  • Amidst all the Wall Street bad guys and corrupt members of Congress exposed in "Capitalism: A Love Story," I pose a simple question in the movie: "Is capitalism a sin?" I go on to ask, "Would Jesus be a capitalist?" Would he belong to a hedge fund? Would he sell short? Would he approve of a system that has allowed the richest 1% to have more financial wealth than the 95% under them combined?

  • i find my proverbial pessimist to be very sexy!!!

    :P

  • The US will continue to meddle in Russias sphere of influence including the Ukraine, Georgia, and central Europe. This back track from the missile shield in Poland & The Czech Rep is only an appeasement towards Russia so that they will tow the line and vote against the UN Inspectors recommendations that Israel be sent to the Hague to face War Crimes charges. The 5 permanent members of the Security Council are to vote on this very issue in the coming week. How do you think Russia will vote now?

  • Israel is calling for war on Iran and since Iran borders Russia, any fallout from a destroyed nuclear reactor would have devastating consequences on the entire region. Would Russia stand down if Israel attacks? Would Russia use their own missile shield to stop Israel?

Obama is talking about a joint US, Russia, NATO missile shield. So, who will control this new combined defense shield that is being proposed?

I don't think this one is over just yet.

  • I was glad to hear that the missle defense program was scrapped and I must admit rather surprised too.

  • Of course there's one government. What did you think? There should be two governments? Even if there were 150 parties there would still be one government.

    There are two parties, too.

Both can be true: one government, and two parties. Note: This doesn't mean the two parties aren't very similar in many important respects; they are.

  • Thanks Ella. I suspect, rather pessimistically, that Obama may go back on this issue of propose something else as compromise.

  • Both of these were very positive developments. The missile "defense" shield (a nice Orwellian description for what were clearly 1st strike weapons) had purchased us nothing but grief from everyone but our most blind allies (this means YOU, Polish govt.)

And is that a mention of...omg...FAIRNESS?! Just think how dangerous the concept of fairness could be if it worked its way into our justice system. Only the first to fall? Let's hope.

  • I was relieved to hear that news as well. It felt like the cuban missile crisis all over again.

Yes, one of the missing things from the financial crisis has been "Justice". This is good as was the Madoff conviction. Hopefully much more to come.

  • "...cost billions and billions of dollars..." And the fiscal conservative right side of the damaged government brain never says a thing about it. Not to mention that it doesn't follow their creed of less government. LOL

  • Bush made a huge mistake in trying to push Russia's hand with that defense system in Poland. It was all about the oil and natural gas pipelines from Russia to Eastern Europe, not about any defense of Israel or any other country. It wasn't too long after that happened that Russia and China met with Iran. You figure what that means to the US.

  • You are the only one of those who constanntly deride Obama that at least gives him credit on a few issues. While I think he is a million times better than Bush and think he has been unfairly treated by the media and so-called "revolutionaries"it is good to see someone admit when he does something good. I never thought I would see people fight universal healthcare..then again,I see working people support republiCUNTS everyday so nothing really surprises me. I thought

    Clinton faced a witch hunt.

  • end the FED !

  • And if I have heard it right, the F-22 raptor program has been shelved. A fabulous war bird to be sure, but insanely expensive and could be made obsolete by utilization of asymmetric tactics.

Face it, we spend damn near as much on military as the rest of the world combined....are we insane or just plain old nasty?

  • haha! Turns out Israel might be the main benefactor from the decision regarding this missile defense shield in Europe. Just got that on Aljazeera.

  • First thing I'm about 300% on board with the President on...

But keep it up... Bring the 500,000 troops home in 800 bases in 130 nations...

I'm sick of trillions spent in foreign lands "protecting" interests that are not in need of protecting.

  • I love ella's foreign policy desk. I would rather hear what your you opinion of what is going on than the opinion of the daily KOS.

  • who needs (Land based) Missle Defense Program when you have SPACE COMMAND... command of all space, with laser-tipped Satellites.. Defense Industry will have their way, one way or another....

The scraping of land-based system is just a window-dressing.

  • israel just had secret metting with russia does it look like russia is giving Israel green light to boom iran?

  • Let us bomb Iran and we wont put up the sheild's! think abount it

  • why did a few foreign journalists say they are just moving it to surround Iran though?

  • Excellent, well-researched vid as always!

  • Missile defense: Trillions of dollars I think..."Bankrupt America"...thanks for some good news Ella.

  • Great video, Ella.

One more piece of good news for the domestic desk, today: The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA) in moving forward in Congress. From The Washington Monthly: "The student-loan industry is getting government subsidies to provide a service the government can perform for less. The Obama administration has asked Congress to remove the middleman [banks], streamline the process, save taxpayers a lot money, and help more young people get college degrees."

  • >> "You really do wonder why nobody came up with this idea before. Well, in fairness, the Clinton White House came up with the same idea, but Republicans and industry lobbyists went berserk and the plan had to be scaled back.

"They're throwing another fit this year, but for now, the bill seems to be on track. ... The same folks who demand cost savings, improved efficiency, and streamlined government programs, are nevertheless opposed to a common-sense idea that achieves those very goals."

  • a judge who ruled against the cheaters. imagine that :)

  • the us -policeman of the world, an beyond
