He probably thinks there's a pack of his buddies around. I think the whole howling thing is little more than a frequency range tickling a corner of his brain and he just feels like howling back. It's probably just a "pack mentality" device kinda like howling coyotes on one hill causing a pack to start howling on a distant hill.

I love the sound of big hound dogs baying at the moon or just communicating with each other. I'd join 'em if I could--as silly as that sounds.

I have to wonder about all these "You're hurting his ears" comments.

If his ears were hurting he'd probably just get up and leave and find some place away from the siren or howl or whatever.

Isn't it more realistic to conclude something else? I mean when a dog howls at the moon does that mean the moon is hurting his ears?

@SuperDachshund Agreed. My dachshund does this when someone leaves the house and there are no sounds. Then he just misses us. I don't think anything's hurting their ears.
