in WW2, with an image of Mother Mary imposed on it. Not sure of the significance though.
@BobbyHilburn that flag is the Cross of Lorraine co-opted by DeGaulle because it was the banner of Joan of Arc. Somewhat contoversial at the time some wanted a straight French flag but DeGalle refused because The actual govt had capitulated. Lorraine as in Alsace-Lorraine disputed by France=Germany forever Also some elite forces (often mercinaries) have this as a ring ala Magnum PI :) history class is out
I like Jo-El a lot. I just wish I understood the language. Not muchof it spoken where I am from. I listen to his music on satellite radio. They usually play cuts that is in both English and Cajun-if that is the name. It is great!
@stefalbert One of the most beautiful, but yet sad songs ever ha, whoever broke had to have his heart broke. Brings back fond memories of home and a certain gal of course

Not only a great musician, but also a real down to earth person. He really is proud of his heritage and his music. AND he has a right to be.

@BobbyHilburn The flag has the Cross of Lorraine on it - which was the symbol of the Free French during WWII. Good eyes there!
