I studied Hapkido years ago in Korea, and it was taught with Gyuk Tu Ki at the same time. Gyuk Tu Ki is a hybrid MA, which concentrates on the striking/blocking part of Hapkido, which we call 'Shoot-fighting'. Hapkido's core revolves around the 'Ki', 'circular motions' and 'pressure points' with 'arm locks', while the striking and defending is biased from the 'Kwan jang Nim' (owner) or 'Sa bu Nim' (head teacher)'s background. Basically, to compete with other DaekwonDo schools in Korea...
...they adopt other MA's striking/blocking techniques to market it to prospective students. Hapkido is hardcore, but since it's a hybrid MA, all schools are different.. Sorry to be so nerdy in detail to respond to your question.
If you want a true authority to give his opinion on what Martial Art is probably the best, Watch Game of Death by Bruce Lee! The second to the top of the building was Ji Han Jae. A Hapkido Master right before the top which was Kareem abdul Jabar who represented Jeet Kune Do! Even Bruce Lee in his own way was telling the viewers that Hapkido is the best structure Martial Art in the movie.
to be honest ive studied TKD and Hapkido and for real fighting hapkido is always the better martial art to study the purpose of it is to completely dismantle your opponent as to TKD which now just focuses on sparring olympic style its a shame!
the philosphy of kicking is different between hapkido and the pathetic TKD, TKD's kicking depend on speed n the element of suprise in other word TKD kicks from the knee n , but hapkido and muay thai depend on power kicks in other words they kick from the hip! i know that because i practice hapkido n if u dont believe me search (Hapkido) on wikipedia
I don't know what style of taekwondo you study, but my Master threatens to pinch our nuts if we don't bring our hips over properly on our kicks ;).
P.S. I train in Hapkido also, and don't get any delusions, there are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists (paraphrased from bruce lee)
Qyama, I am sorry but your comment is incorrect! I am a 5th Dan in TKD and I am a 6th Dan in Hapkido! I can tell you that if your feet is developed and it as hard as a rock, your speed will be powerful enough! But if you think that kicking with your hips is the ONLY way to effectively strike, your going to be stuck wondering why the TKD guy keeps making you taste his nasty feet! Everything has its advantages and disadvantages! You shouldn't say negative things about any MA!
Tae Kwon Do is already included entirely in hapkido, why would any sane person combine these martial arts when he can combine 2 different styles 2 gain the advantage like say HKD + BJJ = THE PERFECT MARTIAL ART , NO OFFIENCE BUT THAT IS JUST STUPIED
wow, nice kicks... some ppl say that hapkido kicks are same then TKD, but look at the position of the arms and the legs... They are very different, I say it coz I train hapkido, and i see some TKd kicks too... but HKD got few more kicks then TKD.
More kicks then TKD? That's virtually impossible. lol The (martial) foundations are the same for both hapkido and taekwondo. HKD and TKD have different "ways" and use a different set of kicks. The set of kicks more adequate to its "way". That's just it.
With 25 basic kicks, 4 special kicks, and at least 5 different ways of doing each kick... yeah, Hapkido has more. WTF TKD has what... front snap, front pushs, side, back, axe, spin hook, and about 3 ways to do each (regular, jump, or switch-jump)?
There are only so many ways to raise your leg and move it quickly at a human sized target. Even so, there are some pretty subtle differences in there.
Think about how kickass you could be by mixing hapkido, boxing and judo/bjj!

@ImIwilliamImI
...if you know anything about hapkido, you'd know that would be unnecessary, as it covers hand strikes, and a LOT of grappling and groundwork.
It's parent art is Daito-ryu Jujitsu, mixed with the kicking arts of korea.
Heck, you learn how to use a sword in hapkido, rope, cane, staff. It's The original MMA imho.
...but I've heard it called a "hybrid" art.
