i totally understand the statement about men singing higher than women (in an octave lower of course)...... i found this very helpful. overall, great video!
Aha! - so we are talking about the man singing a higher note, but in the octave lower!
As a musician I know what you mean here (although it is technically still nonsense!), but the fact that this is not made clear anywhere in the video could be very confusing, not to mention frustrating for many people.
So, "men sing higher than women"? This is totally inaccurate. Before the male voice breaks in early teens there's little difference between a boy's and a girl's range. When the male voice does break it actually becomes LOWER, meaning that a man's voice, with it's larger 'chords' can no longer reach the higher notes, but can sing lower. This is why the Bass voice is male, and the Soprano voice is is female. If men could sing higher than women it would be the other way around!
@geespar1 Let me explain the statement "men sing higher than women". This is made in relation to men's natural vocal range vs womens which albeit yes an octave lower, is actually a few tones above what is comfortable for a woman to sing.
So in worship, songs that are, for instance, in Bb are normally more comfortable for women to sing than songs in D. Take a song like Delirious' Majesty. The top notes are fine for Martin Smith et al to sing but most women will struggle to comfortably reach them
@musicademy Really? That's one impressive vocalist. I'm a guitarist myself, but if I were a vocalist I'd probably see him as I see some of the guitar-greats right now (Clapton, Gilmour, Knopfler etc).
I actually first heard him sing in Pack Up by Eliza Doolittle, and in that song his talent is obvious, but it's proven difficult to find more of his work.
@gessie Yes. He's a great singer. Used to sing with his brothers in the band The Wades. Got quite a long way on XFactor or one of those other TV talent shows a couple of years back.
@musicademy Thanks, The Wades as a group is much easier to find.
I have seen some of your guitar video samples on Youtube, and I like them, but I still have plenty of other stuff I'd like to plow through first. I'm bookmarking your channel, though, for later. I like how refined the lessons are.
his was really cool i am a christian and i have been asked to do this singing thing at my church but i am kinda scared but they gave really good tips good job guys God bless
Its taken from a blessing from the Northumbria Community (based at Nether Springs near Berwick) but the music Kate made up on the spot as we were filming (we were teaching spontaneous singing). You would probably be able to learn it from the DVDs themselves. Its fairly simple.
I had a question in my mind that has beeen troubling me for a while now. When I sind, my throat gets dry easily so I've to wet it wile singing and that delays me. Thanks to you guys, now I know it could be because of the coffee i started drinking. And i've also learnt a thing or two about singing in harmony.
I really like that Tim Hughes quote. Many worship teams in my area have the mindset of "It's all for God, so the music does not have to be great, because God looks at our hearts." which God does look at our hearts, but if our hearts are set on uplifting His name we would all be making the most beautiful music we can and play and sing with excellent skill. "Sing to Him a new song; Play skillfully with a shout of joy." Psalm 33:3

I guess that's the beauty of the internet and DVD trainign - you can do it all at home. All the best. We won't be posting more in terms of vocals instruction as this sampler is just a trailer for our DVD series which you can buy. You tube is a good way of getting the message out without insisting people have to buy first
Wow nice video i learned alot of this video, continue your singing teaching. The people on youtube seem to be really enjoying your activity. Thanks for the extra help of us new singers on youtube
hey. i'm thirteen, and i prefer singing low, i can reach reasnably high, but when i do go high, i have to go falseto, and if i try to sing it out my voice cracks, i would really like some help. any comments?
i have a problem hitting high notes, i squeak do you know how to fix that. i sing in a country style and i dont really have a high voice should i even try to hit those high notes at all?
Hi Im 15 and I've been trying to "teach myself" how to sing and ive came along way in the last year but ive came where i can follow a voice and sing with them but when i sing solo my voice is weak and i cant hit many notes is there anything i can do to break away from being dependent on another's voice? any advice would be very much appreciated
ps your video was lovely and I really enjoyed the fact that you used worship songs and that you have faith also guy on keyboard is hot :D
I have a small question by the way, apart from caffeine, what drinks should also be avoided? Drinking water is good, but how about cola or tea? I'd love to hear about this in a (private) comment please. :)
Hi cola and tea both have caffeine in them so we'd say avoid them just before and during singing. I use warm decaffeinated black tea - you should also avoid dairy as it can clog your voice a little. Also avoid very cold drinks as they will cool down your nicely warmed up muscles!
Thanks for your quesstions. Sorry its taken me some time to come back to you. It sounds like you just have a very deep voice - that's fine and deep bass voices can sing beautifully too. Just make sure that you are breathing properly - you can learn to do that with our DVDs, with a teacher or some other resource. Your range will be lower than average but that's fine - just work on range development exercises to increase it if you want.
i have been singing since i 2 yrs old. but lately i feel that i have been loosing my voice.. that im not a good singer anymore. my mam is in th band th commitments and she is a singer and she tells me im not,but i think she is just being nice! theres nothing that means more to me than singing! and so i was wondering if theres anything you can suggest to me to build on my vocal chords n range! pls help!!
It sounds like your technique might be a bit faulty if you have been loosing your voice. You need to learn to breathe properly to avoid damaging your voice. Our DVDs will help explain this or a vocal teacher could as well. If you want help developing your range we have lots of exercises you can use on our DVDs and also on our vocal warm up and work out CDs - just take a look on our website for more info.
Hi all! I am a Doctor of the Voice, and in my career i get very tired of seeing un-experienced "vocal coaches" teaching. You, on the other hand.. i want to say are doing a GREAT job!! Your voice is beautiful, not to mention all on the video. Beautiful. Your technique is perfect, and your teaching application is very accurate, and GREAT to see! well done guys! your sound GREAT!
I think what you are referring to is finding a comfortable "Range" for your voice. You can develop your range by doing vocals exercises - we've a couple of CDs on our website that help with that. Often songs written by men are a bit higher than is comfortable for a woman's voice. Anything over top E is going to feel quite high I think
