I was SO LUCKY to meet Mark Ryan (Nasir) at a Sci-fi convention a couple of years ago and got his autograph as well as having a chat with him (and he is a great guy in real life). What a lot of people may not know is the above fight was put together in around 45 mins and (amazing as it seems) Mark, at that that point, had hardly any sword fighting. As for Nasir - has to be one of the coolest characters that has ever been created on TV.
He was actually supposed to be killed by Little John at this point, but everybody liked the character so much that he was allowed to join the gang instead!
I watched this show religiously in the 80's. The characters felt like friends to me. When my friends and I would pretend-play scenes from this I had to be Little John because I was tallest, but it was Nasir that I wanted to be. His quiet manner and calm confidence in combat and his polite manners in the company of friends won my respect and admiration. Now i portray a pirate at Renaissance faires and love it, but I took a day this past weekend to be Nasir, the Saracen and people loved it.
Did Robin Hood Prince of Thieves rip off the Idea of having a Sword wielding Saracen from this series? I must admit I did learn thanks to this series about Hearn the Hunter and the Swords of Weyland was taking a college course on Middle ages folklore It would seem that weyland like St Dunstan were real swordsmiths
James00359, absolutely correct, they did plagarise the saracen from Robin of Sherwood. This series was absolutely a work of art when it came to all the mythology dealt with in it and was a far superior adaptation than the Robin Hood series claptrap which has been on BBC1.
this series would have sucked without mark ryan. Not only for the character nasir but for the amazing swordplay. Cant believe hes the voice of bumblebee in transformers.

You're entitled to your opinion, but it's completely wrong! How can you write off all the talented actors here? Nasir was an innovation but let's not get silly! He wasn't in the original ballads for 900 yrs. It was a perfectly good story then. Apart from fighting, he really didn't do much in the series. He had the easiest time of it. A page of lines through the entire show!
Mark got the part through some luck. Not to decry Nasir, he kicked ass, but the series *would* work without him.
youre right i was a bit hasty. Judi trott was a beautiful maid marian, ray winstone was like an 80s danny dyer. superb headbanger. Just that the swordfights and archery really made this series and they ere choreographed by bumblebee.
he is and has been one of the most beloved characters of the children.
it is unfair to depreciate his part for the simple reason, that his role didn't give him to many opportunities to speak a strong line! my belief is that his physical presence was essential for the success of the show.
it would have worked somehow without him, but again he was an important piece of a jigsaw for that success, like any other character.
mark knew how to make fighting look awesome& thrilling with a good counterpart. this one and the fights with valentine pelka remain legendary masterpieces.
doesn't matter that i grew up in the meantime - he'll always stay my greatest hero! <3
Oh dear god hes sexy..the dark eyes, the black leather, the skills...*wipes drool from chin* Sexiest Saracen ever lol

He had a good coach. Terry Walsh. Mark only knows what he knows from learning from masters like Walsh & Dent.
God, are you guys his Fan Club or something? The cheese is unbelievable. He shouldn't drop the soap with you guys around.

BLOL... yeah, terry walsh and steven dent shouldn't be left unmentioned in that case, u are right!

Good god. Check that perscription! Have you seen him? He's a whale with no hair.
We all lose our looks but for heaven's sake, remove the blinkers. He's not all that.

Of course, then you have Michael at about :30, drawing his weapon and looking like: "In Defense of Holy England!" LOL

Where in the word can I get a wallpaper of Nasir at :05, just standing there looking badass, just before he draws his weapons?? I must have it!

Yeah. I want him.

I love the lack of music in this battle. Adds that touch of realism woefully lacking elsewhere
tkhushrenada 4 years ago 7
Actually, I'd prefer it with music. It would look much more heroic with good fighting music.
