you know your coach is kind of right, if you get used to holding you're racquet near the end you get a little more reach for starters, but after you get the hang of the feel, you can develop a more comfortable and consistent topspin forehand and it gives more room for your left hand to fit on the grip for the backhand

firm grip only matters for blockinf in some cases and the crotch of your and needs to be lined up with the racket thats for beginners. and first of all they are called forehands , backhands, slices(sometimes drop shots), and overheads
