Over my years of listening to guitar players, I've classified it all into two categories: PURE Playing and FLASH playing. Sure, Van Halen, Malmsteen, Batten, etc. can tap and slide 100 notes in four bars---but after a while, it just all sounds the same to me. Tom's opening riff, to my ears, is pure playing. Much like John Fogerty's Fortunate Son. Real and satisfying, these riffs just become American Standards. Thank you for this awesome post!
