There was obstruction, the direct result of which was to impede an important scoring opportunity.

As much as I hate the Italians, as they are a bunch of Drama-queens like their English counterparts... This was indeed a penalty. It had stopped the guy's momentum by running in the line that he was. From initial thoughts in the past from this incident... I thought that Neill had touched the ball, and then Grosso had dived. Then that wouldn't have been a penalty. I'm surprised that even the Aussie Soccer Federation gave Neill the captaincy after this '06 WC!!

So I just watched the whole game again. Its not so much the penalty but the fact that Australia had over 40 minutes to score a goal with a man up on Italy and couldn't. You should blame yourselves and Neil should be smarter than to slide at a player like that in the box. Just goes to show you that Australia is still young in this game. Better luck next time!

I'm Italian and living in Australia and i say that the Italian's were always going to beat the shitralia in this match in extra time and plus it was the REFEREE'S decision to call the penalty NOT ITALY YOU IDIOTS. The ref had played the advantage, hence why the penalty was called. Finally, years after, I see it. Too bad that it doesn't change my opinion about how the Italian national team played throughout that match and the tournament.
